I was super excited to hear about a new UT, but this is not at all what I expected. Rather than making the game themselves, they're crowdsourcing it. There's a small team at epic that'll be organizing it, but all the actual development is expected to come from the community. And it'll be free. Not free to play with microtransactions, but straight up 100% free. Which makes sense, since they're not paying the devs. Eventually the goal is to have a storefront where people can buy/sell mods and such (I'm sure they'll want a cut.)
Interesting. My initial inclination is a strong preference for the tried-and-true method of just paying $60 for a polished and focused product done entirely by a centralized team of professionals.
Yeah, definitely. But I think they got burned so bad on UT3, which sold like absolute garbage. This is prob the only realistic way to revive it. It'll be a cool experiment though. But they've gotta walk a really fine line not to be seen taking advantage of the community.
