anyone using HDMI tried letting the amp do the decoding vs letting the player do the decoding, to see if there is a difference in sound between the two ?

Thank you for the answer, now my two choices are the panasonic 55 or the new Oppo.

Yep same for me. Seems like a real boneheaded thing to do.

Ah-Ok, Thanks for clearing that up for me.

You will need to change the "speaker settings" on the S550 to turn off the surround back (set them to "none") and the other speaker settings to match your config.
What I don't know is if by setting the surround back option to "none" if it will downmix 7.1 to 5.1 or if you'll just loose the two surround back channels...I would assume it would.

Thank you.

Going to try the Sony Card $150 off deal. Seems like a great price.

Hi, I'm new and this is my first post.

I just picked up a s550 at a local Sonystyle store (The one I went to have several in stock). Since the web site charges sales tax anyway. And best of all - no wait!

Can some owner or audio guru help?

My set up: HDMI for Video only. 5.1 analog out to my Denon receiver''s Ext in. SBR and SBL indicated for no speaker.

When playing standard DVD (not Blu-ray), the display says
- 'DTS 3/2.1 48khz' for DTS, or
- 'Dolby Digital 3/2.1 48khz' for Dolby Digital

instead of 5.1. I tried both multi-channel and optical. they display the same.

Is the 3/2.1 the same as 5.1? If not what do I need to do?
Is the 48 khz the best sound for DVD? If not what do I need to do?
For a 5.1 analog out set up, is it right to connect to SR and SL (instead on SBR, SBL)?

Thanks!

3/2.1 is Denon's way of saying 5.1, I believe it stands for 3 front/2 back (or side) and yes they should be connected to SR and SL.

What about a 6.1 speaker array?

I have an Integra 7.2 (6.1 analogue inputs - no HDMI), so I've been waiting on the 550 to solve my BD needs. I'm not particularly keen on adding an additional rear surround due to room logistics, nor do I really have a need to replace the AVR otherwise.

Someone asked about "y" tapping pre-outs from a 550 somewhere in this thread. Is that really an option for a 6.1 speaker set-up? Could I "Y" connect the two rear surround outputs into the single rear surround input on my Integra?

You will never get lossless over coax or optical since it is beyond their capabilities....you can only do this with HDMI 1.3a. Since your receiver won't do audio over HDMI, you'll have to rely on analog input on your receiver.
To get multi-channel DTS-MA decoding to LPCM through the analog output do the following:
On the S550, change the Audio Output Priority to "multi channel analog". Change the Speaker settings to set the speakers according to your config, set the surround back speakers to None.
Set the "BD Audio" setting to "direct"
Connect 6 cables to the analog output of the S550 to the analog inputs of your receiver. You will get 6 channels of LPCM.

I ordered my 550 this afternoon from Crutchfield as they have them in stock with free shipping. As of 6pm EST they already shipped it! So, for those looking for one, check there.

Question now please for those that have one----I am running a 6.1 system and I've read here about the 5.1 guys and the 7.1 guys on how to set things up with no 6.1 info. I am running a Rotel RSP-1068 with 7.1 analog inputs. Does the 550 allow you to choose a SINGLE rear back in the setup menu for analog outputs? If not, any suggestions like a Y splitter or something?

For those interested, you can download a really nice high-res picture of the 550 here:

One thread versus having to keep track of a dozen different threads on the same subject. You'll notice moderators locking threads on the S550 and pointing them here instead.

For those who are concerned with the blue face because all your other players / receivers are blacks, it's not that bad! From looking at it in person, the blue is darker than shown in the picture, I actually think it's quite stylish.

Given the limited toolbox available on the 550 to taylor the analog outputs, thanx to the posts of all who have recently purchased one i'll pass on the 550. My setup won't tolerate over an 80hz crossover point with bass becoming highly locatable. Wouldn't a stand alone 7.1 multi format DAC be the best thing that could happen about now! My Sony ES receiver works so flawlessly and super clean audio i can't abandon her for LPCM...not yet.

Just picked up my 550 at my local SonyStyle store. I didn't want to order online and see them in stores before mine arrived via UPS. Instant Gratification, gotta love it.

Standard definition DVD- PQ on the 550 is definately better than my LG upconverting dvd player/burner. I noticed details on dvd's I've seen many times that I never saw on my LG. Colors seemed more vibrant, black richer.
AQ better as well. sounds clearer.

Remote- only the middle of the remote lights up. player controls and navigation buttons only.

Volume control on remote will only control volume on a TV. not an AV reciever. No IR Codes for anything but TV's. Who buys a BR player with 7.1 analog jacks and is using the speakers built into the TV??? C'mon Sony!!!

I bought Saw IV which has DTS HD MA 7.1. Player indicates outputing 7.1 to my Onkyo HT-R550 via anolog outputs. My reciever displays "Direct" but I can adjust speaker outputs individually.

Blu-Ray PQ and AQ are incredible. Much better than I get on Direct TV HD.

Glossy surface on front and top of player look great but seems to be a dust magnet. disc tray seems solid, well made and smooth.

If you are waiting for much more extensive bass management for analogs I'm afraid you may be waiting a while (or never).

Is it me or did Sony seem to just slip in a complete player at a reasonable price?

I don't hear many complaints about buggy operation either (at least not yet).

Exactly.

Called Sony multiple times, talked to first and second level "support" and the answers varied from they "don't know" to "there is no crossover - must be controlled by your receiver."

Frustrating to say the least.

Can the Sony BDP-S550 in some way handle still digital photos like the Panosonic even without the card slot? Not a deal breaker, but a handy gadget.
Figure the PQ will be about equal on both, but what about good old fashioned stereo 2 speaker sound?

Is there an analog stereo output that gives good simulated surround sound effect to the 2 speaker stereo on the BDP-S550? Would the Panasonic BD-55 be better for this old set-up as the specs seem to indicate?
2) I see the new Panasonic BD55 has a memory slot for still digital photos. How does the Sony handle photos. Is it as simple as the slot set-up?

To get multi-channel DTS-MA decoding to LPCM through the analog output do the following:
On the S550, change the Audio Output Priority to "multi channel analog". Change the Speaker settings to set the speakers according to your config, set the surround back speakers to None.
Set the "BD Audio" setting to "direct"
Connect 6 cables to the analog output of the S550 to the analog inputs of your receiver. You will get 6 channels of LPCM.

My S550 should arrive at the end of this week. I understand everything you said here, with one exception. Why is it necessary to set BD Audio to "direct"?

Can S550 be set to output SD DVDs at 480i over hdmi? I want to bypass all internal scaling in the player for SD. Of course I still want BD to be at 1080p.

Thx,

For any of you that have a Sony Rewards account, they finally lowered the price of the 550 to $399 on sonyrewards.com. (Last week it was still $499, while SonyStyle was $399). The wife keeps putting in the nightly Wheel of Fortune Bonus Puzzle and has managed to earn a 15% discount. 12 puzzles a month gets you the discount. That makes it a little less than the Buy.com price. Guess I will never laugh at her typing in the puzzle again!

Otherwise you will only get the lossy core DTS 5.1 decoded to LPCM and not lossless DTS-HD MA decoded to LPCM. Apparently a technical limitation of the current player.

Yes it can. My previous player only output 480p over HDMI. For those using another scaling solution the Sony does give 480i over HDMI but you will need to change in the menu each time.

My processor only has 5.1 analog inputs, no hdmi. Is there a setting to output 5.1 analog or do you do 7.1 and ignore the rear channels?

thanks
