Just got 5004. The player is actually quite nice: plays Avatar without any firmware update! BD PQ is good, and I am surprised to find DVD playback good too. I read Winston assessment of 5003 which was one of the poorest in terms of DVD [Quality 5], so it seems that they have improved it by quite a bit. Anyone else tested it?

It's almost identical to the Momitsu BDP-899 but with 24bit/192KHz 7.1 multi-channel analog outputs instead of just stereo. My understanding is that they are not OEMed from Funai.

the Denon an Marantz ranked lower. Was it due to the high >$500 MSRP.

Market prices change rapidly and I believe below are current prices for players I'm considering.

Oppo 83 $499
Oppo 80 $289
Marantz BD7004 $399
Denon DBP2010CI $299

How would this list rank at today's prices?

For me, the Denon appears to be the choice from this group and worth the extra ~$50 over what I paid for the Pio BDP-23FD last Christmas: http://winstonsreviews.com/?page_id=63

Instead of looking at the overall rank why don't you just compare what is important to you ? PQ and AQ are most important above all (for me i.e), and according to that ranking the Marantz, Denon and Oppo are very close to each other. I think the Marantz and the Denon are the same. If speed in not a factor then the Denon is surely a bargain at the current prices. I may get one myself. If you want speed or universal disc player then Oppo it is.

I want to hear opinions from people who don't have a dog in the fight.

Same here, PQ & AQ.

I'm just curious why the Denon does not rank higher or closer to the Oppo 80. Price is nearly identical, and a couple reviews rank it slightly higher in PQ & AQ.

Are there problems with the Denon?

No, the Denon loses mark for speed, feature and value. Winston actually gave the Denon 9.5 for PQ and 10 for AQ vs. 9 and 8 respectively for the Oppo 80. So based on those two criteria, the Denon tops the Oppo 80 and is the equal of the Oppo. Winston might chime in later.

Unless I'm mistaken and the pattern has broken, the Marantz should be a clone of the Denon aside from outer appearance. If I were considering the Marantz and don't currently own any Marantz gear, I would take the cheaper Denon over the Marantz as the innards should be more or less identical.

Marantz salesman will claim otherwise, but you can tell by looking at their remote controls, rear inputs/outputs, and user manuals how similar they are.

Pioneer broke my heart.
Denon broke my wallet.
Oppo broke my thinking.

From what I've read they are the same machine with some tweaks.

The Marantz gets a longer warranty and supposedly hardware upgrade to the audio circuitry. I don't know if the claim is for the 2-ch analog outs out all analog outs?

Now I am confused.

I think I have my search narrowed to the Marantz, Dennon, and Oppo 83. Is there a difference that is worth the difference in money between the Marantz and Denon?

I will be using a 60" Pioneer Elite to view the picture and I am not in need of any networking capabilities because my XBOX360 does netflix and my airportexpress streams my music from computer. Am I missing any other features that might be cool to have?

Right now I am leaning toward the Denon but I don't want to miss out on something. Most important is PQ for my DVD (upscale) viewing and audio via coax/optical.

Are there problems with the Denon?

no, it's pretty simple:

1) the Oppo is faster
2) the Oppo has a better video processing solution (higher end ABT chip)
3) the Oppo is a universal player (the Denon 2010 cannot play SACD)

Nothing is wrong with the Denon. It's just not as good as the Oppo, which is not a huge indictment when the Oppo BD-83 was the consensus best BDP on the market.

Note that the new Denon 2011 model (replacing the 2010) has improved several of these areas, as it now is a universal player with SACD support and has upgraded the ABT chip to the 2015 (equivalent to that in the Oppo BD-83). It also has network support for Netflix which the Oppo lacks.

You should note that these reviews will not be updated, as Winston has taken his reviews / ranking offline at his personal website: http://winstonsreviews.com/

Considering the specs that matter are identical, I don't think it really makes a difference what's been "upgraded" in the Marantz.
In the manuals:

Denon 2010 (pg 48)
http://usa.denon.com/DBP-2010CI-OM-E...I-OM-E_406.pdf

Marantz 7004 (pg 49)
http://us.marantz.com/BD7004_U_EN.pd...D7004_U_EN.pdf

S/N ratio - 115dB
Total Harmonic Distortion @1kHz - 0.004%
Dynamic Range - 100 dB (BD/DVD) / 98dB (CD)

In my mind, they are the same because they spec the same (none claims to be better than the other in the above specs). I would imagine the 2011 models mentioned by batpig follow the same pattern.

If you go for the Marantz, you either already have Marantz gear or want the longer warranty. Otherwise, choose the Denon every time (firmware updates get to the Denon faster).

Pioneer broke my heart.
Denon broke my wallet.
Oppo broke my thinking.
