I'm picking up a gaming pc shortly and was wondering what single player shooters you recommend. I generally prefer tactical military games, e.g., Rainbow Six, Ghost Recon, etc., but am open to anything as long as it's fun.

Which ones are fun and have decent single player modes?

Thanks.

The ones you mentioned and a little bit more futuristic, any of the Crysis games.

Like Tinker said Crysis all the way. The open sandbox lush environments is what sets pc fps apart from the consoles. Its nice cause u can go all out guns blazing or stealth your way through the game. Computer graphic cards have finally caught up to the game. So now you will be able to enjoy the game with all the bells and whistles.

Try Metro 2033 as well. You can make good use of strategy and stealth tactics in that game, and the atmosphere is incredible. Like Crysis, it is meant to be played on a good PC.

If you enjoy extremely intense shoot outs with a good variety of weapons and enemies, Serious Sam 3 is my recommendation. It's the best solo FPS title I've played in years.

+1. Got it during the Steam Christmas Sale and I'm really having a blast playing it.

I concur with the others. All 3 Crysis games are the bees knees.

Modern Combat 1 has a decent campaign, Modern 2 has a good campaign and also very re playable "Special Ops" missions, and MW3 is ok with some of the same options as Modern Warfare 2. By this point you'll be burned out on Modern Warfare games but at least on the PC you can crank up the options and get the best possible picture out of the aging engine.

There are lots of shooters worth playing on the PC, and not all of them brand new....and many of them a few years old now can be found on the cheap, particularly once they are available for direct download.

OH DUH...and of course if you want the ultimate in hard, tactical shooters.....look at the ARMA games. They are the most realistic shooters out there, and I mean that in the cruelest sense.....I used to play quite a bit of the Operation Flashpoint games, which is the original version of these modern ARMA games, and they require you to adapt to a completely new style of game play. Many a night I spent hours getting through a mission by creeping along, listening for bad guys, hoping a patrol didn't stumble onto me or slaughter my team and leave me alone.....a great game, but one that will erquire you to dramatically change the way you think about shooters
