Figured out that if you go to the Settings Menu-> Resetting -> Initialize Personal Information and reset your personal internet settings, then go back to the Video menu and refresh the internet video settings, that brought back all apps. Yay!

Dropped frames?

Has anyone else had issues with dropped frames on their s570?
I was watching a BD disc tonight and found that the player was constantly dropping frames. Tried switching between 24hz and 60z output, and also between 720p and 1080p and it happened no matter what the setting.

Is this a sign that the disc drive is failing? It's the first disc that's had the problem and its never had the issue before. I tried two other discs and couldn't duplicate the problem. I put the offending disc back in and sure enough, dropped frames.

The disc plays fine in another player.

Can anyone suggest anything?

I guess buying a new player wouldn't be a good suggestion? For less than my S570 I bought an S6200. The 2015 models will be out soon.

Please mention the offending title. Does the screen go black or is it just jerky motion?

I was hoping to avoid it. I rather like this player. I feel like it's got a great overall design and I like the UI. (not to mention it has fantastic picture and audio quality, plus I love the fact that it has the ability to play virtually anything I put in it from a USB stick). I'm not a huge fan of the new Sony designs and I really dislike the small/cheap form factor that the other manu's are pushing.

Star Wars Ep 1 Blu-ray from the complete collection set. I've checked the disc and there isn't anything virtually wrong with it.
The motion is jerky. It'll pause for a second and then immediately skip 2 or 3 frames (I'm guessing) and then show the following frames in a faster motion in order to catch up to the sound. The sound never skips a beat.

The UI for 2015 is supposed to be very different. If it's like my Sony TV get prepared for something slow and stupid. But it does have a PlayStation shortcut. The S790 was supposed to be the last good one. I don't mind the case and the S6200 has the same XBR menu system. If only we could sort the columns.

Is the S790 overly expensive? If i had the cash, i would run for an OPPO but the 790 seems to be a monster of a player.

I never had one. Many posts have indicated it is the best of show for Sony. There is a thread for it. I don't follow it or know the current price. Most "power users" are waiting for the S6500 or have the S7200. There may be an S7500, but I could be wrong. Check the S6200 thread. You can find my posts and what I don't like about it. I do, however, like more than dislike. The S6200 is the "lowest" dual-core but..... see the thread.

Oh yeah, it was expensive.

You should be able to get a 790 really cheap now that it's 3 generations old. I sold my last 790 for about $100 a few years ago. As far as being a monster, it weighs about 6 tons, is the size of a coffee table and could survive a nuclear blast. It's one of the few players that had dual HDMI outs, if you need that sort of thing. My $40 Sony 1200 performed just as well, so I never understood what all the fuss was about. I guess it was top of the line for Sony 3 years ago, but I wouldn't buy one today unless I got a really, really good deal and had a Roku or something else for streaming.

Getting worse...

I guess I'm going to have to bite the bullet and replace my 570. Now as soon as I put in a br disc, it goes right into its semi-locked up mode. Same scenario every time. Player starts up, I get the "Sony Blu-Ray" logo on the screen and then the screen goes blank without going to the home menu screen like it used to. The disc starts to play but only the audio, no picture. Pressing the home button on the remote stops the disc, at least the audio, the display says "home" but no picture, no menu. Tried ejecting and reloading, turning off the player and back on, no luck. Gave up and went in the den and watched St.Vincent on my smaller TV with my Samsung player.

In the past, unplugging and leaving it to sit overnight would remedy the situation. Obviously that's not a practical solution. Seems a shame that Im going to ditch this unit as it seems like a software issue and something that could be easily fixed if somebody knew how. I checked to make sure that I'm on the latest firmware and I am. Don't know that I can buy another Sony in good faith. Very frustrating to say the least.

They don't make them like that anymore. I still use my S570 for streaming audio. The S6200 is very good, and there should be some new 2015 models soon. I would hold out if you can. If you like the solid build, there may be a low mileage S790 on eBay or other places. Good luck.

If you have the time, try support.sony.com but they usually just tell you to do a factory reset 3x in a row. That actually seems to fix some problems. And you have nothing to lose.

I have done a factory reset but only one so I'll certainly give the 3x a try. Deep color setting as well.

Thanks!

So the last 2 movies I have tried playing that use dolby atmos audio. When the player is set to AUTO for hdmi audio, the audio goes in and out. If I set it to pcm, it works fine on both, however, maybe this is a placebo effect, but I think the lower, bassy sounds are more prevelent when it's set to auto. the bass isn't as bassy in pcm. Maybe it's just me, but yeah. Any ideas? I am going to an onkyo 705 (yes I know it's old)

When playing a Dolby Atmos title bitstreamed via hdmi to a receiver that is not Atmos capable, the player sends the Dolby TrueHD audio down the line. Does your system handle Dolby TrueHD audio bitstreamed via hdmi ok?

Other players we've read about have had issues with Atmos titles, but only when coupled with a blu-ray title using significant seamless branching and supposedly more related to the seamless branching than the Dolby Atmos audio stream. Lionsgate likes to carve up their main movie into numerous pieces so they can populate the disc with many phony playlists. They think this foils folks trying to rip their title to hard disc (which probably works for about a day or 2 after the title is released). Are the titles you are having trouble with Lionsgate by any chance? Have you had problems with audio dropouts on non Dolby Atmos titles?

John wick and mockingjay are both lionsgate titles. i did have the issue with total recall (2012) also, but that I think was a different issue. I haven't had any other issues other then those particular movies.
And yes, my system has handld Dolby TrueHD audio bitstreamed via hdmi, just fine. As that's how I've had it set since I first set it up. I have no problem upgrading the receiver, just don't want to if I don't need to. So is the only way around the seamless branching audio issue, to just set the player to pcm?

I have not read anywhere else that the Sony BDP-S570 does not properly handle seamless branching on these titles . . but maybe you're the 1st to report it. There are a few Oppo models that have had this issue also, and setting the player to convert the audio to pcm works for them, so I expect that is the solution for your S570 also.

Hmmm. Yeah, I guess I'm reporting that issue then, cause I have it. lol. If I set the audio to pcm, it's fine, but again, I think the bass is less bassy on pcm.

I watched my Mockingjay blu-ray last night on my system (Sony BDP-S1000ES to a Yamaha RX-V3900). I selected Dolby Atmos in the disc menu, which resulted in the player streaming the TrueHD signal down the hdmi wire. I did not get any audio dropouts. My Sony blu-ray player is of similar vintage as the S570. Is it possible Sony put a lesser processor in the S570 than the S1000ES? I don't have a S570 to test with, but I DO have a S550, which is the generation before the S570. I may drag that puppy out of the closet and see how it handles these newer Lionsgate titles with carved up video files.
The BD association should step in here and tell Lionsgate they are operating outside their blu-ray license by sticking consumers with defective discs. All Lionsgate is doing is giving a bad rap to blu-ray lossless audio . . to no other useful purpose . .

yeah, when i had it set to auto, it did show up on my receiver as TrueHd, but like I said, audio dropouts.

Any benefits to buying new BD Player?

Hi all

I'm using a Sony BDP-BX57 player that is about 5 years old.

http://www.blu-ray.com/Sony-BDP-BX57/24825/

Would I see or hear any difference in a new player being sold today? Any advances to improve audio or video quality in Blu ray? I recently got my home theater hooked back up after a few years being boxed away. I've upgraded my receiver to a Denon AVR-X4000 and my new display is an Epson 5030 ub projector. I've got an Axiom 5.1 system for speakers.

Thanks
Josh

I can't cover everything but here's a few points comparing the S570 to the S6200. The case is smaller and the top is not flat. An external power unit is used. The picture looks the same to me. The audio supports more formats. The internet apps are the same. The S6200 uses the 2.4GHz band. The remote is smaller, so I keep using the S570 remote. The front panel on the S6200 can't be disabled - that's a bug. Pandora's screen saver is a bug too. SACD performance is about the same. The newer devices are less expensive. There is an S5500 out now that would be the latest model but has fewer features. You can compare the S5500. S6200 and S7200 on the Sony Store web site. Both newer units have threads on this forum. Please read the S5500 thread for more opinions. Good luck.

I'm waiting for the S6500 before deciding what to do. I may end up doing nothing. My S570 just died recently. making noise and dropping the internet connection.

Mine is making louder then usually noises during playback and constantly dropping wi-fi connection. I guess that means I should start shopping?

That would seem logical. Since I like streaming audio I also bought a Roku 3. The S6200 still is better for DNLA and is a great BD player. No specs or picture of the S6500 yet. If you don't need SACD or 4K, the S5500 looks good. I would shop around.
