I had one spot on the Mist that froze up also, just after the stock boy was dragged under the overhead door and eaten. Did it twice but the rest of the movie played fine. After the movie I went back to that spot and it played thru. Chalked it up to disk issue I guess. Happened on 11/1/08

Does anyone know if the US FW v1.17 is compatible with the UK BDP-LX71? The Euro site is still showing 1.08b.

Oh how I love the irony in that question......it's time for the EU owners to be the brave ones....Who will be the first to try it?!?

From the past experience when we were all asking that same question about your 1.08 posting and the brave souls who downloaded it. The answer would appear to be that it should work. But that is purely anecdotal evidence and not intended as an answer in the affirmative. I wouldnt do it, at least not the first...

I have downloaded 1.17, but maybe I'll wait a week to see if Pioneer post it on the UK/ Euro site. For a fleeting moment there, we were ahead of our chums across the pond (with 1.08b). Now things have reverted to the usual Status Quo!

I have a feeling my impatience may get the better of me over the weekend!

Incidentally, does anyone know if 1.17 corrects the issue with the extended version of Forgetting Sarah Marshall?

Yes, that was actually fixed earlier in 1.12a.

Of course its close, its a 1080p24 disc, even a samsung 1500 will look similar with 1080p24 as the player has to do little complex work. If you want a large difference, try a 480i/1080i disc with your 55 vs. the 51 hooked up to a scaler/advanced VP source direct and get back to me...

Nope, he was correct. A workaround was made to deal with the problematic file, which was actually explained how other players played the disc in the link you quoted. But I'm sure you won't understand how that works either

Funny enough, that disc also played fine in 1.12a, as was noted in post #7 for weeks. I posted that link you quoted **after** an already-working firmware version was playing back FYEO on the 51/05, and **after** I let people know it plays back in the new 1.12a firmware! I'm sure you thought you were clever in thinking "FYEO didn't play for me on 1.08, and now it does so wo-ho I can get Ruined on that post from last week"! Remember, not everyone was using 1.08 up until yesterday. Your jab would have been more clever last month, but still showing a lack knowledge of how things work. Unlike yourself, I like to give people the real scoop on things instead of your continual ego-thumping and purchase of choice-cheerleading.

ROFLMAO! Yes, a very interesting mystery - more proof you don't know how firmware works in general.

Give 1.17 a shot, I've heard a lot of people complain about this title.

Ah, yeah, power on times here are what people are timing without a disc. Having a disc in the drive adds loadtime to power on, which makes things longer of course. 25 is about right.

Forget about firmware, I want to know more about what dragged the stock boy under the door and make a snack out of him. Was there a lot of blood? ..any screaming?

Give the movie a rent, I did and liked it so much I bought it. Quick suggestion if you do - watch the B & W version first, it gives an entire new atmosphere to the movie. To your questions: Yes, a lot of blood, and yes, a lot of screaming.

It is still taking 45 to 50 second to power on. Someone mentioned 24 seconds.
Do I need to give mine Geretol?

Perhaps unrelated but didn't someone confirm it's better to do a player reset after a firmware update? Is this the general consensus or does the firmware automatically do it?

firmware automatically does it.

At the end of the update, the disc will be spit out and the machine powers off automagically (yeah, I'm using Disney's term ). Then you power on the machine and the update is now complete.

Good news, "For Your Eyes Only" loads and plays on my BD51 with 1.17 firmware. In a very quick comparison, using my BD51 and my panny BD55 the PQ seems very close.

So would you say the Panasonic BD55 and the Pioneer BD51 are pretty much even when it comes to Blu-ray PQ?

Thanks, I will be looking forward to your report as this is the only BD movie that I have ever had an issue on with any of the FW updates. That leads me to believe that it is the Java on the disc causing the problem.

Maybe I'm not using the right words. I wasn't sure if people would understand "flashing of the ROM" vs "reset" but that is what I mean. Typically it involves user input like pressing a button on the remote that flashes the ROM and resets everything to their defaults. Is this what is happening automatically?

I believe this was corrected with firmware 1.12a according to are
very helpful beta testers, so I would think it is still fixed with 1.17.

By Black Friday you will see prices tumbling down on all BD players. I would tell people to opt for the 05 when the sales really start and it becomes even more affordable over the 51. Business at retail is horrible and the mass merchants need to move inventory. Don't be surprised to see great sales right up to Christmas. In fact in NYC, PC Richards had an early version of Black Friday on Halloween with some ridiculous prices available.

In the interim I highly recommend contacting Robert at Value Electronics as he is as good as it gets!

I updated the player last night with no problems. I'll have to wait until this weekend before watching a BD, but I know my power on time has been improved, about 25 sec now.

Again, my thanks & appreciation to Chris Walker posting again & to Pioneer for getting this up on their web site before it was expected. Now that's customer support!

I may yet be happy with this player

I would recommend the 51 instead. It's basically the same unit, especially
if your using hdmi.

I love Pioneers Elite line but in this case there is not enough difference
between the two to justify the increase in price and this is coming
from someone who owns an PRO-151 Elite. This is only my opinion,
ofcourse.

....But I do agree with you about Robert @ VE, he is the best.

I've done a factory reset after every FW update I've done. It's not in the update instructions and it's probably not required, but I figure it sure can't hurt anything. It doesn't take very long to reset the settings in my setup so I just go ahead and do it.

I think after some of the earlier FW updates in this thread some were having some minor issues after they updated, a factory reset corrected those issues IIRC.

For those about to ask, Ruined has the instructions for doing a factory reset in post #7 of this thread. (thanks Ruined!)
