I posted this on the Oppo 981HD thread, but thought it was also relevant here.
I was not part of the "Fortunate Fifty", but hope to be a part of the "Humble Hundred".

Here's a question for the experts.
When using the analog outs for SACD and DVD-A, the speaker sizes are set to small on the Oppo to allow for proper bass management within the player. When I watch movies, I switch to the HDMI connection to bitstream DD and DTS to my Denon 988 for decoding and processing. When using HDMI, the manual recommends setting all speakers to Large. My question is: "Do I have to change my speaker size settings in the Oppo every time I change from Analog to HDMI? I'm guessing no, as the bass management settings within the player would have no affect on bitstreams, but a little validation from an expert or two will make me feel better :-)

As to why I don't use HDMI for audio formats such as HDCD, SACD and DVD-A, the annoying HDCP handshaking issue causes the first half second of songs to be clipped on all HDCDs and some SACDs. I'd rather use the DACS of my receiver to listen to Hi Res Audio, but that half second clipping on the HDMI connection has become too annoying. Hopefully, the soon to be released BD-83 will not have this same handshake issue.

In anticipation of getting the 83, I contacted OPPO and was advised that when using the analogue outputs for SACD to set the player's Speaker settings to large to allow my processor to do the management.

Hope this helps.

Thanks SnellKrell, but my Denon does not do processing and bass management on the analog ins. All Room EQ and bass management is done on HDMI digital signals only. I would need to set the proper speaker sizes on the Oppo for proper bass management using the analogs. Setting all speakers to large would not send bass to the sub on 2 channel content.

The speaker setup in the -93 does not affect any digital outputs. This is detailed in the manual.

You will also find that the issue of truncated audio tracks is absent from the -83. Playback of CD/SACD and audio files is seamless. Sometimes the 1st song on a disc will be truncated a bit, but turning off the auto playback function and manually starting playback will help this.

is there anybody there can try to compare decoding from the Oppo 83 against decoding in the reciever.in denmark there has ben a shootout .7 players against a donon 3808.
not to of the players had the same sound when decoding.but bitstreeam there was no diference.eks the denon bdp 3800 was not at god decoding as the receiver.the nad bd player and the new pio lx 91 had better decoding than the reciever.celine dion concert was the material used.
ps 3 was not as god as the reciever.the big looser was pana bdp 50.it was like carpert over the speakers.!10 liseners was a the location.
i am sorry for my bad english

I just checked the list and there are only 38 people on it.
I wonder when the e-mails will go out to try to fill the list?
Monday morning?
Or maybe they have already been sent and we won't know until Monday maybe?

Are any of you fine beta testers udsing this unit with a Lexicon MC-12B non HDMI version pre/pro? What internal settings are you using in the BDP-83 for playback through the Lexicons analog in connections?

I have a section for this in the FAQ but no content yet. (I'm the wrong person to ask about audio).

I'll probably just link to reviews when they start appearing.

I did canvas the beta testers but mostly got audiophile jokes in response:

I was also warned:

rofl. I'm leaning towards picking it up, just have to get the final approval from my wife before I order this morning. I can comment... just appreciate reading a couple comments before taking the plunge.

After an entire day of work that had me out of the office and a night away from the PC last night, I missed a lot of activity in this thread!

Matt

There is a setting in the video menu to enable 24p output. If you leave that to "off" (the default), it will output 1080p24 sources as 1008p60.

Does the Harmony Database have the alternate remote codes or do you have to manually add the alternate commands by teaching the 'new codes' ??

I currently own a 983 and have no plans on getting rid of it, I also plan on buying the BD83 so don't want both players switching on at the same time

I understand the BD83 has an alternate remote code switch on the remote ? but how would these codes be implemented on a universal remote ?

I have both a 983H and a BDP-83 in my system and am using a URC MX-900 (there is a file for the MX-900 in my review in case other MX-900 users are interested). I have my BDP-83 set to code set 2 and learned those codes into my remote. Someone will need to learn the set 2 and set 3 codes to Harmony's database - maybe you can be the one to start that!

The BDP-83's speaker settings affect the analog output only, so you can leave them to "small" and still use the HDMI output without having bass management applied to the HDMI connection.

So true. Thankfully, it does sound like they have a 90% ready product and there certainly is a hungry public for it! Why not get a leg up on Pioneer and Panasonic?

Although I have never understood why they let you turn off the display but leave other lights on. Especially when often the other lights are much brighter than the display.

I have my equipment set up exactly like you do Charles.

Have you tried turning all the lights and projector off, and turning on one of your components? Yes, one tiny little LED can shoot enough light onto my screen that I can do hand puppets!

When I sent Oppo an e-mail a few days ago whining about Alaska being excluded from the EAP, they sent me back an e-mail stating that if all goes well, I'll be able to purchase one in March. Late March, I'm guessing.

Have not read all the threads but in what I read there is no mention of the conversion rate when converting to PCM from DSD using HDMI. The older Oppos did it at 24/88. Does anyone know what rate this player converts? 24/192 would be best.

Received my BDP-83 yesterday (Friday) around noon PST and spent most of last night testing it. All I want to say right now is that both the Blu Ray and SD picture quality is superb. It matches and exceeds everything I have seen so far including the $2200.00 Pioneer Elite 09FD. The sound quality is superb as well. It is a well built and handsome player.

Having said that, there are issues that need to be addressed before this player should be formally released. I am glad Oppo did not do a full release at this time. There are operational issues that need to be fixed.

In fairness to Oppo I am not going to list the issues here, but I intend to contact Oppo next week and share with them what I am experiencing.

There is not doubt in my mind that when the bugs are fixed, this will be the finest Blu Ray/ SD player within $$ reach of us mere mortals, and will represent a new standard for this medium.

This is exactly what I think OPPO is hoping to get from the EAP crew. Glad to hear that you are going to be sending them this sort of feedback.
