There is a blu-ray I want on amazon.fr which supposedly is all region but is in PAL format. Do we still have differing standards with bluray and if so will my sammy bdp-1500 play a pal disc?

PAL and NTSC do not apply to high definition formats but other factors in PAL countries such as 50 hz power and 25 frames per second as the standard for video movies may present compatibility problems for your display. I have been told though that the Blu-Ray format is designed to work with regional display device differences. Since I have a TV that can handle multiple formats, I don't have a way of really testing whether this is true for NTSC/ATSC-only displays.

The catalog listings are all screwed up, so you can't rely on what they say about PAL.

A film based Blu-ray should be 23.976 or 24hz, which is neither NTSC nor PAL but a new system. This is world-wide. However, a few are 50hz which some US players do not like.

See the first two postings in the 1080i50 thread: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1117941
