So, in light of THQ's bankruptcy, a bunch of properties were auctioned off and Gearbox grabbed the Homeworld franchise and plans to release the games and pursue a re-launch of the franchise. For those of you who don't know what Homeworld is, it's one of the most highly-regarded if not the most highly-regarded space RTS game series so far. It was a staple of the Windows 3D Gaming era back when PC games came in cardboard boxes and digital downloads were one of those things that sounded awesome but just wasn't possible. Anyway, you can expect Homeworld and Homeworld 2 to hit Steam sometime in the future. No word on the Homeworld: Cataclysm expansion that was done by a third-party company but that one might be part of the deal. Anyone else super-excited?

The Homeworld series were great strategy games, no doubt about it. I think another hidden gem was Galactic Civilizations, although it's turn based and nowhere near as frantic as Homeworld.

Yep, I love Gearbox, and I loved Homeworld, I'm hoping they don't mess this up.

Duke was nearly finished when they got ahold of it, all they did was finish the last bit and release it. Aliens was outsourced to a diff company and only the multiplayer was made by GB. That being said, I hope they don't outsource it and focus on it in house.

Duke took 150 people 18 months to finish. That is not "nearly finished". That is six months short of a full dev cycle. The result is what you get from Gearbox' non-Borderlands "B" team.

Aliens was endlessly mismanaged for six years. The responsibility for that mismanagement and the exceptionally poor quality of the released game rests 100% on Gearbox' shoulders. The game was outsourced because after five years their own internal output was of even worse quality than what they ended up releasing. Again, the result of the non-Borderlands "B" team.

When making Borderlands, Gearbox fires on all cylinders and does fantastic work. Expecting them to do even remotely passable quality work on any other property is simply a masochistic act of hoping for failure so that you can be disappointed. Their track record speaks for itself, regardless of how you try to rationalize it by repeating what PR has somehow convinced you of.

The Borderlands team is not going to make Homeworld. They're busy making Borderlands DLC/3/cash-money. That great "B" team is pretty free though!

Gearbox announced that they are updating Homeworld 1/2 to use current graphics tech with new models ala Halo: Anniversary Edition and they will release the original games on Steam to go with their updated versions. Still no word on Homeworld: Cataclysm, the game that takes place between 1 and 2.

The team behind the original game has been given the rights to do a Homeworld sequel. They were working on a game called "Hardware: Shipbreaker" and it has been re-titled "Homeworld: Shipbreaker" after they connected with Gearbox to assist in the rebuilding of the original two Homeworld games. I don't know what the storyline is in relation to the first two games, but the game seems to be a planet-based version of Homeworld that involves salvaging wrecks while fighting off pirates. From the footage, the game very much feels like "Homeworld on a planet" with many of the same design elements and gameplay methods.

Here's a wee bit of an update. Gearbox has been keeping things on the down-low but they have recently stated that they are using the highest of the high-end hardware to revamp Homeworld 1 and 2 as 4K games. Yes, that's right. 4K. As in UHD. They've gone back to the original talent from the development team and gotten them to help upgrade everything on the A/V side of things so that it looks and feels like Homeworld but with today's graphics tech. I have no idea if they will expand the game to fill out the unused plot points that were left out of the original games due to time and budget, but they might. Still no word on Homeworld: Cataclysm or if they even have the assets to it.
