Is there any reason to think that a projector will not look as good as a monitor?

It all depends on the display you would compare it to. But generally no, if you have the requirements for a good projector setup, it will look just as good.

Ok, thanks. I really want to game on a 4K projector with a 4K gaming projector. I'm just waiting for a HDMI 2.0 card to come out. I do wonder if there was a Display Port adapter to an HDMI 2.0 projector, would that function the same.

Unless you've got gobs of cash to play with, you will need to wait a while before 4k projectors come down in price. As it stands, the least expensive one you can get as far as I know is the sony:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-SONY-VPL-VW500ES-4K-3D-1080P-HD-Home-Theater-Projector-/221377577387?pt=US_Video_Projectors&hash=item338b21c1ab

You will also want to wait for a projector that's hdmi 2.0 compatible as well...and a receiver.

If you can't wait, there are tons of 1080p projectors that are really economical and quite good.

The less expensive projectors won't have anywhere near the contrast or black levels of even a decent monitor, but gaming on a massive screen in surround sound is absolutely breathtaking. I'm playing Need for Speed Rivals on a 138 inch 21:9 screen with a custom resolution of 1920x816. So awesome.

I'm aware of 4K projectors. I have a nice HT setup and will be purchasing one either this fall or next fall. Really want to build my 4K gaming PC first, what have to wait on the right equipment to be released.

HDMI 2.0 connections are really what you need to wait on. You don't want to be stuck at 30hz.

Personally I prefer a monitor for FPS gaming. I have a 39in 4k Seiki that I run at 1920X1080@120hz for gaming and 2560x1440@72hz for desktop use. I had a Benq W7000 PJ and it was not to bad for response time, but compared to true 120hz it is junk. The insanely smooth game play you get is a must, at least for me. I have had several monitors and nothing has come close to the Sieki, once calibrated and as far as I know it is the only true 120hz monitor over 27in.

I just built a new media room with a 134" screen and an Epson 5030 and I still use my 65" plasma for gaming. The main reason for me is the projector screen doesn't have the same pop as a TV or monitor. I can display the same image on the TV as the Projector and there is a huge difference in my eyes. I like the pop over the larger screen. For movies it's not an issue and I prefer the projector but for games, to me, there is a huge difference.

Are you sure it isn't a case of your bulb being older and not as bright as it used to be ? (in your projector). Reason I say that, is that lately I've been preferring to use my 50 inch plasma in the living room, or my 24 inch monitor in my office room, rather than my projector. Of course, a huge part of the reason why I'm doing this is because I have an older bulb in my projector now, and it just doesn't have that same "pop" to it right now, but I think a lot of it is the older bulb. Part of my issue is that I still have a 720p projector, and my other displays are 1080p, so the resolution is a huge part of it too.

I'm assuming the Epson 5030 is 1080p, so in your situation it isn't the resolution, but maybe it's the bulb ?

Projectors looks awesome, they are just so laggy . Both of my projectors look fantastic hooked up to my PC, games look amazing, it is all a matter of Lag. If there was a Projector with 2ms response time I might use that over a monitor.

Optoma makes the GameTime projectors that doesn't have much lag, but they are 720p projectors. Maybe they made a 1080p model, but I don't know.

I really prefer to game on the big screen. Me and my friends love to play NBA 2K, Madden, and COD on the big screen. I couple of years ago, we would have BBQ at night and put up my 225in Open Cinema screen on my Optoma GT720. Really fun. I enjoyed playing uncharted in 3D on my 120in HP screen. That's why either this winter or next, I would have a 4K projector and I really want to get a 4K gaming pc.

The optoma 1080p 3D projector I use (HD131xe) has input lag as good as any panel (16ms).

NBA 2K14 really shines on huge screens. No question about it. Playing the PS4 version on a 126" screen is pretty amazing, and that's even on a older 720p projector. Fifa is another game that is so much better on a HUGE screen. In fact, I think Fifa might benefit more than just about any game I can think of.

Well 16ms is great for a Projector, there are 1ms gaming monitors, which is a big difference when playing FPS games. But for any other games 16ms is totally fine, be fun to play NBA on that Optoma or racing games.

There aren't any 1ms HDTVs though. Maybe you're at a disadvantage playing on a HDTV or PJ in a competitive counterstrike tournament, but you wouldn't be sitting on a couch for that anyway.

I use frame interpolation on my projector and it looks fantastic and is very smooth. Sure it's not the same as 120hz, but it emulates it pretty well, IMHO.

I'm using an Optoma HD3300 with an anamorphic lens and playing games in super wide mode is something I wouldn't trade for any monitor.

Not all projectors lag! DLP projectors, the 120Hz models made for PC use, have 0-10ms input lag.

You know when people talk about lag, are these guys really into Call of Duty or Rock Band or fighting games ? Because I've never had any problems with lag in your normal type game. Of course, the hardcore set, when they play Street Fighter 4 or Rock Band or Black Ops or whatever, they can notice tiny amounts of lag that really hurts their experience. Maybe it's just something I've never really noticed, but I don't really play fighting games or music rhythm games, and I'm not really into FPS shooters either, so maybe it's just the games that I play don't normally show off the lag.

( by the way, I'm just talking about the various projectors that I've owned, I have noticed some lag on various plasmas and stuff that I've owned before, although it wasn't really a deal breaker type thing )

You make a good point, I am very picky and sensitive to lag when playing FPS. I am sure most people would not worry like me. So it is really a personal thing for me.

You don't notice lag, you measure it. If you can see it then it is really really bad! Reaction time is usually much worse than input lag but why add to the total amount lag time by buying a slow display. Like drag racing, you need to have a good reaction but if the other guy sees the light turn green before you do then you're already at a disadvantge.

I just can't bring myself to use a 720p PJ nowadays.

I just saw this thread and I have a question. I am doing a project to make a home theater on my basement. I have a good LED 55 inches that I love for gaming. However, it is not big enough for movies.

My idea is to use the TV for gaming and the projector for movies. Do you guys have any idea what would be the best setup in terms of where to put the screen, etc... I googled both TV and projector setups and could not find much. Any of you guys have a similar setup? Thanks

The best setup i have seen for this is a motorized screen that comes down in front of the TV. I am sure there is a thread in here somewhere dedicated to what you want, but from what I have read you could have it setup that as soon as you turn on your projector the screen goes down. Pretty cool and gives you what you want.

I would suggest the projector section. Plenty of people have the dual screen thing going. I'm planning on doing an motorized screen myself. Have the trigger from my projector initiate the screen to drop as it's powered on. It takes a few seconds before I can get an image anyway, I'm sure the screen would be down by the time an image is displayed.

Why not just use the PJ for gaming though?

I have a set-up exactly like that in my game room, HT is dedicated perm wall.

It will vary with the projector and handshaking but mine ends up only being about a 3 second difference for source on screen to screen 100% down.
