The SE model does not come up for resale very often.
In this case it would take time and patience to find one.

However the reason for the "Special Edition" was for better analog audio quality over the standard version.
If you are going to use analog audio, the SE version may a good choice. It does sound better than the standard version.
Obviously, if you are not going to use analog audio though, then there would be no reason to pay a higher price for the SE version.

Another thing worth noting though, is that within the next series of players from Oppo came the BDP-95,
and the sound quality for analog audio in the -95 trumped the -83SE quite a bit,
and it may be worth obtaining a -95 instead, as long as the price doesn't break the bank.

Then lastly of course, we have the current series of players from Oppo including the BDP-105D.
The features on the -105D really blew away all of the other players from the 8x and 9x series.
However when it comes to pure audio quality from the analog outputs, the -95 and -105 players are nearly identical.

thanks guys for your inputs

well yeah I have lots and lots of SACDs and classical DVD concerts so I'd rather get a SE for that reason, which I will hook up to my old Sansui amplifier.

I already have a 93 that I use only for film material on a projector
I thought of the 95 route but I'm on a budget atm, they seem to be still very valuable

I don't think I ever seen one popping up in here, nor on most forums
There have been a few available on Ebay for a while now but they are either multi-region (something I could do myself) or nuforce modded, at ridiculously high prices.
All I need is a "plain" 83SE
Any 83SE can quickly be refurbed by Oppo for very little cost. There's a good argument for buying one dirt cheap that needs work and sending it in. That invariably winds up costing less than paying a premium for a pristine one.

That said, its also true that much of what was developed for the 83SE got incorporated into the 93 and 103 models. In terms of analog audio quality, the main advantage of the 83SE is the dedicated stereo output. (which will sound a tad better than the 93 or 103's m-ch outs)

wow, I really didn't know that. Thank you
so you are saying they will replace all the components (DACs, connectors, caps, etc..) on a normal 83 and make it 83SE?

I might send Oppo a message, though if not wrong they don't directly deal with people from abroad anymore since 2009 or so and I doubt the Euro shop would perform the mod

Edit:
Thanks Bob
Yeah, I definitely misunderstood. Have to improve my reading abilities

No, he is not saying that. He's saying if you buy a broken 83SE, OPPO will fix it at a reasonable flat rate.

Well, turns out it was all legit! I had to drive pretty deep in the country, but the people were really cool and either just had no clue what this was or didnt really care. They did not look like home theater enthusiasts. They just said they got a new xbox that plays dvd's and didnt need this.
Man I still cant believe this actually worked out! Here are pics next to my Panny to show how small that damn thing is. Plays good, but its tiny

That is only one of the reasons why I will never buy another Panasonic Blu-ray player for the rest of my life, and stick with Oppo instead.
...Samsung and Sony would be next, in that order.

I hate Samsung as a company, so I wont support them anymore. It was between the Panny and Sony at the time, but coming from a PS3, I didnt care for the layout much and used it with my Panny panel at the time so I wanted it to match. THen realized it wouldnt stream like ANY format and got the sh!ts of it and used it just as a disc player. Does good, but that one disc gives me fits all the time at the same place. The on screen menu is hideous too!
I cant believe how much nicer the OPPO layout is even for it being from like 2009 I presume?

That's about how long I've had mine. No desire to update and never had a bit of trouble with it.

This thread was launched in February, 2009. So Early Adopters had they player that month. (Beta testers, earlier.)

The Early Adopter program ended in April, and the first general release firmware was issued in May.

The June 30, 2009, date was when the player first became available on Amazon, i.e., sometime after OPPO Digital started selling the player on their own web store page.

Archaeologists will find all this in the first few posts of this massive thread -- hidden behind "spoiler" tags and dire warnings about the curse that comes with breaking the seal.

It looks like the Oppo is in great condition. You got yourself a heck of a deal there for $30. Did they happen to have the original box and owner's manual too? (yes, I'm getting greedy)

I didn't ask about the box and manual. I didn't want to seem crazy for their $30 player. Lol
I did ask in an email if they got it new or used, but she never answered. I didn't want to ask too many details and have them decide to research more. I mean she did give me an Amazon link to it when I asked the model number originally, so she at least knew how much they were new. Maybe assumed due to age. No longer relevant?

You can get packing from Oppo if you want. Or, if you send it in for service they will send it back in original packing.

This firmware only address the Wrong Disc error message on some Blu-ray titles. Otherwise, there are no other changes, so the current capabilities that you are enjoying, the same limitations that may annoy you, still apply to this firmware release.

Best Regards,
Customer Service
OPPO Digital, Inc.

I also verified this personally. Nothing seem to have changed regarding the playback of various formats and medias.
As far as SACD-R compatibility goes, the last firmware that supported that was BDP83-59-0117 from March 2012. All subsequent versions dropped support for SACD .iso files burned onto recordable DVD media. So, what Oppo says is true, the same media limitations that may annoy you would still be present. If you never played SACD-R discs then you won't miss anything. Commercial SACD discs are not affected.

Sorry, I don't understand what you are trying to say . Firmware BDP83-60-1110 (the latest one for BDP83) still plays SACD-R discs without problems. I tried that myself after the update. And with SACD-R I mean SACD iso images burned on dvd-r or dvd+r media.

Well, here is the update on my BDP-83. After all I've gone through it finally arrived Saturday afternoon and couldn't be happier. Unit runs and looks completely new, so far not a problem one. Watched American Sniper yesterday never froze or skipped a beat one. Glad to finally see that there are still companies that stand behind their product.

I will bet you I confused it with the BDP-93 player (which did have unofficial SACD-R support withdrawn) because there weren't any subsequent firmware upgrades for the BDP-83 after March 2012 until the November 2014 one you mentioned. Thanks for the correction and apologies for the confusion!
