Does Fantastic Four (First movie) have it or not? I tested it and got no pops.

Just enjoy HD in whatever form you can (Sat, Cable, D-VHS, OTA, HD DVD, or BD).

I have the xa2 and Onkyo PR885... Eagles Farewell concert @ 23:40 has the loud "pop" when bitstreaming the DTS MA to the preamp, Amazon kindly replaced the disk when I explained the problem and lo and behold same pop same place! The simple solution would be to have the manufacturers of these problematic discs reissue them without this flaw.

Its suppose to, but the general consensus is it may have been fixed on some discs.
"The Fly" seems to be the definitive test.

I just tried it out now.

My specs:

Onkyo 805
Panasonic DMP-BD30
The Fly (Blu-ray)

connected via HDMI.

I used my headphones to test it out, and sure enough I noticed the pop during the office scene where the guy walks out.

I'm scared to use DTS-MA now with any movie for fear of damage to my speakers.

I can't risk losing my $2000 speakers to this.

What a mess...

Can anyone recommend a current Sony receiver that does DTS-MA decoding and does not have the popping issue?

I hope you call Onkyo and Panasonic. Folks need to call.

Edit: Remember its not all dts hd ma disk. The list is short and as near as I can tell we've gotten the exhaustive list posted. The other thing is that you can protect yourself in the short term by turning the dts hd ma output to PCM. No it won't be the full high def audio. It still sounds pretty good with 5.1. Not a solution I agree. But it is a safe approach until it gets ironed out.

For those disk that don't have a problem, you can always turn bitstream back on.

I'll call Onkyo tomorrow, but honestly I don't think there's anything they can do at this point.

And frankly, although the list of DTS-MA offending discs is short, new DTS-MA movies are coming every week it seems. I can't wait around for every movie I buy to be thoroughly tested for the DTS-MA pop.

I think I'll just Ebay the Onkyo 805 and use the proceeds to get a new Sony receiver or maybe a Denon.

"The Fly" seems to be the definitive test.

The Fantastic Four disc does have it.

I did discover something that I am scared to try out.

The disc I had that did it had a slightly different catalog number than the one I exchanged it with.

The one I had that had the problem is 2240101.

When I went to the store to complain I noticed on the back that the catalog number was 2240102.

I have never tried it yet as I had the bang/pop go through my speakers twice and would not like a third attempt just to test a theory.

The only thing I can think of is the 101 version was when the movie came out (first batch of discs with DTSHD MA) and I replaced it almost a year later with a 102 version.

I am curious if the people that did not have issues with this movie have the 102 catalog number or the 101 version.

If this theory works than maybe FOX has been aware of this during testing (shot in the dark) and they quietly changed the pressing of the disc.

How many Pioneers are actually having this problem? From what I can find, there is one post of a problem with a horrible noise on movies that are not even listed on the first post of this thread. Who knows what that problem is?

Did you look at the link I posted? One report that is about disks no one else is having problems with and Pioneer seems to keep getting lumped in as having the problem. I have posted on the 94 thread asking if anyone is having the problem and if anyone responds, I will report back.

The Yamaha RX-V663 has only been available on the street for a couple of weeks. I have one but its paired with a PS3. The question has been asked in the owner's thread to see if it exhibits this problem.

It seems that people that are experiencing this problem have either a BD30/Onkyo or BD30/Yamaha player and receiver combination. Are there any BD-P1400/Onkyo owners that have seem this issue? Where is the trouble movie list?

Thanks.

No problem... Whats new? I hate to put every users sound drop out when it may or may not be the same issue.

If anybody wants to recap something I may have missed, I'll be glad to cut and paste it. I did update it the other day though...

If we are keeping score, Fox produced two of the eight known to have the issue. They along with New Line and the Euro releases will account for nearly all DTS-HD MA titles.

1408 - Weinstein (Import)
Golden Compass - New Line
The Fly - Fox
Chronos - Koch Dist.
Fantastic Four - Fox
Hannibal Rising (HD DVD) - Weinstein (Import)
Close Encounters of the Third Kind - Sony/MGM
Eagles Farewell Concert (HD DVD) - Rhino

Perhaps the guys in this thread can help us do the analysis/plot the bang/pop sound as they seem to have the right software:

For the guy who did the testing and said he actually recorded it, can that be posted somewhere so the guys who havent heard what this thing sounds like can get an idea?

My dealer recorded it with a video camera and he did not send me a copy of the recording yet. I'll ask him for it but I'm guessing it won't sound nearly as "loud/authoratative" with your PC speakers and the fact that it's a recording with a video camera as it does when your watching a movie with typical volume.

Chronos is not a 20th century disc so the answer is no

Because there was hardly any players that could bitstream the sound codes and fewer receivrers that could decode the high end sound DTSHD MA, etc so when those finally hit the market and people started using those combinations of receiver and player and the right disc it all came together

Here is a MP3 track of the sound "Creme Blu-Ray" posted on blu-ray.com.

"Here's what the pop sounds like. I have a DMP-BD30K connected to an RX-V3800.

This is from The Fly. The pop happens at exactly 13:00. I set the volume all the way down to -55 dB, so I had to place the microphone next to the speaker so you can hear it in context. Even at this level, the pop is significant."

If it's not a BIG screen, it's not a theater...

Shamus we probably should REMOVE the Pioneer receiver from the list of receivers within that first post since we don't have any definitive reports of Pioneer models. We've got that one users report on page three but the description he gives is different.

This way we aren't implicating a BRAND that we aren't sure has experienced the same anomoly/issue. We have more than enough evidence of Onkyo, Integra, and Yamaha's having reported it.

Thanks.

I returned the original disk of "The Fly" to Fry's and received a replacement; Catalogue no. 2242791. I tried the new disk this afternoon but this time turned the sound way down to almost not audible. The explosion happened again at exactly the same spot in the movie and despite the sound being down very low, the "bitstream bomb" was still very loud. My daughter was over and was very surprised when it happened. I then re-set the audio to regular Dolby Digital 5.1 and the "bitstream bomb" didn't happen. I've never had anything like this on any other DTS-HD MA track before.

I have an Onkyo 805 that has been trouble free so far and a Panny BD30. I haven't tested the above mentioned problem movies, but I plan to do that asap. I already put them in my Blockbuster queue, they should be arriving shortly. Tested Ice Age with no pops...

Now, if some new version releases of the movies in question do not exhibit the popping sound, why can't we concentrate more on the DTS' share of the blame? Wouldn't the receivers pop with all DTSMA titles if the chipset was faulty? I am not trying to shift the blame and not having enough in depth knowledge about how these things work I am merely stating what makes sense to me. Any engineers out there that can shed some light on this??

I think we experienced the popping noise tonight while watching Enchanted. The 2 popping sounds came from the subwoofer during the raining scene after the hobo stole her tiara.
I played the scene over and over, and the 2 pops were still there.

My equipment are the Panny BD30, Onkyo 705, and the sub is the HSU VTF3.3.
