Interesting article . . . .applicable to the BDP-83 also

0dBFS & Bass Management of DVD / Blu-ray Players (Audioholics) 2/11/10

We've recently bench tested the HDMI and analog outputs of several Blu-ray players (aka. BD players) and noticed some interesting results. Apparently not all DVD/BD source devices handle 0dBFS in a similar matter. Before continuing, it's important to identify what 0dBFS means. We have written several articles on this topic which can be seen here:
When we initially tested the Oppo BDP-83SE we concluded that it could not properly handle 0dBFS input signals since it was distorting the summed subwoofer output with all speakers set to "small". This wasn’t entirely accurate as we will explain with the mathematics after we first identify how bass management works in most DVD/BD players players.

Hi guys,
Does anyone know if the AIX Audio Calibration Disc/HD Muisc Sampler still comes with the Oppo 83, or if that was a limited time deal? The AIX page still mentions it coming with the Oppo, but Oppos page does not mention it (that I can see anyway).

Just curious as it would be a nice bonus. I have a couple AIX DVD-As yet from when I was using my old Denon and I enjoyed them quite a bit. A new one including some calibration would be awesome.

Thanks,
Chris

Yes, the BDP-83 and BDP-83SE both come with the AIX audio and S&M video calibration discs packed in the box with the player.

Anyone else have trouble playing the movie Gamer? My 83 spins up to max speed and then afer a few minutes displays unknown disc. I tried cleaning the disc but it made no difference. I did not have any trouble playing it in my PS3.

Gamer played fine for me on the 83. I have had it about two weeks. The only difference it seemed to take a bit longer to load, than any other disc I have played on it . Also I received the aix and s and m Withe my 83 from amazon.

All your display's processing is done in 4:4:4 AFAIK, then converted to RGB for the actual display. Processing includes all picture adjustments and any other settings that exist. There's no real reason why you should see any difference, but displays do vary and some may well be processing in 4:2:2. the thinking is that it's better to avoid unnecessary conversions. But most TVs should handle conversions well. Consult the AVS thread for your specific display for details on that.

FWIW, "auto" should result in 4:4:4 being sent.

Yes, auto does set to 4:4:4.

With my OCD running amok , I called Oppo, explained my question, and the bottom line is that they said that if my display will accept 4:2:2 it's best to use that setting, as "that will actually result in the least amount of color space conversion." I still can't see a difference, but WTF, at least I can sleep at night now

Thanks again rd

Yes, BDLive and the firmware notification are two different things.
You can still get notifications of new fw while keeping BDLive turned off.

DLNA streaming may be stop functioning if BD-LIVE is disabled, though. Have not tested that in a while.

Took a look at the first article "linked", and noted this:

"This article focuses on the analog outputs of BD players and how they deal with 0dBFS input levels from program material."

I would therefore assume this does not apply to an all HDMI system, I don't use the analog outputs, and I let my Onkyo 906 AVR do the bass management. I know there are a lot of fans that do use the analog outputs on the Oppo-83, so the article is an important read, as it always seems a complicated issue.

Not sure if it's on the shelves yet, but Barnes & Noble and Borders in Burlington would have it. I'll probably grab a copy myself.

Yeah, I called there earlier today and both said they didn't have it (B&N claimed they never carry it, but I'm sure I've seen it there).

I'll have to go in person over the weekend.

Glad to hear that. I have a collection of DVD-A disks that I like and it would be a big disappointment if they did not play. My old Technics DVD A-10 does not play these disks. Not even DVD layer. It does pay regular DVDs and CDs with no problems. I am still torn between regular 83 and 83SE. Would Sabre DACs provide better sount quality vs. DACs in SR8002?

If the rest of your system is of the quality to allow you to hear the increase in quality. . YES.

The ESS SABRE32 chipset is pretty good compared to reciever DACs.

Awww, crap. Now, I'll probably have to run up to B&N and grab an issue. I haven't read that pub, since I cancelled my subscription several years ago (sorry Kal, no disrespect to you).

I swear, if I see one ad for a cable riser, esoteric power cord or $5000 speaker wires - I am gong to set it on fire, though

It might be best if I just tear out the article on the -83 and leave the rest of the magazine on the shelf.

Don't start on me... we've been ripping wall paper down all day and she made me go look at the french doors and windows you got her all lathered up over tonight. Gotta have you back over soon for more consultation, I think the "serious demolition" is imminent.

Hello Folks!

I´ve got a stupid sounding question for you: What exactly is the "Loader" on the BDP-83? Is it the entire drive bay? Is it the mechanical parts of the disc tray? Is it simply the hardware (chips, mechanical wheels & rails) to control the lasers reading of discs???
