After owning the BD-P1500 I would have agreed that statement but the newer models seem much more robust. I'm now on the BD-C5500 and not had a single glitch (keeping fingers crossed).

I think a lot of the early players were still working there way thru this and are now much more stable.

I will confirm that Avatar plays without issue on the Sony BDP-S550. Still on factory FW.

I'll rent it for a buck, The last BR disc played was "Sherlock Holmes" no problems.

As you probably know by now it plays fine in the Sony BDP-S350 (with the latest 020 firmware) it just takes a loooooong time to load.

I don't know. Take a look at Post #207. Someone with that Sammy player couldn't play Avatar properly. That specific model only came out less than 3 months ago and already, it's having compatibility issues. Not good!!

The 460 is a higher end unit and thus, has a better processing power.

The Sony BDP-S360 is a low end unit and is probably the slowest player on the market, LOL! But like you said, one thing I like about it....it works!!! As a former owner of the lightning fast Samsung BD-P1600....I can confirm that the Sammy's don't work!

After that 2 minute wait time, you can now enjoy watching Avatar on this Sony unit.

Ok, I'm back to report some additional news. I popped in the Avatar BD for the second time and am happy to say that there is a resume option after you pop the disc in again. When choose to resume, the loading time will be reduced *significantly* so it's best you use it and just open the menu to start the movie from where you want to begin watching. If you choose "no" on the resume option, it will load the warning screen and all that other junk, thus causing a longer waiting time.

Nope....mine plays the movie right away if you hit "yes."

Just to balance the Samsung reputation a bit. I have a Samsung c5500 with the latest update and Avatar played without any issues.

I just finished watching Avatar straight through on my Sony BDP-S360 and not a single problem. Nothing but flawless playback from beginning to end.

I wonder if a new firmware upgrade will be released soon for this drive.

I have the same macro-blocking issue with a Pioneer BDC-202 in my HTPC also. Sceens like where they are shooting the 'tree' are particularly bad. They also seem to be repeatable at the same places (rewind, same spot happens again). I saved the ISO though and it worked fine. But that's an hour wasted before playtime.

EDIT: I updated firmware (1.04 to 1.07 from 2008) and rechecked a few sceens (first flight, tree 'boom', etc.) and it seems to have fixed it. Though I won't know for sure until I re-watch it fully. Strange that it never had a problem until now.

I watched this last night on my Sony BDP-CX960 changer. It loaded in a reasonable time and played without a problem.

I also watched Avatar last night, the very first BD that I have ever seen, with my new Oppo BDP83. It took a few seconds to load, but played beautifully. I was very impressed, even though it was on my old (2002) Toshiba 42HDX82 CRT.

By shutting the player down and starting again I was able to get it moving again. Over and over this happened. I'm about 90% sure it's the Blu-ray player and not the receiver since the problem doesn't go away if I pause and then swap the HDMI directly to my TV. I have not had problems with any other movies.... although I have only watched 1 other since I just bought the player 2 weeks ago. Has anyone else had this pixilation issue? It would give me peace of mind to know it is just Avatar and not something else in my completely new setup.

Hi CountThis:

I tried Avatar on my SAMSUNG BD-C5500 and didn't have any problems whatsoever with pixelation. I updated to the latest firmware though, which was version # 1010.4. I went to the SAMSUNG website and followed the instructions. I also spoke with mr.Samsung on the forum and he helped me a whole bunch.

Avatar played with all its beauty at 1080p 24fps from start to finish without a hitch after the firmware #1010.4 was loaded. I simply downloaded it from the samsung website and loaded it onto a thumb drive (USB 2.0)...Approximately 5-10 minutes later I was ready to rock & roll.

Everyone please make sure: you have the latest firmware from the manufacturer website. It's also a good practice to do so. I also have many other movies that had problems, especially Disney ones for my daughter for some reason that wouldnt play without an update.

Samsung is doing a fantastic job at the updates, keep them up!!!

Hi Rogus:

To balance the rep a bit, my C5500 with the latest firmware code ran Avatar gorgeously!

Just for the records though,

yesterday I watched Avatar on BD, thru my Oppo BD-80 and everything went out just flawlessly, so I give a 10+ to the -80 and also to my Panny BD-30 though... Matter of fact, there's a slight time-gap between both players and the Oscar goes to... the Oppo.. for the quick loading time, as follows:

* Oppo BD-80 took just 42 seconds to fire-up and
* Panny BD-30 took 83 seconds to fire-up...

Bottom line: end of the day, no big deal between both players at all!
Tell you what: it doesn't matter much to me about the slower or faster loading times between both; instead the most important thing is the A/V quality you can achieve and in that regard both players just gives me every little bit I want to, so no complaints whatsoever, as I love both

Regards, Chuck

Seems that the issue i had with playback on a samsung 3600 may have been disc related. After reading a number of posts saying that it played fine, i rented it again and this time no issues at all. Played perfectly...

Now i will have to try the new FW for my up5000....

I was trying to upgrade the firmware on a Samsung BD P1600 - just to play Avatar. Each and every way I try - using USB or ISO burnt onto a CD I get the upgrade failure. Has anyone experienced this yet - and fixed the goddamnthing?

Would love some help...

My wifes friend has a Samsung P1600. She played Avatar fine after going to the Samsung website and downloaded the latest firmware. She said she put the .RUF file onto a USB memory storage stick and away it went.

Thought ill share MY experience with the Samsung c5500 player.

Received a red firmware warning screen when i put in avatar.......Followed the instructions on screen, went to Manufacturer website, downloaded patch file & burn iso image.

Five min. later I had avatar playing 'n all its glory on my Panasonic 65" VieRa plasma.

Kudos to Mr. SAMSUNG for all his help .......

Funny--I was going to make a post about the Oppo BDP-83. Mine wouldn't play the disc--so i popped into the PS3 to make sure it wasn't just a faulty disk. THe PS3 played it perfectly, so i figured i needed a firmware update. After updating the firmware via flash drive, Avatar played beautifully.

Anyone having issues playing the new Avatar extended blu-ray on their player? I have a Dell Zino HTPC with blu-ray and the power DVD DX software doesn't seem to play it

edit: I think I found a solution at the cyberlink forums. For anyone having this problem, just delete anything in the "local storage" folder and then disable your internet. The movie then plays fine.
