It wouldn't surprise me if the MPAA paid Momitsu to cease production.

Yep, the momitsu bdp-899 model is end of life. replaced by the bdp-799 model which is also a region free blu-ray player. also much smaller foot-print

Has anyone successfully updated the firmware on their 899? I downloaded the files from the Momitsu site and tried updating the player via both CD and USB key, but the player didn't recognize any of the files.

Don't tug on that, you never know what it might be attached to...

I had an order for the 899 backordered with HK Flix for about a month until it was canceled (apparently they are no longer selling any hardware through their website).

I can't find an 899 anywhere else for sale online, but would settle for a 799 as long as it has a digital audio out with HDMI (since my receiver doesn't have any HDMI inputs).

I found the Blu-ray region codes for the 799 very easily, but what I want to know is, does the 799 play all PAL DVDs out of the box (regardless of region) or does it require a remote hack or a hardware mod in order to do so?

My 899, original firmware, had audio problems with Bad Lieutenant Port Of Call New Orleans. It had a sound dropout in the film's opening that bugged me. Then it did fine for about 90 minutes. From that point on till the end there were sporadic dropouts. My Panny 30 played the last 30 minutes just fine.

I still don't understand why this player doesn't give automatic notification of new firmware updates.

Oh, well, when and if it dies, I'll get the OPPO and apply the region-free firmware hack.

It doesn work anymore, or, rather the hack is from a year ago and many functions have beeen updated since including disc compatibility with new security schemes (thanks Fox), so if you use that firmware youll miss out on playing some discs and all the cool new network play ack dlna deatures etc. In fact rumor says the current shipping firmware is too advanced to even roll back to that old hacked firmware.

BUT

There is a great hardware mod available from a vendor in Denmark that lets you stay current with firmware etc. See the Oppo thread for details.

Oh, darn, but I did wonder how that would work when new firmware updates for the oppo came along and whatnot. Well, I guess I'll just have to get a 799 if the 899 dies.

The hardware mod works great, and you get the best DVD upconversion available, in the Oppo.

I never watch DVDs so DVD upconversion isn't even an issue for me.

It's been reported that the region-hack does not work with this new update.

OMG, I dodged a bullet! I tried to apply the firmware update a few times, but for whatever reason, it wouldn't take on my machine. Phew! *wipes brow*

My player might be dying at least as a BD player...? It refused to play Cedar Rapids, "A", and then it wouldn't play The Cruel Sea, Wee-jun B, BD. It loaded both and frooze. On The Cruel Sea it displayed an Optima Releasing screen and frooze on 9 seconds on every attempt.

I ran a Reset on the Setup menu. I'm not sure if that just reset the menu or the whole player? It didn't help. The Cruel Sea did the same thing. I tried some other Wee-jun B, BD's. Hollywoodland, my first "B" Blu-ray, was deemed an Unknown Format by the deck. On Che, the previews before the film moved vertically, like an ole TV that needed the vertical hold adjusted. I moved past that and the feature played. I tried The Cruel Sea again. It frooze at 9 seconds. I put in a Wee-jun 2 DVD, The Dambusters Raid. It played, no problemas...

Anybody know of any kind of Reset that might help? Maybe the BD reader is just dying? Does anybody repair these decks?

Does anyone have the old Momitsu BDP 899 firmware update BDP-899_English_Japanese_France_PKG-064_090330. rar stored on file that they could send me? I believe it was the update before the new one in 2010 that removed the multi-region capabilities. I have a Tevion player which is a clone of this one, and after I recently updated the firmware the multi-region code has stopped working. I've found some dead links for this and people on forums who say they had it. Anyone here? I'd be very grateful!

I'm not sure if my firmware has become corrupted because I can still play DVDs but I can't play BDs even if I use the region change codes.

As anyone got any ideas why this is? Are there two lasers in there, a red and a blue?

Also, the Momitsu website is down and I was going to try and udpate the firmware (yes, I know that will remove the region free capabilty). What happened to them?

Is there anywhere to get the firmware?

Many thanks.

I got mine cleaned and it's working again! It's nice to have an extra player around for when some freakin' kopy poofing BD won't play in the main player.

Hi Rachael, what do you mean you cleaned it? Did you send it to have it cleaned? did you do it yourself?
My Momitsau is droping out very often and reboots after a while.
Thanks,
Jacek

A tech cleaned the reader for me. It's still working. It's never been my main player. I did have periods when I had firmware problems with my Panasonic players and used it more. It was my first M-R BD player. I've used it in the past month just to blow the dust out. Our units are getting old. Mine has low miles and was only driven by a little old lady on Sundays....

Thanks, I think mine is gone...
It will start playing and after random time delay it will loose it all and start reboot the process and start loading disc all over again. It will not remember where it stopped.
I tried to clean it and check connections but nothing works.
Any suggestions for inexpensive zone free BR player?
Thanks,
Jacek

They have a wide variety of Wee-jun emancipated players at 220 Electronics. I got an Oppo 93 there a few years back. They have a variety of models available. Look closely, some are Wee-jun Free for DVD only. They usually have 20 or more players to pick from.
