Trying a couple other Magnolia BB's tonight. Abt came down from MSRP but it's still a long way from $250.

Jake,

Why not just order from Vanns.com.

I am in the same dilemma. I currently own 3 51FD's (and paid less than the cost of 1 23FD @ Vann's price for all 3 of them) and an SC-25. What I'm pondering is if the multichannel PQLS is worth the price of an upgrade? I know what it does for music, which is noticeable to my ears, but wonder if it will do THAT much to movie soundtracks. Has anyone here done a comparison, and if so, could you please share your experience? Thanks.

for $30, get the 23FD. the extra year of warranty and the free HDMI cable (from VANNS.com) makes it worth it.

i assume the ELITE is like the SONY ES in that the quality of the parts are more tightly regulated. e.g., the components within the signal paths have tighter tolerances between the left and right (and other channels). not sure how true this is for the ELITE products; though, it is stated on their website that the 23 uses "audiophile capacitors".

finally, fwiw, at one of the bb's in chicago, the bb COST (what they paid for it) of the 23fd was about $215 while the 320 was about $120.

True, the $30 is definately worth peace of mind and priceless in the WAF catagory. I believe the Elites are built to a higher standard than a lot of their counterparts and use higher quality components but for my middle aged eyes and ears the 320 has outperformed my three previous blu ray players handily.

I buy almost everything at ABT. I told them of the Vann's deal and they quoted me a price of $299 which was $60 under their cost. I may shop that Vann's price around at different Magnolia's (such as Gurnee, IL) and see if they'll match it. My experience with Best Buy is that you have to call around because some managers are a lot more flexible on price than others. I even got Magnolia in Gurnee to drop the price of the SC25 down to $939 from the $999 sale price they had on that unit a month ago by proving to them that ABT would match their sale price and do a 4 year warranty for $69 instead of $129 (which was the actual truth). Let me know if any Best Buys will match the Vann's deal.

I stopped at the Best Buys in Niles (Golf and Greenwood) and over by Old Orchard. Niles had it on the shelf marked down to the $249.98 price. Old Orchard wouldn't budge off of $499. I called my favorite salesman at Abt and left a message to see if he can come close to that price. Honestly I'd rather give Abt $300 than give $250 to Best Buy or Vann's. Local business.

So, 2012 came in today and will play fine on my ol bedroom BD-35, but wont play on this POS 320. I'm really starting to regret not buying another Panny for my HT, because this thing is a little buggy for the price.

Thanks Pio

Please let me know what Abt quotes you on it out of curiousity. I agree with you that I'd almost always prefer Abt over Best Buy but for the price and the 2 year standard warranty, I'd rather save the money. I already own this player (Abt gave me this player in exchange for a broken Sammy 5000 that was under warranty but very expensive to repair) and was thinking about picking up a second one. The player really has been flawless so far and the DVD upconversion is great (I think even better than the Sammy 5000 Reon player was). The BDP 320 at $149 is also a spectacular deal at J&R (very reputable). On that player, Abt would only go down to $189 but give me an extra year on the warranty. I'm still undecided but leaning toward the BDP23FD.

I second that. Does PQLS really matter for Blu-ray movies?

Read this quote:

Spokesman Yoshitaka Yaeguchi told HCC that the multi-channel implementation has been made with music in mind: There are more music releases coming to Blu-ray and the benefits of the system are clear. It's not really so evident on movie soundtracks.'

Nope, Pioneer should have better taste in FW and learn from who's been doing it the best, Panasonic.

If you are gonna charge a pretty price for a pretty player, just make sure it plays discs. Bad thing is, people said "don't buy them because the support is not as good". I've had a couple of new discs that have to be popped in and out a few times, then it also wont play slightly marked (netflix) movies worth a darn, both the Panny does better.

I have never had a problem playing any of my DVD's and or blue ray disc's on my 320. That being said I have ordered the 23FD for the great price of 249.00. I figured BB can have the 320 back for their 299.99 that I paid, I guess that is the benefit of the silver premier card and the 45 day return policy.

Same here, just pulled the trigger. I don't want to make the same mistake that I made with the 500M Kuro--I waited too long and ended up paying a little more than I wanted.

I think it's a great deal as it's substantially cheaper than any other online retailer. And if I drove around Chicago looking for the same price I'd still have to cough up 10% sales tax. Ouch.

Its certainly a great bargain considering these may be the very last generation of genuine Pioneer optical disc players ever.

Well, you guys arent using Netflix enough then. All I'm saying, is after 2 years of two diff Panny players, I shoulda listened to a couple folks I asked, and bought another Panny.

No comparison for FW updating and reliability for playing movies.

Except the panny's look like hell upscaling and feel pretty darn fragile to me, I hate the flip down memory expansion door on the front! And the audio quality is not in the same league.

And if I've never had a disc fail to load, how can the panny be any more reliable?

None of which matter if you want to watch a BR movie that plays every time... The one thing it should do right is play the damn movie.

And my 320 does just that, and so much more!

It is unfortunate, ElwayLite, but every product has its share of lemons, and looks like you have one. Far and away most users seem to have very few problems with the 320/23fd

Maybe a little something is stuck on your laser head. That often has caused disc recognition problems on optical players I have owned. A little cleaning and the problems go away.

I would not call it a lemon, it just does not play a scratched movie, or certain movies as reliably as panasonics, enough said. I like it, but like I said, I was warned(by HT retailers), so shame on me.

Problem here, is many take off the objective blinders after they drop $299 for something. I've had a BD30, have a BD35 and the BDP320. I would recommend the panny's to a family member or friend, I would not recommend the pioneer.

has anyone heard of there being any Dolby DPLIIz standalone processors being developed. I would like to eventually take advantage of this sound field with my 23 and 94, but I'm hoping to not to have to upgrade my 94 to get. Possibly using one of the newly announced pioneer receivers to get there will work? I'd appreciate any insights.

How do you compare the 320 to the Oppo 83SE?
