I am having my 111 calibrated in two weeks and will have to move my BDI AV furniture piece away from the wall to access the rear. At that time I will definitely check it out. Based on your post I think (and hope) I have an excellent chance of it being made in Japan.

In case your wondering.
Here's the picture of where the black dot should be on the back of your 51D.
My SERIAL. NO. HIEA017448CC falls in the danger zone.
Mine does not have the black dot, if it needs to go back I will request a prepaid mailing sticker.
I'll post the outcome.
One more note this makes my Netflix turn over come to a halt.

If Pioneer wants to make us really happy they should install the next firmware update with DTS HD MA added, while they have it. Then there would be no complaints, yes I know I'm dreaming..................

And if I'm not mistaken, don't these two ranges overlap each other? Looks like range is :
HHMP000001CC - HJEA022600CC

My BDP-05FD serial # is HGEA000378CC, Manufacture date is July, 08. I guess my unit is not affected.

Well this stinks. Mine is an Oct 08/Japan build and is a "HJE021" - I just got the friggin' thing (day 33 of my 30-day window), and is tucked away in the entertainment center! And I already have to send it in?! To quote my fav tennis player, "You CANNOT be serious!"

Really, this is extremely disappointing. I bought it after reading the reputation of its quality. Fantastic. Sorry to vent. Monday should be fun.

folks should be cautious on open box units - seen them triple in the past week or two on many online retailers. my local best buy had more open box than sealed - all malaysian built too.

I guess I just got really lucky with my two 51's...both Japan 10/08 and not in the affected range. I might be pushing my luck with a third......though the price sure is right! Maybe a trip to BB is in order.

Its possible not every single unit in the range is affected, it could just be most of them or a large amount of them. Again, the symptom of this is being unable to play BD+ titles at all. Unless that happens to you, I probably wouldn't bother sending it in for a fix. Just try some recent Fox titles and see if they work. If they do, I wouldn't sweat it.

I fall in the range also-HJEA021505CC-but no black dot! Therefore no need for service. Makes sense since i have had absolutely no problems with this player. Unlike a Samsung 2550 which is now an expensive paperweight due to a Samsung firmware upgrade!!!!!!

um, unless I'm misreading you it is other way around:
no black dot = service (or at least call and try Fox BD's)
black dot = no service needed

I would still contact your place of purchase to see if they will help you out. When I bought my 51 last year I had an issue over 60 days past the purchase date (bought at Best Buy) and I was able to talk the manager into approving an exchange.

Actually, it's the other way around. If you are in the range and there is NO black dot, then your unit may be affected. If you are in the range and DO have a black dot, then your unit is fine.

Are recent Fox titles working OK for you?

My serial number is HHEAO11126CC and no black dot.

Am I reading this right that I am NOT affected and no need to call Pioneer?

Yes on the right material. It removes any overscan - even the 1-2% on some discs. Try some test patterns - it will be very obvious what you are missing if you have the Kuro on Auto for Screen size.

Isn't it time someone promoted quality as value?

Hey guys,

I have a stupid question (after being in the AV business for 12 years) I purchased a 51 last night at BB (Brand new in box) the build date is Sept 08 and the box said "Made in Japan" so I was happy right... wrong. When I got home and opened the box it was made in Malay... but I have the black mark by the serial number.

The serial number on the unit matches the box, which is good and I did the update with no problem. My question is do I have a japan model (as the box says) or a Malay unit (like it says on the back of the unit). Do all the boxes say from Japan? My serial number is like 6 numbers from the end of the bad crop of players...

Thanks in advance,

J.Mo

Play a few recent Fox titles. If they work, don't worry about it. If none of them work and you get the red screen, you need the fix. Simple.

Important: Notice of Free Update for Pioneer BDP-51FD & BDP-05FD Blu-ray Disc Players

Dear Valued Customer

Thank you for registering your Pioneer® BDP-51FD Blu-ray Disc® player. In an effort to provide you with a high quality viewing experience, we would like to make you aware of a free service update to correct a playability issue affecting only a small number of Pioneer® BDP-51FD and BDP-05FD Blu-ray Disc® Players.
According to the information you provided to us when you registered your player, it appears that your player falls within the affected range of serial numbers listed below. As such, we ask that you please determine whether you need to obtain the free service update using the information provided below. If you are unsure or have any questions, please contact Pioneer Customer Service (Warranty & Service Department) for further direction. Our contact information is listed near the bottom of this message.
AFFECTED SERIAL NUMBERS:

1. For the Pioneer BDP-05FD, players with any of the following eleven serial numbers need to obtain the free service update:

HIEA010580CC HIEA011916CC
HIEA010883CC HIEA013239CC
HIEA010970CC HIEA014915CC
HIEA011018CC HIEA014952CC
HIEA011084CC HJEA015613CC
HIEA011897CC

2. For the Pioneer BDP-51FD, players with serial numbers falling within the following two ranges may need to obtain the free service update -- please see the highlighted note below to determine what you should do next:

HIEA014000CC - HJEA022600CC**
HHMP000001CC - HIMP005000CC**

** If the player's serial numbers falls within one of the above ranges, you will need to determine whether the player has a small black dot on the back panel of the player at the center of the air outlet (as depicted in the picture below).
  • If the player DOES HAVE the small black dot, it does NOT need the free service update because the update has already been installed.
  • If the player DOES NOT HAVE the small black dot, you need to contact Pioneer Customer Service (Warranty & Service Department) and provide the player's serial number, so that Pioneer can inform you whether the update has already been installed.
If you are unsure about how to proceed, please contact Pioneer Customer Service (Warranty & Service Department) for further direction.

PURPOSE OF THE FREE SERVICE UPDATE

The purpose of the free service update is to address a playability issue which causes only the affected players described above to be unable to play certain pre-recorded Blu-ray Disc titles due to a problem with the player (not with the Blu-ray Discs). When experiencing this playability issue, the affected players will either --

1. be unable to play the affected Blu-ray Disc title and instead display on the television screen a warning message as depicted below ("Warning. Your Blu-ray Player requires an update in order to play this disc. Please visit your Blu-ray Player manufacturer's website and follow their instructions to update your Blu-ray Player."), or

2. display on the television screen a message advising you to update your player, and then attempt to play the affected Blu-ray Disc title but the picture will be severely distorted.

AFFECTED SERIAL NUMBERS:

To obtain the free service update for an affected player or if you are unsure whether your player requires the free service update, please contact Pioneer Customer Service (Warranty & Service Department) toll free at 800-PIONEER (800-746-6337). Pioneer service representatives are available Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. (Eastern Time), except on holidays.

Unfortunately, the service update cannot be downloaded via the Internet or performed using a disc. Rather, affected players must be sent to Pioneer so that we can directly perform the service update.

Sincerely,

Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc.

Hello,
Between Pioneer addressing the players affected by BD+ implementation and their release of the DTS-MA for the BDP-09, it would seem rumors of Pioneer's demise have been greatly exaggerated. Couple that with Honda's investment in Pioneer and it would seem things are looking much better.

Also, once the DTS-MA upgrade is released with hopefully further optimization and the recalled players are dealt with, the BPD-51 will be a player almost without fault considering the price.
Cheers,
AD

"Quantum of Silence" and "Transporter 3" played perfectly!! I think these are Fox, but not sure. But you are right. If you do not have the black dot, you maybe in trouble! Thanks for correcting me. Time to call Pioneer with fingers crossed! I have played mostly new stuff from Netflix for approximately two+ months. I'll call Pioneer and at the same time consider Ruined's comments. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

By the way of info, mine came from 6th Ave in February.

I have been following this forum since before I purchased a BDP-51FD in October. It has been an amazing resource, one notable for people helping each other and even occasional good humor.

This has not been our best day.

Interestingly, in some ways it was triggered by Pioneer's own email - if they had used the phrase "may fall" rather than "falls" it probably would have saved a few posts, and some running around in circles.

I shared one poster's impatience with the churn of questions about what were for the most part very clear instructions, but questions simpler than these have been answered before here with good grace. Probably even some of my own questions.

So, LS2JSTS' suggestion of moving on is probably a good one.

So, what about that firmware update.....

Thanks.....One good thing if you have the 05, the letter was very simple to figure out.

Can we add that to the advantages of the 05 as well......lol

Ruined, any insight at all in how its possible that Pioneer could know the precise 11 SN's of the 05 that require the update? It seems very odd that it would be such a low number and also that they would know the exact SN of those affected.....What gives?

LOL, I like how Pioneer calls sending in your unit for service a "Free Update", like they're doing you a favor. If it was the auto industry it would be a "recall". Hmmmmm...

I received the email from Pioneer but neither of my players seem to fall in the affected range of SN's, so I assume they sent the email to anyone that registered players.
