Both decks will also support Sony's Precision Drive Technology, which helps stabilize warped or scratched discs during playback, as well as Sony's Precision Cinema HD Upscale technology to upconvert standard definition media to near-HD quality.

The Sony BDP-S560 will benefit by gaining WiFi capabilities, a first for a Sony standalone player. It will be able to connect wirelessly to most (A/B/G/N) wireless networks, as well as feature WiFi Protected Set-up and DLNA connection software for easy connection and interface with home routers and other DLNA devices.

Both players will be available in May, the BDP-S360 for $300 and the BDP-S560 for $350.

Interesting, but it does not say anything about playing mkv, SACD, DVD-A, or streaming content. It's nice that it has WIFI though, but I won a gaming router at CES09 from NetGear (so I don't need that anymore). My money will still go whoever is first out of the gate between the Oppo BDP-83 or Panasonic DMP-80K.

My set-up will maintain the 981(as well as a PS3) until the feature that shall remain nameless becomes available on the BD83. I will probably keep the 981 even after that time comes. I am mostly looking forward to the 83 so that I can compare DSD vs PCM on my vast collection of SACDs.

Really, stop referring to it as the "feature that shall remain nameless" or "feature which cannont be spoken". You are just inviting people to ask what that feature is. Call a spade a spade.

Talk about Region Restrictions has been prohibited, even if you are being coy about it. The unit is region locked for DVD and BD. This is non-negotiable.

"We've asked in previous posts to drop the discussion concerning region free status for this player. It is not, nor going to be available as a region free player via OPPO. Please drop this topic."

Please head the moderators request.

All firmware information is listed on the first post.

In terms of what they mean, Main is the decoder, Loader is the actual servo (laser head and drive mechanism) and Sub is the micro-controller which controls the fan.

I thought the "feature that shall remain nameless" was jokingly referring to DVD-A support. I actually could care less about region coding. Sorry to all offended parties, both past and future.

DVD-Audio is a confirmed feature which just needs a firmware upgrade. It is anticipated to be enabled through firmware before the official BDP-83 release.

Because it has not yet been introduced into the player, it is not advertised by OPPO or featured in the Preliminary Specifications and Features.

You can read the Locked thread about the 83 by scrolling down a few pages or searching for it. There's a full description about why the BluRay consortium does not allow region free playback, and it was asked within that thread to drop the discussion of it.

I am always doing comparison testing or checking functions or features raised on the forums.

I've already retired the OPDV971H and the DV-981HD as they are no longer useful for my purposes, however:

The DV-980H is a good transport for audio and video to my receiver (Integra DTC-9.8) and video processor (VP50).

The DV-983H is my test bed for de-interlacing and scaling performance.

The Sony BDP-S560 at $350.00 msrp??? I already own players for DVD-a and SACD. For that price, I'll wait for the Sony. Wi-Fi, too? One less cable!

Note: I do not own an external VP other than the 9.8.

Questions on where it is best to post will likely be answered by the AVS Moderators if asked in the "Forum Operations Center" forum here.

As far as I can tell, there isn't a forum on AVS specific to the licensing practices of the Blu-Ray Disc Association, nor in particular how those licensing practices restrict all manufacturers of Blu-Ray players (not just Oppo) as to what they can offer for playback of SD-DVD discs on licensed Blu-Ray players.

It may be a topic AVS prefers you take elsewhere altogether, as for example their general prohibition against discussions related to bypassing copy protection systems.

In any event, the Moderators have made it clear they don't want the threads related to this new Oppo player to become the home for such discussions -- much as folks might wish Oppo would be the company to break this restriction.

The makers of Blu-Ray players are bound by different licenses and restrictions than the makers of SD-DVD players. Perhaps AVS can get a forum going in the Industry area where this can be discussed, perhaps even with response from BDA.

But as far as this thread is concerned, the topic is off limits if for no other reason than that it is pointless. Offering Region Free SD-DVD playback on the BDP-83 is not Oppo's decision to make.

Neuromancer -
Can I ask you to comment on this? As an owner of a video processor (RadianceXD) and also the owner of a 980H - I had planed on retiring the 980H as a transport for 480i material over HDMI (my SDI player crapped out on me about a month ago and the Radiance doesn't have a reasonable SDI solution right now) given that the 83 has a source direct mode that will allow 480i over HDMI - have you seen a something in the 83 that would preclude you from using it as a DVD 480i solution? Is there something else that the 980 is preserving that you don't see the 83 offering - either now or eventually?

Just to clarify, and because I'm feeling off-topic today:

Region coding has nothing whatsoever to do with copy protection. It's about distribution rights.

Now back to regularly scheduled off-topic discussions.

And why can't we have HD-DVD support????

Yes, I just mentioned bypassing copy protection as an example of another type of discussion that is prohibited here on AVS.

Thanks for the quick reply. Can I ask why you are hanging onto the 980? Or maybe a better question - once the 83 has a fully implemented feature set - do you see any reasons to hold onto the 980?

There is no reason to hold onto the DV-980H unless you are paranoid about your fancy new BDP-83 breaking down prematurely due to a lot of use.

I hold on to the DV-980H because it is my primary 480i source. It is my control for testing and confirming issues related to improper transportation or processing which is occurring on the BDP-83.

Got it! Thanks -
I actually am the owner of two 980's I liked them so much - but had intended on selling the one in my theater because the 83 seemed like everything I was looking for in a player - and it would yield one less "box" in my set up (always a plus ). Seems like I'll still be heading that direction -

What's wrong with "a stack of Oppo players looks cool" as a reason?

I sold my 983 and kept the 980.

Thanks Bob for a very detailed explaination of the policy against code free discussion relating to this player.

Just to be clear:

We don't want discussion relating to code free playback for Blu Ray discs OR standard definition discs either.

We don't care to know that you are disappointed and this is the reason you won't buy the player. This is a played out topic. Discussing it will not change the outcome.

If there are member's that continue to bring up the topic after being asked not to do so, you may find yourself banned from posting in this thread. Sorry, but that would seem to be the only way to stop some folks that can't or won't move on.
