i must sadly report that my BD60 has started to do the freee-act after i updated FW to 2.4
Owned it since it came out..that's like 2 yrs almost without any freeze, so it seems too much of a coincidence that this started only after going to 2.4.
It's a bummer, but also an excuse to get the BD65 with Netflix streaming...so I have mixed feelings about it..

Has anyone experienced this after going to a FW update?

Hi Gingus!

I just upgraded my BD60 to version 2.5 as well. BUT now I can no longer hear any picture in picture or button sounds. Even when they're selected. I haven't had this problem with version 2.4 and haven't changed any sound settings either. Do you (or anyone else) have the same problem? I tried both a Universal Picture blu ray with PIP as well as a Warner Bros. disc.

Would be great to hear from other BD60 owners who just upgraded to 2.5!

My Pana BD80 has a setting in the HDMI menu called "HDMI RGB Output Range". I've done searches on this and found things referring to analog outputs (using a full RGB 0-255 levels instead of the "legal" video range), but not in HDMI. The manual, in a total lack of technical explanation, says the two settings mean: "Standard- Video is output as it is" and "Enhanced- When the black and white contrast of a video is low, the signal is enhanced to reproduce clear video". Now, in my broadcast engineer's mind, this wording makes it sound like magic. Although Standard sounds better, I would rather read what this actually does. Does anyone know?

I was watching LOTR #1. last night and the PIP worked just fine.

0-255 (255 may be "special") is a valid range for video signals, it just depends what values are set for "black" and "reference white". In the PC world 0 is black and 255 (or 254) is reference white. Studio RGB levels - the levels used for 99.99% of video you buy on disc - use 16 for black and 235 for reference white. Excursions to either side of the boundaries are allowed and do occur.

I'm guessing the "enhanced" setting uses PC video levels. So when you play a disc black "16" is mapped down to 0 and reference white (235) is mapped up to 255. Values in between are non-linearly mapped accordingly. You don't want to use this setting unless your display only accepts PC video levels.

Note: some players have a "IRE" setting to switch between 0 and 7.5 IRE for black. IRE is only valid for analog video output, but sometimes when used for digital output will switch between PC and studio levels.

i also updated to 2.5 via internet.
I could not pass up the $88 deal at HHGregg's with free shipping for the BD-65, so I grabbed one yesterday. (Needed Netflix streaming anyway). Now if the BD 60 continues well with FW2.5 that's great, if not I will have the BD65 anyway...

Had the same experience.

With firmware 2.5 (updated 3 days ago) have not had a single freeze with the same BD movies or any other.

Also, with 2.4 and Amazon VOD (Eureka season 1 & 3) sometimes it took awhile to load with a lot of times not even playing. Plus, during the movie the sound would just shut down and I had to replay with mixed results. Now, the speed of loading has increased dramatically, always playing the first time and no sound problems during playing.

If 2.5 continues to give me this performance, I will not update the firmware unless it offers substantial benefits.

Glad to hear that.

I might be purchasing the 65 also. I want Netflix.

Yep that's the reason I got it, too, we already have a regular Netflic account, and I want to get streaming Netflix...I need to upgrade the DSL connection to a higher speed though... 3 mbps isn't gonna cut it for HD Netflix

...too bad you missed the $88 shipped BD 65 deal from HHGregg. It sold out within one night, I think. I just barely got to order...
Still, I am sure there will be many good deals there for the 65; If you buy from amazon, I would only get it if it's really "sold and shipped by amazon". I wouldn't trust any 3rd party amazon sellers like 6th ave. electronics, etc.

A few months ago, I updated to 2.4 after which Avatar BR would no longer play. After a few calls to Panasonic tech support, I had to send the BD60 to Texas (apparently if you are directed to send it to TX, it is replaced) and it was replaced with a BD605 that works just fine, so far. One of the suggestions by the tech was not to do a firmware update if the player is functioning normally with no problems. This was scoffed at by some but turns out to be true. For me to do a firmware update, there has to be a pressing reason as in something not functioning correctly. Hence, I don't even bother with firmware updates anymore. So no interest at all in firmware 2.5.

For your particular situation, you should call up Panasonic tech support.

Thanks for your help fookoo_2010. I will contact the tech support then. Since bd 60 does not support netflix, I want to purchase a set top box. Is the new apple tv a good choice?Any other good alternatives?

More details ? What happens when you press Functions and select Network ?

My upgrade did not alter any Network Settings but i would recommend checking them under Setup. Also check all of your network cables and equipment (router, switches, hubs, wireless adapter if used) ?

If all looks OK I would reboot my cable or DSL modem and router. Power up the BD60 and try again.

I hope I'm posting in the right place. I could really use some help with my BD60.

We got a multi-region BD60 recently and only tonight hooked it up to our home network (via ethernet connection). Our goal was to set it up for Amazon VOD use.

We promptly updated the firmware to v2.5 without problems.

We then went to the Vieracast channels and there was no Amazon channel.

Spouse noticed that all the titles were in German, so we checked our country settings and our country was set to "Germany". Here's the problem---in the country settings menu, ALL of the country choices are European. We have no way to set it to USA (or Mexico, or Japan, I suppose).

I'm presuming that since Amazon VOD requires you to be in the US, we're not getting the Amazon channel to show up because our player thinks it's in Germany?

Help?

Where did you buy the MR player? Looks like you didn't get a US model that is altered for multi region playback, but got a complete europen model.

Can you contact the shop and ask them for advice? I don't think Panasonic will stand behind any multi-region players as they don't sell any in the US.

Interesting that the old DMP-BD70V was included in the official Panasonic NetFlix support announcement, but we are still excluded.

So back in 2008-2009 ... the BD70v got special or more powerfull graphics processing hardware? Ya, right

That announcement has to be incorrect. I have both a BD60 and a BD70 and they use the same firmware.

The protection on the Avatar BD is suppose to be different/new version/extreme ... but it's disappointing to see that Panasonic can't seem to be able to keep up.

... and it wasn't the BD disc itself because you used the same one.

No I was lazy and left off the "V". If you had followed the link I supplied to the firmware update, you would have seen that.

Yes, I eventually followed the link and saw that... Didn't mean to annoy you.

So that's one of the places we can download them, huh? I just get it over ethernet.

I'm wondering if ... since there is no 2010 replacement for the BD70v, it's still a current 2010 model and getting the NetFlix update. I suppose its also possible that there are some slightly newer revision BD70v that have a newer motherboard. I guess we will just have to wait and see. If it ever shows up on yours, please let us know.

Some of these posts amaze me. They go like this:

I just survived the firmware x.x update.

Do people have a firmware update fetish?

Can someone please post something they gained from the updates?

Thanks,

John
