Neuromancer,
Please add a link to Bill's FAQ in the first post. Make it big and splashy.

To everyone here: Pretty soon, every fifth post in this thread is going to start reading:

"Better" is a subjective term. On my 61" Sammy LED, I think it's a very slightly less noisy image (mosquito noise). It is, beyond any doubt, equal to the 983. The addition of features like 24p, 480i over HDMI and a plethora of image adjustments make it a clear winner for DVD playback compared to the 983. Again a lot will depend on your own system and use of the player. The larger and better your display is, the more evident any differences will be.

It turns out that a frighteningly small sample size can give a pretty accurate picture of what the larger population will do. Think about all of those election polls of 1000 interviews. They (more or less) reliably predict what 100,000,000 voters will decide. An EAP of 10 might even have worked for OPPO. So 50/100 is actually a generous sample size.

So who on the EAP has the earliest ETA based upon tracking info? Wondering when the first NDA-free info will hit this thread.

I'm March 5th but I know I'm not first... some others mentioned March 3rd.

"Your" isn't the same as "you're". "There", "their" and "they're" are also not the same. Please learn the difference.

And... it's "couldn't care less". Thank you. :)

Well, the product has shipped, so technically the NDA is no longer applied to the current state of the player. This is why gonk and wmcclain were able to post their review and FAQ, respectively.

Oh.. so I can brag that this player is decoding lossless to LPCM 7.1?

There are more than a handful of [op amps] that sound so good that most designers want to be using them as opposed to discreet transistors. Dave Reich, Theta 2009

Yup! Anything that the EAP owners could find out on their own after their player arrives is fair game to discuss.

There were some questions regarding specific hardware/chipsets used for various tasks. I don't recall exactly... but considering any EAPer can take the cover off and look, perhaps some beta testers would like to save them the trouble and answer those questions now...?

excellent, guys... so refreshing to have the information flowing.

I had suggested a number of questions to add to the so-called FAQ (this is far, far better than a normal FAQ, and seems insulting to refer to it as such). Fer sure I'd like to hear more about SACD playback, about dualdiscs (DVD-A or no), about what expectations are on your AVR regarding display (to prevent confusion, DSD/PCM, etc.) and so on. If I'm feeling ambitious I'll go back and collect some of them and send them to young Bill Mac.

Do tell...

1. Decodes lossless to LPCM (not even the Pioneers can do this yet)
2. When you go to SET UP, it overlays the picture - no need to stop the picture
3. Lightning fast load times.

occilent. Out of curiousity, what's the error it gives if you throw in a DVD-A?

  • It comes with the brand new Spears & Munsil calibration and evaluation disc.
  • You can copy the AVS HD 709 calibration disc onto a USB stick and run it.
  • A negative: the tray is noisier than the 983H, which sounds "cheap".

My hopes for future firmware: more media file container formats and codecs.

ok, I'll stop patting you guys on the back, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that it came with the S&M disc (that sounds, uh, "odd", I admit it...)

Read about it on your faq!

Noisy tray, huh? Still have yet to hear anything about fan noise, now that you mention it...

http://watershade.net/wmcclain/BDP-8...oud-is-the-fan

speaking of, you might want to add the FAQ to your sig, it'll get well travelled to be sure...

Top 3 cats to be let out of the bag:

1) Outstanding speed, even compared to the PS3. Playback navigation (e.g., chapter forward/back) beats the pants off the PS3.

2) Provides proper HDMI 480i output of SD-DVD playback for folks who want to use an external video processor for whatever reason.

3) Full feature set available from day one. No waiting (and waiting, and waiting) for promised "future firmware upgrades" to get those minor little details like DTS-HD MA decoding.

By the way, that Spears & Munsil test and calibration disc is a real treat!

It says a lot that Oppo not only sponsored that disc, but decided to bundle it with every BDP-83.

Yet another reason to keep the EAP small is in the however unlikely case that hardware changes are needed. Oppo said in the terms and conditions of the EAP that they would pay all costs associated with making any required hardware changes. The cost associated with that is manageable for 50 players, but not for a large number. I think most of us would like Oppo to remain profitable, so it's not in our best interest for them to have to pay such costs for thousands of players.

I obviously would have been thrilled if I had been one of the lucky ones to get picked, but it seems clear that we'll all be getting that opportunity in a reasonable amount of time at this point.

My only concern with the process that they used in randomly selecting the 50 is that I would have thought it would have made more sense to survey the interested people and pick a group that would give as diverse a selection of associated equipment as possible to help track down as many HDMI handshaking or other hardware interaction issues as they can before going to production. That probably wouldn't have favored me as I know one of the beta testers has the same surround sound processor that I have.

The only time I remember hearing the fan since early efforts to dial-in the fan controls was when my discharge air temperature probe poked into the fan blades. Even when it runs (which will be rare for most environments), it's very soft-spoken.

Bland,
When using your CIH set-up, are the time elaspsed/remaining OSD's viewable - or do they spill over into the black bar (which is eliminated when you watch 2:35 films)?
