Is the print version of stereophile out ahead of the digital version on zinio? I just got the April edition. Can't wait to read it.

You need to read more carefully. Via HDMI, yes. Via analog, no, but not too shabby.

Hi guys, and thanks for comments so far on this player.

Down here in NZ though we're still limited to March copies of Stereophile so will be at least 2 more months before the ship berths with the May edition!

I need to make a call on a player in the next few weeks and as I have the A1000 receiver it looks like a sensible pairing (with mirage omnisats for sound and AE4000 pj - still to choose a panel for day to day viewing.)

We still have a fair amount of SD TV content and while BluRay will be main source for movie nights we still need to cater for SD DVDs. So I'm really interested in knowing how the BDA1000 copes with SD sources. Have ruled out the Cambridge Azur 650 on those grounds and looking at either the Oppo or Yammie. Pricing here is quite different to the US - the Yamaha is about $200 less than the Oppo though both are pretty extortionate by your standards.

Any comments on SD capabilities much appreciated.

Thanks
Pete

I have had a BDA-1000 for a few weeks now and think the digital audio output sounds wonderful thru my Peachtree iDecco. I am also streaming audio from an iMac using Asset UPnP running under Crossover--a little too complicated by it does work. Asset is transcoding all my music files to LPCM since the BDA only reads WAV or WMA. Some of my files are high res FLAC and they sound great but I have no way of telling at what bit rate or sample freq. they are reaching the BDA

I wish someone would develop a comprehensive server/player that runs on a Mac and did all the above more elegantly.

I have a BDA 1000 that I bought as a demo from B&H Photo about a month ago. It is a great machine but since I use an external DAC, the audio quality is not that different from my Oppo. I would sell you this unit for the $450 I paid plus shipping from 11937. Let me know if you are interested.

Hey, new firmware is just released! Finally there is YouTube now with auto HQ choice if available (at least I can see good quality picture). Noticed better iPhone app stability. Well... so far no more to say... so far all still run...

I contacted Yamaha recently, and was told that they would have more of the BD-A1000 at the end of July. Today I noticed a page on the Yamaha website for the BD-A1010. No release date, but it's up on a few vendor websites already, including Amazon (not for sale, though). Seems as though it'll be a fair measure cheaper than last year's model, too.

Link to the Yamaha page for the BD-A1010
Link to the Amazon page, which describes it as shipping in "1 to 2 months." Don't know if that's for real, though.

Not to be too crass, but I have a BD-A1000 for sale. It's been sitting in its box for the past few months because I have no opportunity to use it. Anyone interested can see my posting here from June.

According to Yamaha, the BD-A1010 should be released in late July or early August. The rep gave me the usual caveat about the date being subject to change.

Short Version of Question:

Can I pause a movie, go away an hour, a day , or a week later and pick right up where I left off with a BD-A1000?

Long Version

I have a Yamaha RX-A2000 which I use with a 2010 "slim?" PlayStation PS3 to watch 3D Blu-ray content. I also have a Logitech Harmony 1100 which has the PS3 contraption.

When I inevitably hit the wrong black button on the black PS3 remote, or hit pause and come back an hour later, the PS3 exits the movie, then makes me log back into PS3, work my way back to Video->BD-Disc, then.. the previews start (cannot be FF on Warner Bros) ... then the movie title comes up, then I have to figure out where I left off.. Imagine the looks on my kids faces when I blurt out "whoops.. hit stop instead of pause.. take 5 minute break everyone.."

How is "life" in general with a BD-A1000? Does it work like a Blu-ray player first, or do I have to walk through endless Hulu, Netflix, Youtube, or whatever? Looking forward to using my AV Controller iPhone app to control BOTH my RX-A2000 and a BD-A1000, or BD-A1010.

By chance is the remote back lit? Is it black buttons on black background?

BTW.. the Logitech Harmony 1100 is no "harmony" with PS3. Seems like it never works. If I have a half hour I can go through the pairing ceremony for the PS3 dongle.. but the PS3 then forgets about the unit..
Thanks

Music in the Round #48

Yamaha Aventage BD-A1000 universal Blu-ray player
http://www.stereophile.com/content/music-round-50

Answered one of my questions above.. No illuminated remote.
(Well.. the iPhone AV Controller iOS app is illuminated.. and fun..)

The article references an error:
"THE SETTING IS PROHIBITED, PLEASE SETUP AGAIN."
possibly related to having a BD-A1000 which is not connected to the Internet (gasp!).

I assume the BD-A1000 is capable of getting updates as the Blu-ray format evolves (can your player play SALT? - My brother in law's player can't -- he doesn't do updates).

Can't wait to see reviews on the BD-A1010 (and an explanation for a $200 price drop)

It can download updates but I was able to play SALT. Of course, I cannot remember which player I used, sorry.

Thanks!

Thats perfect. Also tells me that the new model should offer color space selection too. You havent seen a PDF like that for the A1010 have you?

I do not know much about the Mitsumi chip, but I know Mediatek does a good job.

I understand that the new BD-A1010 is the exact same thing. Why the price drop? Why a new model? I'm mainly posting here because if the BD-A1010 is the same thing, then BD-A1000 owners and BD-A1010 owners would be able to help one another out. In fact, if they are so similar, maybe the BD-A1000 and BD-A1010 should really be murged into one thread.

Is it really the exact same thing? The manuals are different where the BD-A1000 is sparce while the BD-A1010 is very much more detailed.

AND the BD-A1000 is a 2010 announced & released year so it possibly not involved in the component out "sunset"? The BD-A1010 is a 2011 announced & released model where the studio's sunset requirements apply.

Just found that the "sunset law" was effective as of Dec 31, 2010 instead of Dec 31, 2011 as I had thought on 1st encounter with the "law" a few days back.

Still don't think that the lowered price is all due to the lack of greater than 480i output from the component connections.

It could very well be! Good analog sections, whether for video or audio, would require more guts in the player. The BD-A1000 was probibly manufactured before December 31, 2010, where now that the BD-A1010 definatly wouldn't have that capability, that just might explain the $200 price drop afterall!

Anyone aware of "BD-S1067 Software Update Version 1.7012" ?
Does it bring anything more than "This software includes the following improvements: 1. Playback stability of certain discs."
