I was all set on buying this player to replace my PS3 for blu-ray duties, primarily because of Netflix. So I'm sitting there waiting to hear from someone saying it's finally working for this player and what happens? Of course, the PS3 gets Netflix first! I just got the email from Netflix, I'll have my instant streaming PS3 disc tomorrow.

No reason for them to withhold Netflix anymore if the PS3 is going to have access to it.

I don't think they are "holding" anything, a new software is needed and that's probably what we are waiting for. The PS3 disk is probably a temporary solution and I expect a new software to replace it soon.

Quick question: Does the BDP-N460 play DivX movies? I have gone through the treads, read the manual, and didn't see anything about DivX. Can an owner test this and report back?

Thanks,

Joe

In case you don't get a better answer, chances for divx on a sony are slim. My S350 wouldn't play them. As far as I can tell, the file format specs are the same on this one. I know panasonic plays divx, but they don't stream. My Insignia streams and plays xvid, but not divx.

I know the PS3 plays DivX, and I thought I read somewhere the S560 did also, but now, I am not sure. This player is a perfect fit for me if it does DivX.

Thanks for the responses.
I had seen the November statement in an earlier post hoped for some new info.
I sent an email to Sony and got back a form letter that states it will be fall 2009.
I guess Sony doesn't even know.

Thanks

You mean the S350? It's an older model blu-ray player. The S360 added DTS MA decoding. And the N460 adds streaming to that. I would expect all other aspects to be about the same.

I've read through the 7 pages on the S460 and it has me wondering does the S560 have the same streaming sites available to it? What is the difference between the S460/S560 other than the S560 having WiFi?
I already have a PS3(original launch 20GB) that still works fine but relieving it of Blu-Ray duties is what I have in mind. Also reading through the PS3 Blu-Ray thread has me wondering if a "slim" PS3 would be a better choice than the S460/S560.
I have an extensive SD-DVD library that my Sony DVP-NC85H does a very good job of upconverting. This is also aided by my Onkyo TX-NR807 feeding a Samsung HL-S6187 all through HDMI.
Bottom line question opinions to go with a "slim" PS3 or either a S460 or S560.

Other than the PS3, the N 460 is the only Sony player that streams. The wifi on the 560 is only for updates and the Blu ray live features.

Thank you maggiefan for the information on streaming abilities ,well inability, of the S560 compared to S460/PS3. That seems to be such a waste of potential of the WiFi feature/capability of the S560.

Interesting that the PS3 can now stream Netflix while the N460 still can't. Another indication that the PS3 is the more adaptable/upgradeable of the two?

Still stuck on the fence between these two.

WHEN the N460 starts Netflix, it will not require a disc to be loaded each time you want to use the service like the PS3 does now temporarily (until it is integrated into it's firmware).

P.S. The 'Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" promo showed up on top of the video section list yesterday (for me, maybe earlier for others).

Just turned on the player this morning and it downloaded a new firmware update M02.R.120
No mention of it on Sony's site and I'm not sure what changed in it. I only noticed 1 thing, last night with the 094 firmware I tried watching the sample HD video from Amazon and it said it was supposed to be 5.1DD but it was only 2.0 sound. I tried watching it again after this new firmwre installed and now I get 5.1DD.
Still no Netflix or Fear.Net though. I sent Sony an email about Fear.Net and they replied saying my complaint was being forwarded to Fear.Net

Edit: Ok I just checked and now Sony's site shows the update and says...

Improvement over firmware version 094:

Enables the Blu-ray Disc™ player to receive the Netflix Streaming Service.

We're getting closer to it working but as of now it still isn't even after getting the update.

Thank you for the update. I'll install the new firmware ASAP.

P.S. According to this Gizmodo story, Netflix told G4 it could be up to a whole year before Netflix support is integrated into the PS3's firmware. Time will tell of course. Until then, the disc will have to be used each time.

Yep I just checked Netflix's page a few minutes ago and saw the Sony player listed. Went and started up the blu ray player and there it is.

Just checked out a few minutes of some movies and so far the quality looks better than when I play them back on my XBOX 360 Elite via hdmi. With the 360 sometimes the video would be slightly choppy but I don't see this on the Sony so far. The video quality looks a little better too but maybe that's just wishful thinking. Anyways I like it but the only complaint is why doesn't Netflix let you browse all the instant watch movies instead of only letting you see whats in your queue, it would be so much nicer if you could sit on the couch and browse all the movies to watch. At least on the XBOX it let you see your queue plus some recommended movies in the genres you like.

Oh they also added National Public Radio to the Audio section.

Netflix streaming is working for me as well, but the quality is dissapointing. Even the HD looks pretty soft. It's not terrible but I was expecting too much I guess.

Also sound is always PCM 2/0 channel. With every single movie I tried, all I get is PCM 2/0 sound. Is this the way netflix encodes all the sound on their streaming movies, or just the ones I tried out?

Yea even with the XBOX 360 it was just 2.0 sound.
The quality isn't the greatest with streaming video but I guess I got used to that after seeing it for a while on the 360, at least the quality seems to be a bit better on the Sony though.

Thanks for the update again. I just watched UP last night on the N460 which was over around just after 10PM. I didn't think to try Netflix again before shutting down. Will set it up this evening.

The BDP-N460 does not have built in wireless networking.

Thank you.That would do it.

I don't have a Netflix membership but I viewed a Superman Returns HD trailer on Amazon Video On Demand.
The picture quality was excellent.

Yep that sample Superman Returns video did look nice and the sound was 5.1 too. Sadly Netflix only sends out 2.0 sound.

Hello

I'm glad I came across this post. We got a flyer from Sony a few days ago advertising this new model. We have a cheap Insigna we bought last year at BB when we got our other Sony. Not having a "Live" connection is bugging me and I'm really looking hard at this model to pair with the new Sony 52Z5100

My main concern is PQ; BD and DVD with Netflix down the chain. I've seen the S360 on sale but was hoping for some "internal upgrades" instead of repackaging the same-ole-same-ole adding a port here and new service there. Should I consider this model or if PQ is my thing look at another one?

PQ is my thing too and I think the picture quality looks outstanding with blu ray.
Before this I had an upconverting Sony DVP-NS75H dvd player and the picture quality looked pretty darned good to me but this new blu ray player looks a little better when upconverting regular dvds.
Like I said earlier I think Netflix looks a little better than it does on the 360 too.

Now this is my first blu ray player so I can't compare it to any others but I know I really like the quality put out by this machine.

FWIW, BD and DVD PQ on my Insignia NS-BRDVD3 is identical to my S350. The S350 is identical to the S360 except for DTS-MA decoding.
