EaglePC - Guess who OEM's Sony's DVD burners? Lite-On - the one and only. Sony has been outsourcing production of DVD burners to Lite-On for nearly 2 years. On some models, the "upgrade firmware" is essentially the same!

I did the USB update and it seems to have improved DVD+R playback for me. Some of my backup discs that wouldn't even be recognized by the player before, play fine now. Worthy upgrade for me.

"improved playback" can mean a lot of things, not just for SD-DVDs. Though I haven't had any problems with blu-ray discs at all so far with the player so can't really say anything has improved there.

I updated the firmware. Guess what? I watched the 1st hour of Ratatouille without 1 audio dropout. This was a first for me. I was going to watch the whole thing but ran out of time. Note that before I would've had at leat a half dozen very brief dropouts in the first hour. I'll be interested to hear others' experiences with it. Looks like Sammy is making some real improvements (unless it breaks other stuff that used to work, of course).

I'm connected to my audio receiver via HDMI (Bitstream (audiophile)) and chose the uncompressed audio on the disc.

Good news. I updated mine today, but don't have any problems discs to check out. I did play Cars without issue tonight. I have Mummy Returns from Netflix to check out. After this firmware update, my 1500 must have reverted back to default settings. I had to go in the menu and choose Bitstream Audiophile, etc. I don't remember doing this for the 1.1? Anyway. so far so good.

Did you get the 1.3 firmware released this week? Also, I use the Antec laptop cooler which plugs into the usb(and has a passthru jack so you can still use the usb jack). Works well. I still feel I gave this unit an unneccessary "crutch", but I like it otherwise.

Yeah I updated it all before I threw a movie in, well besides Digital Video Essentials. But its not fun thinking that something MIGHT go wrong. I warned the wife and she was cool with it, but all in all no problems and so far so good! If cooling is the only issue I have this thing is great. Sounds like the Sony 350 is having layer change issues and that would drive me nuts

If this new firmware stops the audio dropouts we've been having, then I'll live happily ever after. My issues have been Rat, Enchanted (really bad) and several of quick drops on Wedding Crashers SD-DVD ( I know I'm leaving another one out--memory fails me). I haven't tried some of the other known problem discs such as Rambo. I use HDMI bistream audiophile to a Denon 2808.

Perhaps, but a million dollar system would not make that movie anymore watchable.

Let us know if the new firmware fixes the problems for you. Rat seems fine now for me. I'd like to get Enchanted for the kiddos but after the problems I kept reading about, I decided to hold off.

Enchanted would be a stern test. That one had a bunch of complete audio drops which would only end when I hit pause, then play. Rat had several quickies. Let us know if you try Enchanted. It wasn't that bad of a movie, either.

Has anybody seen/heard the new model BD-P2550. It reatails at $499 at best buy. Apparently it has Silicon Optix HQV processing chip. I'm ok with my 1500 but had I known that the 2550 will have this chip on it for just $100 more than the 1500, I would have waited. Considering that the Panasonic DMP-BD50 and even the upcoming Sony S550 does not have this chip, the 2550 shall easily be a bestseller. No mention of BD-Live though.

I recommended the Antec cooler several months ago and It seems many 1500 owners have tried it. If you are worried about heat this is the perfect solution. At $5 after rebate it is a steal. On another note it seems that Samsung realized that a fan might be needed. It put one in their new 2500 just released. I have also just updated the firmware with no problem. I will make some tests when I get a chance.

I like this laptop cooler so much, I actually may get one for a laptop. Also, I'm going to get the Antec A/V cooler to put on my Denon 2808 which runs pretty warm and gets all the rising heat from my other components. Funny thing, My B&K 200x5 amp at the very bottom runs much cooler than the Denon or the DirectvHDDVR. Almost no warmth at all. I guess all that processing is what generates the heat from the AVR

McGriddle, thank you so much for posting this information. I'm going to use it with my laptop but you never know, I might upgrade from my Sammy 1400 one day.

Tried to update with my 1500 but the screen is telling me I've already got the latest firmware update. I did update to 1.1 a while ago. Am I doing something wrong?

No problem! I'm just glad people on this forum helped me figure out this simple fix for skipping on the 1500. My BDs are getting pretty toasty inside the player.

I have 080621.02.

I don't know as I did the CD update. That definitely went from the 1-1 which is what you have 080621.02 to the new 1.3. Best of luck. Even if you are connected to internet, you can easily do the CD method in 15 minutes from download to burn to update. Just click on the Roxio icon when the firmware is downloaded and it will open a Roxio Blackberry program I assume was part of the download and it will lead u thru the burn. Works like a champ.
