Joe: How does this player match up against the Oppo for performance, speed, features, etc. to you?

According to their compare players page it doesn't.

Hey Joe,

I noticed in your review (great review by the way) you said the 1000ES has better picture than the 5000ES. Is the 1000ES 14bit processor or is it 12bit?

Is it better because of the different type of processor in the 1000ES (Sony vs. Marvel) ?

Originally I wanted to get the 5000ES but it was too expensive, but if the 1000ES is just as good or even better in terms of loading and picture quality than I guess I fine getting the 1000ES.

Trust me. I had them both side by side playing the same exact movie and you are losing nothing getting the 1000ES (as long as you are planing to Bitstream). I picked the 09FD over the 5000ES because of the Marvell chip. That is why I like the 1000ES better then the 5000ES as well. Does that mean you should dump your 5000ES today and go for this one? Absolutely not. The difference is very small (like it was with the 09FD) but with using test patterns and Real-Time viewing I am able to get the same satisfying picture I get with the 09FD (which btw, I picked over the DVD-A1 for Blu ray playback). Marvell is the current King (in my opinion) and the 1000ES is special because of it...

I like the Oppo (I keep saying that) but the picture is still a little behind the 09FD and DVD-A1. Just a little though. The 1000ES is equal to the 09FD and DVD-A1. So in terms of overall pic Q the 1000ES gets the nod. As far as performance goes, the 1000ES loads very fast. Some movies (like Roadhouse) were on in seconds. Other titles (like T2) took a little longer. Though I will say T2 did not take as long as it does on most other players. Actually not even close. The remote is very responsive. No issues there. The Wi-Fi is also very nice since it allows me to keep my ethernet adaptor plugged into whichever Onkyo reciever I am using (currently 3007). Speaking of which, the 1000ES jumps back and forth from BD-Live faster than any player I have tested before. I should add that into my review. Of course results may vary depending on other factors... I know it costs more than the Oppo but sometimes you have to pay a little more to get a lot more. Other times you have to pay a lot more to get a little more. The 1000ES is the best player I have reviewed for under $1,000.00.

When do you think we'll see that review?

Wow. That's saying something because I know you were very impressed with the Oppo and I believe it was your previous "best player under a grand" if I remember correctly.

Looking at Sony's website, they have a new entry level player....BDP-N460....and the only differences between it and the 1000ES using their compare function is the:

HD Reality Enhancer
Super Bit Mapping
WiFi

Does that sound right? I've always been under the impression that these sorts of video clean up gimmicks are never as good as turning them off and seeing the picture unaltered. But JoeRod's review seems to say otherwise.

Anybody have any thoughts to share on this?

Sadly Mookie, the Super Bit Mapping and HD Reality Enhancer are what make the 1000ES...

Hi Q,

I am going to start working on my next receiver review. I was hoping to do a PJ before but it looks like it might be a little longer.

I have always been a firm believer that build quality meant something. The 1000ES is the first player I have come across where it doesn't.

This player and Joe's impressions make me wonder if a 5000ES successor is also forthcoming this year or if this is it from Sony along with the megachangers and the s60 units.

Actually not to much. Load times are close. Since I get the same pic Q as the 09FD/DVD-A1 I am favoring the 1000ES overall. Still, the Oppo offers quite a bit for its price tag. For sick people like me though, I squeeze out every last drop...

With as many players you review is there any chance you could come up a standard image you use to compare each player? Sort of like what I do... here are two images I captured between the OPPO and Pioneer (both configured as I would use them).

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...5#post16790845

It would let us see the differences and more importantly decide which player we prefer. Knowing there is a difference versus preferring one over another can be totally different.

I understand but at this time I have absolutely no plans to review anymore Blu ray players the rest of 09. I may do that in the future though.

Joerod, did you take the unit apart to verify it had Marvell written on the LSI. The chip in the 5000 is also a Marvell chip although Sony rebadged it. Marvell worked hand in hand with Sony when they designed that circuit, Just as Pioneer did with the 09. The Marvell website doesn't list the 1000ES as having their processor!!!
Does it use the older 88DEE270 or the newer Marvell 88DE2750. That is supposed to be the hottest thing around. Perhaps better than one in the Pioneer and Sony 5000 and even perhaps better than the Realta or VRS ABT2010.

Sony CREAS = Marvell and Marvell = Sony CREAS????

or...

From page 71 of BDP-S5000ES manual:

"Specifications and design are subject to change without notice".

If Sony CREAS = Marvell, why the announcement in june 2009? (The player is available since 2008 right?)

I spoke with Marvell and they said they worked very closely with Sony in designing the chip to their specifications from the beginning. Sony just decided to do their own thing (which the big boys often do) and rebadge it as "Creas". It has always been a Marvell chip inside. The fact that it doesn't perform it standardized testing as well as say the Oppo or Pioneer may be due to some tweaking on Sony's part. In real world performance, it is a phenomenal player!

Can any BDP-S1000ES owners comment on the HD Reality Enhancer and Super Bit Mapping? Are these worthwhile? Do you use them?
