This player should be released soon. While it lacks 3D playback, wireless connectivity, and a number of other streaming features, I am curious as to the origin of the player.

The overly-priced BDS-1065 and BDS-1900 were largely Sharp-derived players (quick-start, video performance, and menu), but these do not appear to be sharp-based. the lack of a rear-mounted fan and location of outputs and zoom button on the remote have me wondering if there is a hing of LG in the player.

Any thoughts?

Hey Winston,

As usual, I see you're up on this new entry from Yamaha. Buy.com has a pretty decent price on this player that I posted in the deals thread a little while ago.

I look forward to your feedback on this player.

A little off topic... I have noticed any Yamaha promotional pics of their equipment do not have place of manufacture. Wonder why?

Did a little Google searching for any reviews on this player and I managed to find one from....who else, Winston. I guess he was saving this for a rainy day.

Nice review. Would be nice to be able to click and enlarge photos though.

I Don't know why either but the manufacturing trend for current players seems to be China, Malaysia and Indonesia. Looks like Japan isn't the "happening" place to manufacture any more.

Nothing wrong with a LG-based player, it is miles better than any Sharp-based players anyway. Now I wonder which DAC does 667 have?

Just updated a s667 from firmware v1.05 to v1.06 via the network.
Anyone have any info on what the update does?
Nothing on Yamaha's site that I see.

This is the owner's thread. seems to be some duplication.

I have owned it for three months and think it's a decent buy at under $200.

The other OP does make a point as to why is this player being treated like the proverbial red headed step child? Seems to have some of the price/performance bang for the buck as the JVC as you pointed out in your review.

I took your suggestion on the JVC and have not looked back. I am considering the Yamaha for my "big screen" and was still wondering if you are still singing the praises for the 667.

Also I have only been able to find this unit for more than the $200 you mention. Where are you finding this unit for around two bills?

Thanks.

I would love to buy one for under 200 bucks too. So I can replace my slow and buggy BDP-51FD and it also suits my all-Yamaha gear.(speakers/receiver/int amp)

When it first came out, Amazon looked very aggressive in selling them and I bought mine for $219 from memory.

They player is competitive, but is lacking the real bang for the buck where it's currently hovering. If it were only to dip a little lower, it would be a nice blend of speed, pretty to very good dvd playback, and limited streaming. At $250, it's still a bit pricey compared to a Panasonic 85 or LG BD590 or even Sony BDP-S770 that theoretically offer a lot more in respects of basic features (wifi, more streaming, 7.1 analog or wifi or 3d).

I bought the Yamaha DVD-S661 a while back, and it was the worst DVD player I've ever owned. That experience put me off Yamaha, which is a bit stupid as the S661 is in fact a rebranded Philips unit... Still, I'm not sure if Yamaha actually write their own firmware, and perhaps had some part in making the S661 so painfully slow and unstable.

So does anyone know exactly which brand/model the S667 BDP is based on? Is it a blatant re-badge like the S661, or are there actually some H/W modifications?

I'd like some more info on the S667s DACs and SD upscaling capabilities. I can't believe how little info there is on this unit.

Can anyone who has this player tell me if it will convert PAL? I don't mean region free just convert region 0 PAL material like the Oppo's do. I know the other Yamaha blu's will do this.

Thanks

I'm looking for a new BD player and this one has me interested. Going thru looking several players from Sony, LG, Pan & Samsung - so many people seem to have one problem or another with so many players out there. I like the fast load up times this player has.

I am pretty sure that a local Best Buy still had one of these in stock about two weeks ago. I never gave it a second thought till I saw Winston's review. I'm pretty sure it was under $200 if I remember correctly as well. I'm going to look again for it at that store. If the price is right .......

This Yamaha BD player and the European Philips BD players use the MediaTek chipset and the firmware files are the same as the respective models. This firmware file naming approach has been used in the past for Yamaha and Marantz SD DVD players designed by Philips. Based on this theory, does anyone think either the BDP7500 or the Yamaha DVD-S663 hack would be successful?

My old CRT died last week. So I checked out some TVs in a local store and picked out a Toshiba 32E200U, as well as a Pioneer Elite VSX-32 A/V receiver. In order to make the lady of the house happy, I decided to try the Samsung BD-C5500 because of its speed and price. While it speed and price may be its strengths, I decided to return it because I don't like its user interface. Best of all, she agrees with me and realizes that this Yamaha will be the best way to go afterall. Particularly, I like the ability to access advanced settings by hitting the button that accesses the setup menu. I have always prefered how forward/reverse scanning behaves on MediaTek players.

Sadly, my 667 just crapped out without much warning.

Watching a dvd this came up:
Attachment 193685
Followed by this frozen menu:
Attachment 193686
then unresponsive and no longer booting with frozen hello.

Tried hard and soft resets. Has eaten the disc and will not even make it to the main menu.

Major bummer
