While the following is beyond the scope of this thread/discussion, there are ways to get around JAVA and have a movie only copy of blu-rays without JAVA. Anyhow, hopefully Oppo comes through and has a firmware update to bring the BDP-83 up to date with current blu-ray movies.

Hey Seminole, thanks for sharing your experiences...

Curious -- though I'm glad it did for you -- that your BDP-83 allowed playback of the X-Men Blu-ray; seems the consensus is that the disc won't play for most. I am routinely dumping my persistent storage and I have had BD Live turned OFF in the player since day one, so outside of those factors I don't know what else I can do to "free" or "ease" the player with regard to JAVA-intense issues...

Turning on BD Live can sometimes make an unplayable disc playable. Note that I said "sometimes".

+1. I have two BDP-83s, both with the latest firmware update and BD Live disabled, and the disc wouldn't play in either one of them.

I sent it through USPS with tracking and insurance, UPS is too expensive every time I got quotes from them on other things so I never go back.

I popped in a Blu-Ray of X-Men: Days of Future Past from my local library but my BDP-83 is saying "Wrong disc!"
What the hell does that mean?

Similarly, I was unable to enable subtitles on The Grand Budapest Hotel using the subtitle button on the remote. I received a message saying "Operation blocked by disc" or something to that effect. There were a crazy number of subtitle streams for that disc, yet I could not get a single one to switch on unless it was done from the main menu. Has anyone else encountered this issue?

Also, is there no slow-motion button on the remote? How do I slowly freeze frame through a scene?? And is there any way to disable that annoying bar that comes up on BD discs when you ff or rewind through scenes? It blocks off a significant part of the picture and/or subtitles. Super annoying and makes me want to watch the DVD version instead, if it weren't for the significant decrease in resolution and PQ.

It's been discusses extensively in this thread. We are expecting a fix soon.

I see that from time to time; it's caused by programming on the disc. Use the POPUP MENU control to access the disc's subtitle control.

It's in the manual.

That must be something that comes from java on the disc. The player can't disable it.

Yes. See the section on Region Coding in the FAQ linked from the very first message in this thread. There are several ways to make it region-free for DVD and/or Blu-Ray.

I didn't add details on region-free mods until a later FAQ; I was nervous about the issue when the -83 was new.

But check here for details: Region Free Modifications. This is the -103 FAQ but some of the info still applies.

In short: there is a free software mod for DVDs, but it does not help with Blu-ray.

Blu-ray requires additional hardware. Check the companies at the link to see if they still have -83 gear.

Thanks for the Info guys. Seems it would just be better to buy a region B player from the get go.

I'm curious why you would go that route? Is it the cost of the mod, or the installation? If you already have the BDP-83 the mod would seem to be the way to go.

Cost means nothing. I just don't wanna hack into my BD players or screw something up. I have heard that even buying so called region free players can be a nitmare since many don't play all kinds of dics and warranty's are voided. I need to play a region B BD of SPACE1999 that is coming out.

I do see one place selling a new region free Oppo103 for $629, not sure how well i can trust the company, never heard of it before.

I can only speak about my own experience with the JVB Digital mod and it was a very simple procedure to install and use. The attached images below can give you an idea of what it takes to install.

Installing the mods on Oppo players (I have a modded 83SE and a modded 105) is simple and requires only a screwdriver and 5-10 minutes. Oppo has never refused to do warranty work on a modded player, though they may remove the mod (and return it to you) if it is an internal one. You can easily modify Oppos and should not be fearful of the process.

So easy, even the boss can do it.

Bill, with past experience with OPPO, any way to know when this could come? I experienced the same thing with this X-Men BD, and considering I've experienced other issues with some newer discs, I ordered today a Samsung BD player and was ready to demote the BDP-83 to a CD player. But I might cancel the order if there's really an upcoming firmware update to play this and hopefully other discs. But for $70, it might be worth just keeping the new one anyway.

Either way, anyone know if it's possible to get my Samsung BD USB drive to play through the BDP-83's USB port? That would be pretty slick.

Something is in the oven, but it's hard to say how long it will be before it's released as they obviously want to make sure it's a good fix. With Bluray, it's never a bad idea to have a backup player to (hopefully) play discs that won't play in one player.

No, that won't work. The USB port is only for storage devices.

Good point. And $70 isn't a big deal. I just couldn't justify another ~$500 on an OPPO, as fond as I am of my BDP-83.
