You are exactly right. Just make sure the AVR can decode DTS MA.

I still haven't seen an answer to the question of if you have a 5.1 setup and are using the analog outs, which surrounds do you set to "none" - rear or side?

It was answered in post #520.

Since 5.1 doesn't have any rears, you'd set that to none.

So today is my birthday and I finally got a chance to dig my teeth into the 550. Amazing, I love it, everything I wanted...almost. I've read through nearly every post in the thread (all but 4 pages) and I still am unclear on if there exists a way in my setup to get full 7.1 soundstage out of a 5.1 movie. Such as was done with Standard DVD's via PLxII and DTS-Neo 6. Here are the facts:

Sony S-550 out analog to Onkyo 7.1 system. Getting perfect 7.1 sound out of 7.1 discs but any 5.1 disc doesn't use the Surround Back Speakers. Is there any way to make this happen with analog or is this limitation in the BR disc?

Happy birthday. PLIIx is a digital signal processing mode. It can take 2ch and 5.1 digital sources and matrix additional rear channels. Unfortunately, you are feeding analog out of the S550 and digital processing cannot be applied by your receiver. It would work if you had an HDMI digital path for the 5.1 from the player or if your AVR could re-digitize the analog inputs.

The only local store that has the S550 is Circuit City.

The manual. It's a rare feature generally limited to more expensive processors.

Thank you, I was afraid of that. I was hoping the 550 might have an option to matrix the Surround Rear Speakers before sending it out the analogs but that's probably too much to ask from a machine at this price point. I suppose I'll hit radio shak and look into an RCA switcher, maybe I can do it manually.

FYI- I asked at our local Salt Lake City Best Buy and they said that the 550 will be available Oct 27 at their online store. They won't stock any on the shelf at that location and it's going for full retail.

Sony often does this; many of their products are available at their SonyStyle stores before they hit Best Buy.

Perhaps part of it is every S550 is going out the door at Sony Style for $399 as opposed to whatever discount Best Buy is applying this week.

(Speaking of which, I assume buy.com isn't an authorized Sony Dealer… are they?)

Bought my 550 at Bestbuy 2 days ago (10-18). Had 4 of them stacked on the floor a day proir to that and when I went back to buy it, they were stacked overhead with no display out, which I found a little strange. I personally beleive whoever was putting them up just thought they were more 350's.
Had a 12% coupon and snatched it up. There is a 10% coupon on the net now. Dont remember the address, but will post if needed.

Selling for 399.00.

550 owners... Urgent as I want to pick on up shortly. Thanks.

Hi fellas: good comments so far but could someone tell me what happens with the sound from disks with only PCM 5.1 ( Patriot, hellboy and other sony titles).
How will this work with a 7.1 analog multichannel hookup?

Thanks.

Considering getting a 550 from sonystyle and using the 150.00

You'll get five channels of audio. No rears. The player does not have any options to matrix additional channels.

Thanks.

Just wasn't sure what to look for in the manual. Most of them are a bear to read and didn't know if it would actually say "re-digitizes analog inputs" or something else written in "geek-speak" that I wouldn't know how to interpret. I'll peruse my manual and see what I can find out.

Fedex delivered the BDP-S550 Saturday from Sony Style. I connected it to a Denon AVR-1909 via HDMI, and do the decoding at the receiver. The blue "HD AUDIO" light on the AVR-1909 came on when watching DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD content. I watched Pan's Labyrinth in DTS-HD MA, The Godfather in Dolby TrueHD, and Casino Royale in PCM 5.1. The audio was outstanding, even limited by my 5.1 surround configuration. I didn't hear any popping in Pan's Labyrinth as described in other posts.

Power on and loading time was very fast, especially compared to the BDP-S300, which seemed to take a lifetime.

One thing I don't cared for is the player doesn't always start playing the disc when inserted. I have to sometimes select BD-ROM from the "Home" screen. Anyone know a reason, or better, a fix for this?

The other thing I don't care for, though minor, is the info screen doesn't display total running. It displays a time bar with the current position, but not the total time. Otherwise, the layout of the information is greatly improved over the BDP-S300.

System:
Sony KDL-46XBR2
Denon AVR-1909
Sony BDP-S550
Infinity TSS-4000 Center, 4 TSS-1100 Satelites, Jamo Subwoofer.

So is the consensus that the low analog subwoofer level may be a bug Sony will fix?

My processor just passes through 5.1 as-is - no channel level adjustments or bass management, so it sounds like I'd need to set the sub at 0 db and all the other channels to -10 dB if my processor's levels are already calibrated, correct?

Not sure where you got that idea from this thread. It's not a bug. LFE always needs to be boosted by 10db in the processor. With digital, the software takes care of it. With analog, the user has to do it. There's a complete explanation in a sticky in the Audio Theory forum. LFE, subwoofers and interconnects explained

You do bass management in the player. Many receivers have an option to boost the sub for the analog inputs. Doing it there won't affect your already calibrated digital inputs. If you can't do that, you can lower the non-LFE channels coming out of the player, which will restore the proper balance. Then, raise the overall volume level in your receiver when listening to analog sources.

BIslander, thanks for your reply. I was just reading my Sony STR DA 7ES manual and noticed that it has bass management for the Multichannel input.

This Receiver has 2 sets of multichannel inputs, so I can input a 7.1 on the multi 1 and a 5.1 on the multi 2. Both of them are able to boost the sub level by up to 10db.

This makes me more inclined to the 550. The only thing is that I used to like the memory of my Sony NS 715, It has memory storage for 40 dvds etc. This enabled me to watch/stop eject and play again at my leasure without having to search where I left off.

I also had liked the frame/slow play to catch those bloopers. My daughters and I have lots of fun with this stuff.
Thanks again.

Not sure if this was mentioned yet or not, but the player is in stock at the Sony Store B&M locations. I bought one last week here in Columbus.
