PS3 Slim bitsreams Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA audio, at last
by Thomas Ricker posted Aug 21st 2009 at 1:53AM

Slowly, ever so slowly we're beginning to learn about the internal differences between Sony's new PS3 Slim and its chubby ancestry. We already knew that it supported BraviaLink while talk of "faster gaming" was introduced (suspiciously) yesterday; something that remains very much in doubt until we can confirm. Now we hear that the fatboy gone slim supports Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio bitstream output to your receiver. Hear that audio nerds? Bitstream. See the HDMI chip on previous generations of the PS3 didn't support bitstream output of the new(ish) high def codecs like Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA. As such, the PS3 had to decode it internally before sending it over to your receiver via LPCM. A process that could garble the lossless audio depending on your setup. Even though the vast majority of people will never notice the difference (or even care), PS3 Slim owners can still kick back in smug satisfaction each time the TrueHD or DTS-HD MA indicators light-up on their receivers.

Too bad you still have to give the PS3 a USB-Dick to use a universal remote otherwise I was really considering the slim.

The PS3 Slim now has BRAVIA Sync (aka HDMI-CEC) so you can theoretically control your PS3 Slim using your TV remote (or AVR remote). So no USB adapter needed. It's also reported to be dead silent.

And this helps what, 2% of the market at most? Sony only has a couple of HDTVs with this ability. There is no guarantee it will work with other manufacturers HDMI-CEC ready components.

Sony REALLY F'd up by not adding an IR sensor. The king of add-ons won't let go of their $25 remote. Thank God I got one for under $15 when Circuit City went belly up.

Seriously, how much could it cost to add IR.

Agree.....You go the extra mile to replace the HDMI chip, but cant add IR?

I think the reason why Sony did not add an IR sensor is that they don't only want to sell this unit as a Blu-Ray player. They loose money or just about break even on each PS3 but they make money on the games that are sold. Putting in an IR sensor would hurt sales of other stand alone players including Sony's own models. The cost of making most stand alone units is much less than the PS3.

My XBR4 apparently has Bravia Sync. Does this mean I won't need a BT/IR adapter for the PS3 slim to work with my Harmony remote? If so that would be sweet.

That makes sense, but why do they keep making it such an outstanding BD player? It just seems like they'd "dumb" it down more if they didn't want people buying it for the express purpose of movie watching (which is what I did and will do again with the slim model).

Harmony adapter is awesome. Integrates with the system quite well. Well worth the money to not have a jury-rigged solution that can't power the system up.

I don't see why it wouldn't. That would even allow the TV to power up and down the PS3.

Have you ever been over an hour into a blu-ray and come across a scene where the dialogue stops and all you could hear was your ps3's fan running at high speed sounding like a jet about to take off....

I just got the ps3 adapter from logitech and it's great. I do notice a slight delay likely do to the adapter reciving the ir blast and taking a split second tom transmit it as bluetooth.

One thing I love it that when i hit the power button on my harmony remote it turns the ps3 off. I thought I was going to have to do a sequence of commands to power down like on the sixaxxas.

I've been using the controller for so long it doesn't bother me, but I'd probably like using the adaptor if I ever try it out. It's actually starting to sound worth trying. I'm sure I'd probably find it more convenient.

hmmmm PS3 Slim has bitstreaming, and you guys didn't really comment on it yet

I never cared about bitstreaming as I would rather have pure PCM, but I know some of you out there will treat this as your new erotic fantasy

Bitstreaming. Hmmm. Nope, don't think the wife will consider that a necessity for our bedroom setup.

It's simply an option that some people felt the PS3 should have had. Personally, I never cared if it did or not since it didn't affect me.

Great news if you use the PS3 for watching Blu-ray movies with a high-end surround sound system. If not, just nod and know that this is a good thing.
