Any news on a region free hack?

I'm considering selling mine if they come up with one soon.

As for 3D, I'm gonna wait that out a while, wait till there's more content/choice.

I'm also glad to be sticking with the Denon brand, I'm definately a fan!

Well picked up one of these beasts at the weekend, a very nice machine indeed! Complex to set up though! It took me ages to get the thing to bitstream to my amp! But I do actually love that feature- being able to quickly change between HD audio and mixed, it's great for PIP comantaries and stuff.

One quirk though, I've noticed it likes turning on my TV and selecting the relavant AV input (doesn't turn the amp on though, if it happens to be off and just doing HDMI passthrough) when ever I press play. Fine for a DVD or Blu-ray sure, but pretty annoying should I be using the projector or just want to listen to a CD/SACD...

Anyway to stop this?
Also, does anybody use the Pure Direct function?

Turn of the HDMI CEC control off and that should fix the problem.

I found that Denon must have activated all of the audio outputs during playback in an update. I have struggled with switching between blu-ray, DVD and multi-channel music since I have my 4010 set up for several different inputs on my Denon receiver. I have a coax digital cable connected for dvd as well as the Denon Link cable for my SACDs/DVD-As and was never able to get audio from a standard DVD. Denon told me it was because of the Denon Link cable. Now all audio outputs appear to be live when playing a disc.

Well I am a new owner of this unit. I got a great price on a refurbished unit. I wanted to get the Marantz UD8004 but it was like $300+ more. I got this to replace a Denon DVD-3910 and Pioneer Elite BDP-23FD.

I have not spent much time with it yet. I played one SACD and it sounded really nice. Just not sure if it is quite as good as my Denon 3910. I will have to do some more A/B testing to compare.

I am using this in a high-end 2 ch Audio/Video setup with the analog outputs and HDMI video. I am excited to see the DVD video processing. Also looking through the menus, they has changed quite a bit from my 3910 so I will be spending some time reading through the manual. I am sure I will have some questions.

Does anyone have any suggestion for settings using the 2ch analog audio outputs? If not I am sure I will figure it out eventually.

TommyV,

In the audio set-up menu there is a spot for setting up the analog side of things. You can do your distance and bass management settings there.

I replaced a Samsung 2550 and a Denon 2900 with this unit and I'm pretty pleased overall with it.

Ever heard a Samsung? I can hear mine but it's a huge improvement over my Samsung 2550 player. That thing sounds like garbage compactor when it loads a disc!!

I've owned a DVD-3930CI for a few years now (the successor to the DVD-3910CI) I just love the 2ch analog OUT from this player. But the DBP-4010UDCI is slightly better sounding I think.

Thank you for weighing in on that. I believe the 3910 and 3930 have the same analog section. So have you done an A/B comparison of the two? I am listening to this player and I can definitely tell there is a difference. I cannot say one is better or worse at this point but just a different sound. I will have to do some more critical listening.

This is from me comparing SACD audio from the two players. I am using Rotel 10 series preamp/amp powering B&W CM5s and a REL T-3 sub. The BD audio is definitely an improvement over my Pioneer Elite 23FD though that unit does surprisingly well for the price. I am still running through the paces so I will probably have more to say once I have thoroughly gone through it.

I do find it odd there is no mention of firmware anywhere on denon's website that I could find for this unit. I would think they would do a announcement to go along with the new versions like they have in the past with other models.

Japanese site translated via babelfish:

Or the Japanese site untranslated:

http://denon2.jp/update/index.html

The US site gets updated about 3 times a year, so it will take some time before
they are up to date.

The firmware is not available for download via the network connection here at this time. I am hopeful they can improve the responsiveness of the player with an update. The 4010 is very sluggish in its response to remote commands.

Initializing with pressing "Play", "eject" and "Disc layer" when it says "no disc" did the trick.

Now it plays the Expendables with the software updates.

Interesting as I am still on June firmware to keep region Free for DVD's and had no issue with the Expendables though it was the US version.

4010 is a Singapore player which is a reg A player

Is yours the EU version of Expendables?

Yes, it's from the UK.

There is supposed to be another software update after Christmas. Hopefully that will make it possible to get regionfree DVD again.

I have been told by Australian Denon distributor that Denon will not be making unit region free again; but we will see.

Are there any 4010 owners on this thread that previously owned the Denon DVD-5910? I've owned a 5910 since late 2005, but I'm growing tired of its finickiness in playing many CDs and, in particular, SACDs. The 5910 had a widespread problem with its laser alignment, and I'm not sure it's worth trying to repair at this point. As the 4010 seems to use a different disc transport, I was wondering about owners' experience with disc tracking for CDs, SACDs, and DVD-Audio discs.

I'm only interested in using this as an audio player. I use my Panasonic 3D Blu-ray player for Blu-rays and DVD video discs. I'm also only interested in using it as a transport. I use DenonLink to my Denon AVR-4311 receiver, and I like DenonLink quite a lot (no HDMI handshake issues to worry about!). That's why I'm considering replacing my 5910 with a 4010.

I have not owned the 5910 but I do still have my 3910. If only using it only as an audio player, IMO the 3910 is as good if not slightly better than the 4010. For the price you can get a 3910 for I would be looking at that model if not interested in a BD/DVD player. Mine is a silver version and still under warranty. Currently it is not in use. I got the 4010 so I could go from using two players down to one. If you are interested in any further details fee free to PM me.

After my update on the 4810, I decided to give the 4010 its latest firmware update. Glad it went without a hitch (unlike the scare I had on my 4810).

Anyone tried playing Knight and Day Blu-ray.

I have tried 2 copies from Amazon and both start to get picture breakup at the scene where she heads for the bus.

Can bypass it but it also happens at 2 other spots, which I can bypass again but it is a pain as requires me to stop playback then resume after going back through trailers....etc

Latest firmware in 4010 and also plays perfectly on my TV room player (not a Denon 4010).

I have the DVD-A1XVA (aka 5910) and the BDP 4010-UD. The A1 very definitely beats the 4010 for DVD, no question. And for Audio (CD/SACD/DVD-A) over analogue outs, the A1 is still in another league.

Hi to all,

I purchased my 3800 from ListenUp during the sale just over a year ago but only used it for CDs and DVDs until just the last two weeks when I got a 1080p capable TV (Panasonic G15). From the start when playing Blu-ray discs I have experienced a problem with random freezes of the unit requiring power-off resets. I thought for a while that turning off the deep color had cured them but yesterday experienced a freeze playing Terminator Salvation in 1080p24 mode (with 48 Hz mode on the TV) and another in 60 Hz mode playing a disc of the StarGate Universe Season 1 set.

The unit came factory-loaded with the latest 1.22 firmware so an update is not the answer. It has been a while since Denon released the current firmware and given the time the unit has been out of production I think the chances of seeing another update are going down.

My audio is a moderately high-end two channel music system and I have no plans to go multi-channel any time soon, so one of the reasons I want something like a 3800 or 4010 is the quality of the two-channel analog outputs.

I have no interest in 3D so I am wondering if I should spring for a 4010 while they are still available. The good news here is that I only have about $600 invested in the 3800 so if it gets relegated to audio duties it is not a tragedy. My main concern is that I don't want to buy a more expensive version of the same set of problems. Reading through this thread the 4010 seems pretty solid after firmware updates but I would appreciate opinions from current owners.

Thanks in advance.

IMHO the 4010 only really shines when it is paired with an AVR with DenonLink4. It provides a master clock control for digital signals (for audio and video) and there is a noticeable difference in my setup (4010/4810) as well as my friend's (A1UD/A1 pre/pro) which is bested only by the Bel Canto CD2/DAC3.5VB/VBS combo for CD audio.

But for BD playback, multichannel audio, it is pretty much in a class of its own. I prefer the 4010/4810/DL4 combo to even my Oppo BDP-83SE.

Depending on your budget, you can try checking out the following:
a. Oppo BDP-83SE (I use it in my 2 channel system for DVDA/SACD playback) but chances are most units are only pre-owned and I usually have an aversion to preowned transports.
b. Oppo BDP-95 (improved power, DAC, analog sections over the old SE and dedicated chassis).

If you don't play SACD/DVDA, I'd recommend having a listen to the following:
a. Audiolab 8200 CD/CDQ. Heard it yesterday at the shop. It's got a similar Sabre32 sound signature as the Oppo83SE and the Wyred4Sound DAC2. Over in Singapore, the local pricing is pretty good. Not sure about the US.

b. Bel Canto CD2/DAC3.5VB combo. Still my reference for redbook audio.
