Looks like I can do one or the other for roughly the same price. Would I be better off with a 7900gt or 2 7600gt in SLI, both have 256mb video ram

Depends on what your resolution needs are in the short term, but I'd say 7900GT now, leaving the spare SLI slot open for a future upgrade if needed someday.

No sense buying 2 slower cards and filling up your upgrade path.

I'd also go for the 7900GT. I made the same decision back when I got my single 7800GT. Now I'm looking for a 2nd one used... aka hopefully cheap.

Though if you're going for a single card for now, I would also consider the ATI X1900XT. I've always been an nvidia guy, but the performance is sure there. It's about on par with an well-overclocked 7900GT or a stock 7900GTX. For $280ish.

Where did you find an ATI X1900 XT for $280? I see some online places as "low" as $248 but they don't get glowing reviews.....add the shipping and we're right back to $300+.

Even Ebay, if you like that sort of thing, is in the $329 and up range plus $20 an up for shipping (or should I say profit margin?).

I think I've settled on this particular card. Deciding where to buy it is the hard part!
