Mine does too -- it's not connected to the internet, either. I consider it a minor annoyance. The status message goes a way after a short while.

Addenda -- I got it to work. My problem was actually a BRD that had a misleading code -- not the player.

That's great!

So are the 5004's shipping with the new firmware that disables all region functionality? Was thinking of ordering one, but if it's no longer all region capable, then no need. . .

Thanks!

just received one from Amazon.com on Aug 8 2010 and is region free

Seems fine. 2 issues

Inserted regular DVD Time Travellers wife. Could find no way to skip all previews, except to FF (only 2X available) ALL BUTTONS GET RED CIRCLE. ALL. Is this going to happen every time I put in a DVD with previews? I have no library, just Netflixx which won't arrive til tomorrow.

Also received Sherwoods Netboxx and it too seems fine. But can't use iy's remote with the BDP-5004. Emailed Sherwood and they quickly and nicely replied : "...Unfortunately, Netboxx remote does not support controlling our Blu-ray players. We've already confirmed this error and will correct it for our future models as soon as possible..."

Still, happy with products

Whether or not you can skip previews is decided by the authors of the disc. My understanding is that NetFlix gets their own special versions of movie discs, which are not the same as the commercial versions you can purchase yourself.

If you don't already have one, you might want to consider getting a "universal learning remote" like one of the Harmony series.

Anyone had any issues with their BDP-5004 connected to a Mitsubishis DLP? When playing a disc (BD or DVD doesn't matter) with HDMI connection the screen will occasionally go blank. Switching to component connection will usually produce a picture, and if the HDMI cable is removed component will always work.

I have an idea it may have something to do with the Mits C9's annoying habit of trying to control peripherals based on which input is being used, but I'm not sure.

Thanks for the reply, Todd. Turned out the player had a physical HDMI connector problem, and Sherwood repaired the player under warranty. I'll have it back this afternoon.

Well, Sherwood replaced the main board with a new one, so now I have my HDMI feed back and looking good. Unfortunately, the new board is loaded with the March 2010 firmware that removes region switching, so I can't watch my imported Blu-rays anymore.

Anyone have the older firmware from August 2009 that I can use to downgrade my player? Also, not sure about the procedure for doing so.

Sherwood sent me the older firmware, so I'll try the downgrade tonight and report back.

Yep, downgrade was quick and flawless. All-region viewing is back.

Hey guys. This is probably common knowledge but I accidentally upgraded the firmware on the Sherwood 5003 and it neutralized the region switching. Thankfully, I had a copy of the old firmware on a cdr and was able to switch back. I was stupidly under the impression that the latest firmware only effected the 5004 and momitsu.

I just got a repaired BDP-5004 back from Sherwood -- and I have the same problem. I would be happy to just be able to play Region B discs (as I have something else that can play Region A ones). ;~{

I sent an e-mail to Sherwood, I hope I can get a copy of the old firmware too!

Chalk up another satisified owner (so far ).

Received unit from Amazon with August 2009 firmware and after a couple of attempts played region B "Thirst" after entering 973502 (after power on with no disc etc).

I did run into an output resolution problem on my receiver with region B "Antichrist", but it's one of those nasties encoded at 50fps (player is set to 1080p / NTSC).

Edit: Problem solved -- forced resolution to 1080p instead of Auto.
I will tinker around and see if I can get around that problem, but so far I have been very impressed with the PQ / AQ.

I got some March 2010 firmware from Sherwood -- not sure that this actually is old enough firmware. In any event, it doesn't seem to have helped solve my problem.

I wonder if the European BDP-904 uses the same sort of firmware? I can't test this, as I can't get a complete download from sherwood's German website.

I'm sorry if I'm asking the obvious, but I cannot seem tofind the exact information I need in this thread - does the new firmware upgrade remove all region-free capability or does it just affect the blu-rays? I could live without that, but I really need the player to stay region-free for DVDs.

It only disables Blu-rays from outside your region. DVDs still play fine, and no code need be entered to play them.

Does anybody have the August 2009 firmware for the Sherwood 5004 blu ray player and is willing to share? I sent it off for repairs and they updated it to the March 2010 firmware and I can't play my region b blus. I'd greatly appreciate it!

You may download the firmware from this location:

The password is "sherwood" (without the quotes).

I just ordered this player today. I downloaded the older firmware in case mine comes with the latest version. Are the instructions for loading firmware in the owner's manual?

If they aren't all you need to do is burn the ISO to a CD. Insert the CD into the player and close the drawer. Follow the prompts.

Can anyone try to play newest blu-ray discs like Avatar Special Edition (with new BD+ protection) on your Sherwood 5004? I guest you need firmware update in order to play it. And what about Avatar Bd-live? "Live Extras" are working or not?

I've not tried AVATAR on my Sherwood since I don't own the BD and don't intend to purchase anything except the 3D version should it ever become available to Panasonic non-owners. I wasn't that thrilled with the story itself, so I only want the 3D eye candy.

That doesn't answer your question though. So far I have not found a disc I cannot play, but that doesn't mean it won't happen eventually.

Well, it's not the answer I hoped:-) Theoretically it won't play. Latest firmware update - March, Avatar was released on 22nd April and many BD-player's owners had a problem with the disc.

Bought a Sherwood Region Free BDP-5004 from Buy.com. It only cost $109.99 with free shipping and I got it in a few days(today it came).

I got it because of it's region free DVD capabilities, as well as it's ability to play VCDs and SVCDs. Very happy to report that all these discs, and I tried many, played with no problem.

Amazingly, I cannot get one BLU RAY disc to play on this player. I received a "no disc" message after an attempt to play Toy Story 3. I then had all other Blu Ray discs ejected that I tried to play afterwards(i.e. Halloween, Terminator Salvation).I live in the US and these were all Region A discs. I even tried a UK Blu Ray of The Fog and the same issue. This disc has played on all my other Blu Ray players region free and not.

Not sure what my problem is but there must be something I'm missing. I find it hard to believe that a Blu Ray player could be so faulty that not one Blu Ray can play on it but every other disc can.

Has anyone had a similar issue? What, if any, suggestions might someone have about this problem? As always, input is greatly appreciated.
