Saw this player for an incredible price and thought I would give it a second chance. I ran it through synthetic tests this go-round to add some objectivity to my earlier criticisms of the player.

In a nutshell, if one had an option of this player or the $200 JVC XV-BP1, I would tell folks to buy the JVC time and time again. Its synthetic and real-world performance are superior. The Onkyo puts out a reasonable upscaled DVD image, but pushes red causing semi-sun tans or blushing of most people's faces.

I had forgotten how slow the player is and the sluggish menu response. Once you go to a fast player like the oppo or JVC, it's very hard going back.

here are my results using the S&M test disc

True, this player represents a real missed opportunity for Onkyo.
I hope rumors that Onkyo will introduce it's own, non-rebadged BD player next year pan out. Even though I now use an Oppo BDP-83, I'd be interested, as long as it followed in the footsteps of the DV-SP1000.

denon and marantz are introducing the next generation of high end funai clones now. Onkyo is noticeably absent from the profile 2.0 players rebadged. i wonder if onkyo's absence is a sign of the development of a proprietary player - or a sign of the poor sales of the 606!

Think this is the exact same player as the onkyo:
http://magnavox.com/p/image_player.php?id=23

think walmart is blowing these out for less than $100.

Winston,

Can't say i'm surprised, even when HD DVD was alive, all Onkyo
did was re-badge a Toshiba.

Display: Pioneer PRO-151 60" Elite
Blu-ray player: OPPO BDP-93, Sony BDP-S1000ES
Processor: Onkyo PR-SC885
Amplifier: Emotiva IPS-1 150Wx7
Game Console: Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS4
Speakers: Mythos ST(Fronts), Mythos Ten(Center), Mythos One(Rears)

Consumer Reports rates the Denon 1800 as its #1 or #2 player. What does one make of this?

If you're talkin, you ain't learnin.

consumer reports should stick to electric shavers and hatchback cars?

Yeah but the fact they both wear the same Denon badge is very misleading for consumers. Pioneer is also guilty of this.

Sign of the times I guess.

yeah, the pioneer 120 is comical compared to the 320 let alone 51.

onkyo has been a huge disappointment considering they did not even change the remote from the funai clones! same remote as a $100 sylvania! ironically, the 507 looks like a step down the funai ladder with a smaller frame and attached power cord.

another reason I do not give any value to what consumer reports says about A/V gear.

I thought the 1800 has a different DAC set.

BD-A1010/CD-S1000/PF60
HTR-6290/A-S1000/KDL46V5100
NS-555/SOAVO-900C/NS-125F

BD - 242
HD - 7

Wow, very sad.

I hope when Toshiba finally releases a player it is not some re-badged
junk. Obviously, they should be capable of a profile 2.0 player on their own.
