Hi people.

I plan to build my first gaming PC soon and am a little stumped on how I would go about something. Although I do play the newer games of today, I also still play older games as well. Such as back in the PS2, and PS1 era. Those games on PC I believe, use a different older operating system. If I want to be assured that I can play those older games ok without problems, what would I need to do? Should I install an older OS first, then move on up the windows 8?

Install just Windows 8. When you find a game that doesn't "just work", head over to the Steam forums and find one of the first posts in the list that tells you how to run this Windows 95 game in Windows 7/8. Don't mess around with old OS.

Ok, but are you sure every game is featured on Steam? What if one isn't, what then?

There isn't really an OS, old or new, that runs all the old games. The switch from DOS to Windows broke many games, and Win95 to XP broke others. If you were a PC gamer back in the day, you probably remember running memory managers and command lines to get hardware to work. What a mess! Modern PC gaming, which still has occasional issues, is so much better now.

I'm not sure if you are thinking of a specific old game or not, but head to Good Old Gaming for your favorite older title and check the compatibility. Chances are it will run on Win 7/8, some use DOSbox, and others might need to be run as Administrator.

I was told by a friend that possibly installing multiple OS starting from old all the way up to new could assure me that older windows games will work fine, true?

Way too complicated. Someone on the Internet has already figured out how to get every game you want to play running on modern Windows. "Game name windows 7" will become your favorite google term if you do play a lot of old games.

Another way to state this is that if you are asking the question "multiple OS?", then multiple OS is not for you. If you were a multiple OS kind of user, then you would already know the answer to the question without having to ask.

A) Irrelevant to the discussion.

B) You have no accurate source that proves that he ever actually said that. The likelihood that he ever would have is also extremely low.

Troll post is trolling.

I wanted to quote that somewhere else around avs recently. I had to google the exact quote because I couldn't remember the number. Come to find out it's a bogus quote made up by some journalist. Either that or Bill was very successful in wiping the source off the the internet.

I can't remember where I even heard it.

I'm glad that there are some people around here that are interested in truth and research, rather than just trolling for the sake of trolling. smile.gif
