My GeForce GTX 480 is connected to my Onkyo TX-NR809 through HDMI and am using it for both audio and video.

When ever I play movies or games the receiver decodes it as 7.1 Multichannel (which is what I want it to do) but when I'm not doing that and just navigating through windows operating system it will revert to Dolby Digital.

When I open a browser with any audio or video content (banner ads, embedded videos) the receiver changes to multichannel again. Not sure if this is damaging to the receiver but is there any way to keep it at one setting and not having to switch between different surround sound decodings just because I'm browsing or playing music?
