The MVBD2511 is Memorex's newer Blu-ray player. It's a Profile 1.1 player with an MSRP of $269.99 but it sold on Walmart's website a few weeks ago for $169. I'm not sure if any other retailer carries it right now.

Here are the specs from Memorex's website:

Product Features
  • Progressive scan Blu-ray Disc player
  • 1080p capability for higher defintiion video content
  • Full HD 1080p, DVD up-conversion up to 1080p (480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p), 24p, 60p video frame rate
  • Multi-channel audio content (supports more advanced Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD)
  • BD-ROM, DVD-ROM, DVD, DVD-R/-RW, DVD+R/+RW, DVD-R DL, DVD+R DL, CD-ROM, CD, CD-R/-RW
  • 16:9 / 4:3 picture select
  • On-screen graphical user interface
  • Slow motion function (2x 4x 8x)
  • RW/FF play function (2x 4x 8x 16x)
  • VFD display

Connectivity
  • HDMI v1.3 digital output
  • Component video output
  • S-video output
  • Composite video output
  • Optical audio output
  • Coaxial audio digital output
  • Analog 7.1 channel audio output
  • USB 2.0 input

I have owned this player for about a week and I have had problems getting The Dark Knight to load. That is the only BD I have tried so far. The disc would get stuck right after the MPAA rating screen at 00:06. It also went to a snowy screen a few times while trying to load the movie. I was able to get it to load after unplugging the player and plugging it back in and reloading the BD.

I contacted Memorex and they took note that I have had problems getting a movie to load but didn't care to know the specific movie or any other details. I'm sure they have been made well aware of the need of a firmware update. Hopefully it shows up soon but since I had this player before they even listed it as a product on their website, who knows. If there isn't a firmware update in the next 2 weeks, I'm going to return it.

I have played a few regular DVDs on it and I thought they looked excellent.

Let the disk stay at they 0:06 place for a while. I first kept thinking it was getting stuck after a minute or so and would shut it down, but just leave it there. It does eventually start the movie, sometimes after a few minutes wait. Very frustrating I know but it will start playing.

The first Batman Begins movie taught me this lesson.

I left it there for 5 minutes or so when I first tried to play the movie and gave up. Unplugging and trying again seemed to work and it would get passed that spot after about 15-30 seconds.

Just got this player the other day. It has loaded Dark Knight 4 or 5 times without any problems. It played Journey to the Center of the Earth fine also.

Unlike the 2510 it recognizes an external NTFS drive. I have played an 8GB .ts file, and .vob files but I haven't tried any other file formats yet.

So far I haven't had any issues with the player except that the video has a red tint that I had to compensate for with my tv's video settings. For a $170 Blu-ray player/hd streaming media box, I can live with that.

Everything was working fine. Then I tried Disc 2 of Wall-e. It gave me a Firmware warning but it played OK. So, I installed the 12/24 Firmware update (after several attempts of mistakenly burning it to a Mac Only disc). Now when I put in a blu ray disk in it says 'Unknown Disk.' I've tried five discs. Regular DVD's play fine. I've tried 'Reset Settings.' In fact, I notice they instruct you to 'Reset Settings' before you install a firmware update.

So, any suggestions?

Does anyone know what remote code to enter so that I can control the MVBD2511 with another remote? I emailed Memorex support and they were worthless.

Thanks.

Has anybody been able to get this to work on the 2511? I rented it the other day but it just hung up on the loading screen 4 or 5 times. I know the 2510 has been having issues with the movie but I hoped the "newer technology" we have would have done the trick. Oh well, this is my first real issue with the player. So far I have played The Dark Knight, Wanted, and the Bucket List without any issues.

We need this board to get active like the 2510 post is. As cheap as this player was around Christmas there has to be plenty of them out there. Also with Memorex not lending any type of support in any timely fashion there are going to be a lot of questions we might be able to get an answer to here. Lets hear the good stories as well as the bad, it is the best way to learn about this stuff.

It's true there is no real info about this player anywhere. At the moment there doesn't seem to be anyone selling it either. I looked on walmart.com and it shows as now being available in the stores but no stores anywhere near me have it at all.

Unlike the 2510, like the olevia, Curthis Mathes and Element, which we know to be Contel OEM machines based on the Sigma reference design, we have no info on the 2511.

I was somewhat interested because it has a full 7.1 rather then just 5.1 analog outs.

Journey worked fine on my 2511. I've found on most of the "common" issues, like Batman DK, it won't load. You then power off (or unplug the unit), and whalla, the disk works. And yes, I wasted at least 5 or 6 CD-R's trying varying 2510 FW upgrades. Also tried updating via the USB slot. I've read the 2510 FW won't work on the 2511. Most blu-rays I've thrown at it (all current, new releases, have worked, incl. Casino Royale, Wanted, Journey, DK, and Eagle Eye). I've got an 32" LG full 1080p HDTV, and really can't tell any discernable difference betwee br, and DVD. I didn't think the br would be so sensative about FW updates. Seems the manufactures need to iron out some bugs.

I've tried using the 2510's firmware with the 2511, it's a no go. Not surprising, as the chipset is from different manufacturers.

Currently testing 3D with Sammy DLP, shutter glasses, and HTPC

So far I have been able to play Dark Knight, Journey, and Ironman without any problems.

I have also been able to play .ts, .vob, .mpg, .avi (xvid & divx) movies on an NTFS external usb drive. MKV files won't play.

I bought this player for Christmas, so far no problems with Batman DK nor Wall-E. They had better issue a firmware update or the natives will get restless

I also got this for Christmas...the wife saw Walmart had it for $129. She made it a gift of the player and Jingle all the way (for a holiday theme). Well, surprise, surprise...Jingle wants a firmware update. Like everyone else, I check memorex each day waiting for something to be posted. (I submitted a support ticket, but I guess "reply within 48 hrs" is in memorex hours, not earth hours) No luck getting the 2510 firmware to be recognized, but that's probably a good thing.

Other than that, I've been happy with the player. A couple disks (Dark Knight...) had some kinks, but they all played. (except Jingle)

Since I'm running it via component (my projector runs 1080i but doesn't have an HDMI port) and coax for audio, I haven't been able to compare the dvd upscaling quality. I did have to go into the setup and change the default audio to bitstream to have 5.1 sound.

The USB connect is a great feature. I hooked up an external drive and have been able to play HD movie trailers and .ts files alike. (it doesn't seem to recognize m2ts extensions, so I renamed them to .ts and it played fine)

I also let it play through a folder of jpg's and it seemed smooth, speedy loads cycling through pictures and they looked great on the big screen.

So far I've been able to play the DK BD after doing a reset, multiple DVDs, a divx movie on a CD-RW, and a divx movie on a sandisk cruzer thumb drive. I need to try another Blu-ray to see how it performs with a movie other than DK.

I got this player two weeks ago as well (I got two - one for my sister as well). I got "Paris Je T'aime" on Blue-Ray from Netflix, it always freezed at 16 seconds, on both our machines. Returned the disk, thinking it was defective, and the replacement they sent did the same thing. I have found that the player hangs quite frequently. Very frustrating. I hope that a firmware update is released and fixes this.

Make sure you're reporting the problem to Memorex. They probably won't know of a problem unless it's brought to their attention.

alainca, did you try just letting it sit there for what seems like a long time? The dark Knight kind of does the same thing, but after what seems like 5 min, continues on and plays.

Finally got a response from Memorex. Nothing helpful, but at least they responded..

I did some research on the MVBD2511 for you. Unfortuntately, there is
no firmware update available for this model at this time. I have
forwarded your email to our Research and Developement team to see if
they can provide any update; however, I am not sure if one is
available. I do apologize for the inconvenience.

Kind Regards,
Emily

I played Traitor BD on this last night. It played it without a problem, but Traitor has crappy video quality in some parts of the movie, especially the low light scenes.

Dark Knight needs to be unplugged, Jingle all the way doesn't work, and neither does my Planet of the Apes box. The Bonds all work, but Die Another Day flickered a couple times when I switched the resolution to 720(I had been using 1080P and let my px5080u do the conversion). Wall E works. Golden Compass, Basic Instinct, First blood, rambo 2, sex and the city, terminator, casino royale, The Rock, saw 2, Spiderman 3, RZ's Halloween, Halloween '78, Godfather trilogy, all seem to play fine.

I received an email today from customerservice@memorexelectronics.com on my Memorex Bluray MVBD 2511 indicating they were putting in a request to send me copy of the updated firmware in the mail. If I had any problems to call Customer Service 800 919-3647

Hopefully this will enable us to play Horton Hear a Who which so far has been the only one we have been unable to play.

I have been visiting this forum for awhile to see if anyone found out anything so I wanted to share this news with all of you.

Of course I still have to receive the disc but at least (after 4 emails) someone answered me.

Yep. That's right. Memorex themselves, sent me an actual CD-R firmware update disk for my 2511. They provided a poorly visable copied instructions, which I followed to a tee. They instructed to do a factory reset first, followed by the actual upgrade process, which is no different than how it's supposed to be. But to my surprise? I get an error message indicating "This is not a firmware disk". WTF! Being a programmer myself, I did the obvious first move, by inserting the disk in my laptop and viewing the actual files. They're all dated 12/15/2008; not even the latest firmware date of the 2510 (which is 12/24/2008). Several on this forum, have reported the 2510 firmware won't work on the 2511. I don't honestly know if they gave me 2511 upgrade firmware or not. It just doesn't work. The player pretty well plays everything I throw at it. Yes, it burped on Batman DN, but I did what everyone else did; turned off the unit, turned it back on, and it played. I sent them a "straight forward" email response asking for their advise. I did indicate that if this keeps up, and if I encounter a "real" error, that I'll return the unit to Wal-Mart, and upgrade to something else. I am hopeful this is just a minor glitch, and will keep looking for that future firmware upgrade that will one day, actually work.

Sounds like they sent you the 2510 firmware from 12-15. Hopefully they'll have an update soon, as even the 2510 hasn't gotten the promised "week of 1-5" update yet.

Thanks for the heads up on the update. I will keep you posted on how it works (or not) when I do get the CD.

Guess I got too excited because I was planning on returning it this weekend to Walmart as a dissatisfied customer and when I got the reply I changed my mind. I guess I will give it a chance but this is why I did not want to invest a fortune in a Bluray because of the technology changes but I think I am about to learn a lesson.

Okay. I ripped them a little a couple of posts ago (see above about getting a firmware disk directly from Memorex). Their response is below. Although I've had pretty good luck with the 2511, I think it's going back to Wal-Mart this weekend. I'm upgrading to the Samsung BDP-1500. I've read pretty good reviews on it.

Memorex:
Thank you for contacting Memorex Customer Support. Your reference number is 28250xxx Unfortunately, there is no firmware upgrade for the MVBD2511 at this time. Memorex is currently working on a new firmware version that will upgrade your player to be compatible with the newest DVD's. As soon as it becomes available, we will post the firmware on www.memorex.com. Kind Regards,EmilyMemorex.

Hello everyone, never posted on AVS before but I figured I'd add some info to this thread.

I picked up the 2511 last month as my first blu ray player, and I'm pretty happy with it. The multi channel audio output was a big plus for me and my non-hdmi receiver, as is the ability to easily play files through the USB. So far, the only BDs I've played are Predator, Wall E, and Band of Brothers, and they've all played perfectly.

Now for the bad. Lately, I've been watching a lot of tv dvds, namely How I Met Your Mother and Simpsons. Each time I play a disc, Spanish subtitles are turned on by default. I've tried changing the settings from the setup menu, resetting the player, and even unplugging it for a couple hours, but nothing. On the Simpsons, I can't even change the subtitles with the remote. I have to go into the disc menu and turn them off. This problem exists on all the standard dvds I've tested, and is driving me insane. I'm about to go back to playing them on my Toshiba A2.

Okay. As I indicated in an earlier post, I took my mvbd-2511 back to Wal-mart. Right off the bat, was a minor problem; the greeter scanned it, and it didn't even register as a current item. I proceeded to the Cust. Service desk. I explained my problems with freezing, and lack of any firmware update being available. They acted like it was going to be discontinued, which added to my reason for returning it. Dumb me, forgot to re-pack the A/V cables, so back home I went. 2nd time worked okay, and I got a full credit back. Back to the electronics dept I went, and picked up a Samsung BDP-1500. I had already burned the latest firmware update to a CD-R, the night before. Did the firmware update, and NO PROBLEMS! I haven't had too much time to play with it, nor have I watched an entire movie, as my daughter pretty well took control by playing video games all day (and night). My suggestion, is that if anyone is having ANY issues with the 2511, take it back, spend the extra bucks, and get something more reputable. I think this is "learning" curve for Memorex, as I'm sure they'll get a lot of returns. You get what you pay for. Good luck to everyone else. I'm now switching over to the Samsung forum. - jim_from_il
