Insane. Mine stopped played the new Pirates Of the Carribean blu ray at the 1:15 mark. The player started making a lot of grinding and clicking noises and just eventually froze. Unblievable.

I've installed 9 firmware updates (the latest being ver. 218) since I bought this player a couple of years ago and I just can't fathom the ineptitude of the people involved working on them

I found that more often than not it is the contantly changing encryption on the Blu-ray discs themselves, especially Fox & Universal, that causes the issues.
I have 2 1590 models which are the same as 1600, one from Costco and one from Wal-mart. I returned the Costco one last week after 18 months of use as it actually broke, eject button turned off the unit !!

I started watching Star Wars without a problem, but after a few minutes into the movie, the video freezes, machine starts to make noise and then no more movie. If I turn off, turn on and resume, I can go back to watching without a problem for a few more minutes and then it all happens again. This reminds of Avatar when it first came out. Anybody else having problems watching Star Wars with their BD-P1600?
Chere's Avatar Chere 10:01 PM 11-21-2011
^^^^ That is exactly what happened to me while playing the new Pirates Of The Carribean BD. So I guess it's not just limited to Disney then
MarkEHansen's Avatar MarkEHansen 07:01 AM 11-22-2011
Do you mean the original Star Wars movies (IV, V and VI)?

I just went through those on my BD-P1600 and they ran without any problems.
I am running firmware 2.16, which I installed when I was having problems running the Rango BD - problems similar to what you describe.

I just updated to firmware 2.18 yesterday without a hitch. This player has worked with every bluray I own except "Kickass"...

That is good news, I have 2.18 down but not yet installed...

Can you both test your sets (firm. ver. 218) with the new Pirates Of The Carribean BD and report back the results? You can pick up a copy at Redbox and hopefully your mileage will be much better than mine.

Thx!

I updated the 1600 for the first time since 2009 to latest f/w with trepadation after reading about the issues some folks have had.

All seems fine with regard to BD playback, but then again i have only tried one disc

Can anyone tell me how to get this player to playback mkv files? I have a file that i tried to link to the player via an internal hdd inside a caddy and under the 'video' tab, nothing comes up and player says 'no programme found'.

Thanks

Sent mine to Samsung to fix the BR disc issuue. Tried to tell me that it was not firmware related and I went to the Executive Customer Resolution Team who got it fixed for free. I received it back this past Friday and everything seems to be working great. Plays all discs fine.

Anyone know the answer to the above question please?

Search this thread. It was some time ago, but I recall seeing several posts where someone talked about getting these file types to work.

Good luck.

Our BD-P1600 will play 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2' with no problem, but Part 1 is unplayable due to freezing in Scene 6 and in some other places. Running firmware version 2.18, both discs brand new. Have checked disc and have also cleaned it with isopropyl alcohol even though it looks perfect... no help. (The standard DVD of Part 1 included with the Blu-Ray version plays perfectly on this player.)

Any thoughts?

I just updated my 3 BD-P1600s from the web. The first updated flawlessly, the second got hung saying "NET-UP". The screen looked like the normal startup with the menu selections across the bottom but non of the buttons worked. After about 15 minutes of waiting i finally cycled the power thinking it was already bricked. After cycling the power it worked and when I checked the firmware version was up to date. The third player did the same as the second so I cycled the power after about 15 minutes. It powers back up, I get the blue screen but no menu selections.. Is it bricked?... Any ideas of is this just a nice looking black box now... Please help...

Anyone tried 2.19 yet? Just released 1/5/12 on the Samsung website.

Here we go, back to Samsung for yet another file for the archive...

Hey, I just stumbled across the forum looking for the solution to my issues. I've had problems playing Blu Rays since the last update. Specifically Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows II and, most recently, Thor.

I bit the bullet for the team and downloaded and installed firmware v. 2.19. Man, what a mistake. I could play about an hour of a movie before it started glitching, and now it's much less.

Really a shame. I've always liked Samsung products.
dxjnorto's Avatar dxjnorto 11:13 AM 01-08-2012
Well it's an old player in product cycle years. Software is practically obsolete in three years and hardware not much longer. It's what I'm still using too, so thanks for taking the bullet. A new Blu-ray is only a hundred bucks now. Better to bite the bullet again and purchase a new machine perhaps.

Anybody else got a different story to tell?
zollars's Avatar zollars 01:19 PM 01-08-2012
I've had it a little over 2 years, buying a new one every year or two isn't an option for me. I have a VCR from 1994 that's still running fine, there's no reason a BluRay shouldn't run for years. It worked fine until they upgraded the firmware.

A friend has a first gen PS3 he purchased in 2006 that still runs BluRays just fine. This is completely unacceptable.

Did you try a hard reboot? I bought 2 Samsungs (1600 & 3600) because they were on sale. Picture has been fine since I resolved that you need to set the audio to PCM. If set to Bitstream, the sound keeps going out of sync, on both units. Not sure I'd buy a Samsung blu-ray player again.
Al Sherwood's Avatar Al Sherwood 09:20 AM 01-09-2012
Heck I just picked up a Toshiba BD player for $44 (second room), but price is not the issue IMHO...

If there wasn't all of the extra stuff in the way, BD Live, interactive this and that, or you could just turn it all off but "play the movie" things would likely be fine.

You know that is why I buy the disc, so I can watch the movie, the rest is just annoying fluff!
Talking Rain's Avatar Talking Rain 01:20 PM 01-10-2012
Just did the 2.19 firmware update on two of my BD-P1600's. Went ok, the third is still bricked from the last update. Anyone know how to reset my third unit or is it truly useless? After the last update, when turned on it just displays the blue screen with no menu and the players display says load. Any help would be appreciated, I'd hate to just through it away....

PS; Tried suggested hard re-boot by holding the power button till it shut off. When it's turned back on it's the same as above...
Talking Rain's Avatar Talking Rain 02:07 PM 01-10-2012
Just reading the manual, page 80 says holding down the skip forward button for more than 5 seconds resets all aspects of the player... WIll try it and update when in front of bricked unit.
zollars's Avatar zollars 02:44 PM 01-10-2012
Unfortunately, I can only do "the fluff". Playing the movie doesn't work. I called support, they basically shrugged it off. Said it would be fixed in a future update.

Don't hold your breath.

I've been anti-Sony for years because of their obsession with proprietary tech, but now it looks like Sammy is going on my s#$t list for their refusal to update their products. They've got a horrible record with updating their Android phones. I'm afraid this is just a sign of what's to come.

Maybe I'll just go back to my Pioneer DVD and forget about BluRay? LOL

Would you prefer no blu-ray, or that the units be prices back to $1000 each?

Everybody's had a different experience. I had a Sharp "carousel" microwave that lasted a little over a year and the "carousel" motor quit. Didn't Sharp invent the "carousel"? Looking at the reviews I knew that was a weakness, but I bought it anyway thinking that by then Sharp would have seen the weakness and re-engineered it. No such luck. I think they are still available. Yup — Sharp R-930.

The door also began to fall off so that when you punched the door opener button, you had to pry the door open with your fingers. The thing cost more than three hundred dollars because it was also a convection oven. You could put a ham or small turkey in it when it worked. But they didn't bother to strengthen the parts so that it would be a good unit. Sharp never responded to any of my inquiries from their customer service links. DON'T buy one.

I've had fairly good luck with Samsung.
cgking114's Avatar cgking114 04:46 AM 01-13-2012
For those having trouble playing Blu-Rays since last years update, don't count on a firmware update to fix. You are probably going to have to send to Samsung for service. They will most likely try to charge you, but stick to your guns and maybe they will sent you up to their customer resolution team, who helped me.
SickDrift's Avatar SickDrift 03:04 PM 01-22-2012
Well, after almost two years, our BD-P1600 has finally bricked.

Last night my wife was prompted to update the unit, so we did so as usual. It took unusually long, but finally was completed, and turned itself off. After it turned on we found we couldn't use our Netflix account, so we gave up trying, figuring we had gotten another bad update. So we then tried to watch our Blu-Ray of North-by-Northwest, which wouldn't load at all. So now I was worried. I then tried to access the units Menu, which would not come up, thats when I noticed the units "Load" message stuck on the front display.

Today I contacted Samsung support via chat and was informed that they would be "willing" to do a one time free repair, if it was found that the update caused the problem. I am skeptical, but at least glad they are offering to do it for free. Hopefully they do what they have promised.

So, everyone who is having a problem, let them know, hopefully they will make you the same offer they did us.

I will try to update this post when this issue has reached it's end.

Sounds like my experience with Sony: one TV, 2 portable CD players, wireless phone, reel-to-reel tape deck, etc., etc.

I wouldn't buy another Sony product if it sold for 1/10th of the competition's price. If I won one, I'd put it on Ebay.
