Got some cash to burn...here's my system now:

i5-3450 (non-K, OCed 4 turbo bins though)

GTX 770 (main GPU)

GTX 750 (mining/physX)

8GB DDR3-1600

128GB Samsung 840 EVO SSD

256GB Samsung 840 SSD

64GB OCZ Vertex 3 + 2TB WD Green (Intel Smart Response Hybrid)

So I'm not particularly lacking in anything, and I'm waiting on the GTX 800 series to get a new GPU.  That's happening no matter what.

Beyond that, I'm thinking of swapping the 3450 for a 3470K so I can properly OC it....but I'm wondering how realistic 4.4ghz or so is on air.  But I cant think of any games that are struggling with the 3450 either. Stepping up to haswell requires a mobo swap, so that's off the table. And if you're OCing as far as I've heard, the reduced headroom on haswell pretty much eats away at any IPC gains anyway.

Another option is throwing another 8-16GB of ram in there, but I cant think of any good use for it beyond a ram disk to shave another few seconds off load times.

Or maybe popping another 120GB 840 EVO in there and running them in RAID 0...because why not?

I'm open to other suggestions on how to burn $200 or so.  :P

New display??? Your system is solid, I don't see any wisdom in throwing money in it.

Get another 8GB for gaming? 8GB really isn't much these days.

I've been eyeballing the EVO's prices for a while. I have wanted to upgrade to a larger SSD for a while. I'm now running a 128 with win7 and another with win8. Been looking at a minimum of a 500g ssd update. They have recently been the lowest they've ever been.

When I get my tax check it's probably going to a new guitar.

In your case though, I would say more ram. Looks like the only area that's a little skinny.

I recently bought a noctua (courtesy of those handy coupons newegg sends after you bought something before)low profile cooler to replace mine, so I could change cases to a HTPC case. I go through the whole process of taking everything out, detached the cooler, used the cleaner to get the grease off. Find out the last cooler has a damn adhesive attaching the backplate, that I completely forgot about. I had to go search for instructions to find out why I couldn't pull this damn plate off. So, I'm not using that cooler until I upgrade to a new MB/CPU.

Who said anything about wisdom? I'm deliberately aiming for overkill. tongue.gif

I think I can justify both the RAM and the RAID SSD on the basis that it'll dramatically speed up transfers to the RAM drive so I can not use the RAID SSDs. smile.gif

I'd say it depends on what kinds of games you play. I didn't think 16GB was needed, but BF4 has a memory leak issue that affects some players, and when I switched from 8GB to 16GB, it completely eliminated all of my stuttering (which could be pretty awful at times). The alternative was to use something like RAMMap to keep things under control, but my laziness won out. tongue.gif

And if you do play games like BF4 online (you don't need much for single player) or Crysis 3, you'd see a significant performance increase using HT. And it'd be smoother as well. Of course then you'd need a CPU above that $200 limit. O_o

Well I would resell my 3470 so the upgrade would be around $100ish....hmmm.

Well, like I said...it depends on what you play. But then again, like you said, you're going for overkill. tongue.gif

The vast majority of games today are quite happy with 8GB and a 3450. But who knows what the future holds. Of course, we've been saying that for a while...lol. We do see games like Watch Dogs pushing those minimum requirements higher though.

Depends sort of on what games you play the most often.

I'd buy a new videocard but you're waiting for the 800's to come out. Honestly anything else will just be money spent but no appreciable upgrade in fps, load times, etc. I don't want to say it's a "waste" cuz I'm all for overkill but only when there is a reason for it. If you're not going to benefit from a $100 or more here or there then I would be compelled to convince you to save your dough for something else. wink.gif

I ended up settling on the ram for now, because it's feeling like SSD and CPU refresh season is just starting to kick off.  I guess we'll see what 24GB of ram is really good for. :)

Stupid newegg finally gets the video card I have back in stock, right after I buy this guitar. Now I can't get this, it would have been one or the other. Out of stock for like 4 months on that video card.

I just put the order in for the guitar earlier today, and just now got the email about the video card.

Now that you have plenty of RAM, disable the page file.

I suppose I could, but what's the harm in keeping it?  It's not like I'm actually going to hit it.

Also, I figured out a way to pre-load entire games into RAM without dealing with RAM disks....it's absolutely disgusting how fast stuff loads now!

Possibly to eliminate unnecessary read/writes on the SSD or HDD system.

Either way I want to know more about that second part. smile.gif

It's just a little applet I put in my send to menu, so I just right click a folder, pick "precache" and it just reads the entire folder into the windows cache.
