Given the similarities between this unit and Denon's 3800, why would someone choose the slower unit and the one with a brief warranty (both Denon)? For what these players cost, a 1-year warranty is shortchanging the consumer's investment. I have owned some Denon pieces in the past as well as Sony ES, and find the latter to be more reliable and trouble-free even with the longer warranty. Based on my experience, I'd vote for Denon doing the longer warranty, not Sony!

My point? just because two units are using the same chipset, the image quality may not necessarily be the same.

That's what I'm saying. I 100% totally agree with you. it is just that this player was getting hammered in the other thread due to the huge price with same chip used and such. I mean look at DAC's for audio, same thing applies. Diff signal paths, power supplies, and chip sets and you have a totally diff product.

I hope this player shines with picture quality!

I would retract my comparison statement that the 51FD is definitely better by saying they are more similar than different. I could not say one is clearly better than the other. I will say the 51FD sending source direct (480i) into my Edge (when I used it) did give a superior image. Upconverting both to 1080p or 1080i had very similar results. I can't post one is superior. Maybe the Pro reviewers can figure it out better than me. I used my Sony VPL VW200, Panasonic 50" 1080p plasma (new 850 series), Toshiba 32 REV 1080p LCD), Viewsonic 26" LCD and for fun a Sanyo Z5 720p pj. On all my displays the differences were negligible. When the Pros review components I am not sure how many players they can compare at once or how many different displays they use. I have been using a total of 8 different Blu-ray players and 5 different displays. I also tweak the picture on each to squeeze out every last drop. And I also test them with VPs as well as without VPs. I just want to be clear here and let everyone know I am not just sticking in a movie and posting. I take notes on each title which coincides with each player and of course each display. Yes, I am sick! TheBland is right. So finally, I will say the 3800 and S5000ES are at the top for SD dvd performance and the 51FD, BD35 are right behind them. Then even not much further is the rest of the newer generations. I am currently BETA testing a Blu-ray player (which I can't say what model it is) that will make things very interesting one day.

So now I am heading back to the lab... More results on the test discs to come in Part 3! As well as other questions...

So Joe how does the beta oppo compare?

Come on. . . I can try can't I,

Thanks Joe, you really have me salivating over this player. Currently I have the Pioneer 05, which I bought as an interim player until these high-end players start coming out. Thinking about the S5000ES of course, as well as the upcoming Pioneer 09 and the elusive uber-Denon they're supposed to unveil at CES.

It may be time for the 05 to go on eBay.

It seems Joerod is liking the "beta" player, and from my understanding will be a bit below $1,000.

My only concern with the Oppo, is it uses the same chip as the DVDO EDGE (which I plan on getting, soon), so I'm not sure I would/could benefit from using the same chip in two different components.

Joerod, how well does the S5000 respond to your EDGE? I see you posted pictures in the EDGE thread. I hear some players respond well to external processors, while others don't. I like the 51FD, but the new chipset has me on edge, so I think I will pass, for the time being.

Joerod,

one simple question I think needs answering on this player -

Adjustment options for the analog audio outs - are they exactly the same as the 550??? I would have expected this "Flagship" player with its high quality analog audio side to have had a similar level of audio setup options to the Denon 3800. So - can you adjust the sub crossover frequency and all that good stuff or have Sony short-changed us?

Cheers

Joe -- your main quest is for a stand alone player with a good reliability factor. You've been loading a huge number of Blu-ray disks into the player, apparently with good success.

I may be missing the point, but I don't know what condition your discs are in (probably pretty good). From your results, do you think this player is more reliable for reading disks in questionable condition (e.g., rental disks)? Do any of your other players work notably well for such poor disks?

Sorry, I have had one busy Monday today! I will most likely get to part 3 tomorrow afternoon. I will answers a couple of questions now though...

I will say we do rent from Netflix and the few I tried from them went in and loaded without issues. I have had a few in the past refused to be loaded and that was on various players. I will be anxious to get one in bad condition to see what the 5000ES does with it. Of course I am not a fan of loading crappy conditioned discs into my high end players.

I like Mark's assessment on calling this unit a ES3.

And again I can't comment on any BETA units I am testing. Not even thru PMs. Please respect that.

I forgot to also answer about the S5000ES working with a VP. It works well with the Edge and I imagine it would do well with any VP. For SD dvds you can send in 480i if you choose and get pretty good results. The S5000ES does a pretty good job on its own though doing 720p, 1080i and 1080p. I still have my trusty Onkyo SP1000 in my main set up for SD dvds and may continue to do so. That is just because I recently put one back in there when it was discontinued (got it for an unbelievable cost) and really missed having one. I could easily "get by" without it though but why not keep that flexibility in my set up? It's fun using another player to entertain the guests with slideshows and movie trailors while the other unit has the movie on pause waiting...

If i were to start again, this would be the player to get. The Denon is great and fully reliable but this one is faster... and better warranty.

I have a tracking number on this coming in from Sony Style today

I owned the earlier S1 ES which I liked but was too slow: sold it and went on a quest for better machines...tried lots including the Panasonic, Denon, the Sony 2000ES (still very slow) and others ...

a Sony 301 from Costco held me over until recently I started testing players again: some under NDA

ES series has always been a favorite for me: we shall see

Load speed is important to me...perhaps the single biggest factor... and next 5.1 analog audio

Mark,

Did you find the ES RS-232 codes yet? If they are like the Sony Qualia codes, I might be able to help figure them out.

Are these parameters similar to your ES RS-232 protocol similar to the [below] Sony Qualia codes?

Baud: 38400
Parity: Even
Data Bits: 8
Stop Bits: 1

POWER ON for example: A9 17 2E 00 00 00 3F 9A
Requires null modem adapter
