My bittersweet parting with my Sony S5000ES has turned into a nightmare. I sold my perfectly working perfect condition player on ebay for $500+ and the buyer paid, and I shipped it fully insured. The buyer got it today and sent me a message saying it won't power on!! Am I getting scammed? Any suggestions. I have my serial number (from the photos in the listing). My player is still under warranty.

I hate stuff like this! And from being on eBay since 1999, they will side with the buyer if a complaint is made against you. Did your listing indicate any type of warranty?

You really have 2 options here, 1 - provide refund to buyer minus return shipping costs 2 - both you and the buyer file a claim against the shipper.

Stinks!

Have you ever tried selling gear on Audiogon? If I have a peice of high end gear, that where I usually go to sell it. Way better the eBay (just my opinion).

I should have done that. I know about audiogon even though I have not actually bought or sold there. I have been on eBay since 1999 as well and during the early days they were filled with decent honest people. I guess now a days, it has its share of scammers. I have not figured out yet if he is a scammer or not. He was quick to send a message asking for return though. I could not read anger in his message. If it was genuinely bad, his first reaction should be "wth did I send him". My brother got scammed before on ebay by a ruthless buyer and eBay/paypal sided with the buyer and he ended up losing a lot since he never got his original product back.

Sorry to hear that, really sucks. Had that happen to me once about a year ago. Sold a DAC on ebay that had worked just fine before I shipped it (Audioengine D1), listed specifically no returns like I always do. Buyer messages me that the DAC doesn't work at all (says it doesn't turn on) and immediately opens an ebay case. He paid return shipping and got his money back. I got the DAC back, and of course it powered on just fine and worked fine. I'm guessing the guy got buyer's remorse -- either that or he was espexily clueless. I reported him to ebay and wrote him quite the nasty email after that, lol.

I was having a little bit of sellers remorse after selling my excellent player. I was going to use my fat ps3 for bluray since I have a NAD t775hd receiver that does hdmi audio. At this stage, I would be happy if I get my exact same player back in working condition. However, I am worried if he is going to pull something nefarious such as switch my player for a defective one. I have my serial number in the eBay listing photos. If that will help! My brother got scammed so badly that he ended up losing his receiver and his money. I guess people keep coming up with creative ways to cheat frown.gif. Any way I am going to keep my fingers crossed. May be he just did not plug it in properly. What bothers me is that his message to me did not have any anger at all. He just wanted to return it. If I were to buy something that is doa, I would be angry as heck and would let the seller know!

Having your serial number in the pictures of your auction is good. Kind of makes it hard to pull a fast one. And is definite proof if you get a different back. Fingers crossed for you......hope you get it back in good condition!

Or maybe he just had buyer's remorse, and used any excuse he could grasp at. What does the feedback look like for him? How many transactions? How long an ebayer?

I talked to the buyer and he is ok with my brother (who lives nearby to him) to come and inspect and get the unit. He is going to do it tomorrow. Is there a way to verify that the unit was opened by him? Is there a seal that will show it was opened? I am planning on calling sony for warranty.

I did the same and do recall that these absolutely did come with the 5 year warranty.

So you should have no trouble with Sony and by all means post here if you do!

I recently purchased a Sony 5000es second hand. As a video player, it is as phenomenal as the reviews say it is. However, there are certain short-comings that are really annoying. When purchasing a player, I want something I'm going to keep around for a long time.

It performs fantastically as a disc player, but dismally as a media player. It does not support any extra video formats such as avi, mkv etc. It has no usb interface for media at all. It displays jpeg pictures like I've never seen them - beautifully - but there's one significant drawback: the loading speed of each picture. It is pathetic at best. It is sluggish as hell. Now I have the bdp-490. It does everything the 5000es doesn't. Except it is an entry level video player, and doesn't perform at the same level of excellence as its big brother. I want the best of both worlds. Due to these unacceptable shortcomings, I want to sell my my 5000es. The real question is, what do I replace it with? Advice would be welcomed. :-)

I would suggest an Oppo (BDP-103 in you don't require 7.1 analog support) or the Cambridge Cambridge Audio Azur 751BD (built on the Oppo BDP-103 platform) which has a Wolfson analog implementation. If price is a consideration consider the Panasonic DMP-BDT500 (supports FLAC) or the Sony BDP-S790 (supports SACD) in that order. Again, these are just my suggestions.smile.gif

Pioneer Elite PRO-151FD

Zektor MAS7.1

Classé CA-2200/CA-5200

Oppo BDP-105, Denon DVD-5910CI, Cambridge 752BD, Cambridge 640C V2

Paradigm Signature S8, Paradigm Signature ADP1

Paradigm Signature ADP3, Paradigm Signature C5

REL R-505 Sub (2)

Oppo BDP-93, BDP-103D, Pioneer BDP-320

Sony BDP-S790

I sent my Sony S5000ES to Sony for warranty service. It has been over 3 weeks and finally they got their parts (apparently a logic board) and they said most probably it will be fixed by next week. Oh the wait!

I have ended up with two 5000ES'.
Would you the general consensus be that if your not using the analog output on the Sony a Oppo 103 would offer better audio and video performance via HDMI?
I don't care about all the streaming stuff. My little Zotac running Openelc XBMC & a Roku takes care that nicely.

Not as beefy as my SCD-1 but still very impressive.
The current crop of player feel like if you not careful a strong breeze will make them float away.

Thanks in advance for your opinions.

No. The Oppo 103 is no better at video or audio than the Sony. I owned both. Only the Darbee models can outperform the Sony on video.

Yah I have a bunch of those as well.
For SACD and CD I use my cherished Kern modded SCD-1
I'm sure there are many that trump it's performance today-like any of the Esoteric K series players.
I really like the K-01, but I digress.

Not mine, but same machine.
