Ethernet update went smooth. HDMI1 handshake greatly improved, Avatar loaded fine so this is much better than before although it took a small amount of time to play the disc.

I downloaded the new firmware and think I found a bug. I was on the Home screen, selected Internet, chose Netflix, messed around in there for a few seconds then pressed Exit to back out and got this screen below. Looks like the Internet screen behind the Home screen.

Hello,
That had to be the fastest Firmware Update in history. I think it literally took a minute. Now the Music Files saved on my Windows 7 PC showup under the Music Icon. I like the Turntable Graphics for when you are Playing Media Files. Also, the Font and Information is very well laid out.

I sometimes lose sight that this is a BDP as it has so many Features. All I can say is I cannot imagine being happier and still cannot get over how good the new Industrial Design looks.
Cheers,

Wish I could say the same.

Half way through Upgrading The Main Firmware it froze. Front panel displays FW Fail.

Waiting to hear from Oppo.

Had it completed the download? Had it started the 2nd pass -- the actual install of the update after the download?

Here's a tip for Netflix users. Use the "Return" button to exit Netflix (used to be "Clear" button).

Posted this in the PN63C8000 thread as well... any help would be appreciated...

Ok finally got in town and got my TV very excited. Sitting on floor right now until buddy comes over tomorrow to help me put on wall.

Queation...I see several folks have the Denon 3808 and wondering if anyone also has the Oppo 93 too?

Before I get this all ready to hook up I am laying the wires.

Here is what I plan, please let me know if this sounds ok. Watching general TV and blu ray on weekends say.

3808 DVD> hdmi > Oppo 93 (HDMI 1)
Oppo 93 > hdmi 2 > 8000
Here are options I am not sure with all the reading...
8000 > optical out to 3808 (dvr input) I want 5.1 for regular TV (is this right? or can/should I use hdmi if so..what in/out?)
8000 > hdmi out (3 or 4 on TV) to 3808 TV in
Uverse > hdmi to 3808 > missing something?

Missing anything? No PS3 or any other units.

Thanks for any help. Lots to read and just not seeing things between all the 8000/3808/93 threads.

I moved around more in the menus and it was a mess, screens on top of screens so rebooted the 93 and now cannot duplicate the same issue following the same steps.

Works perfect now.

I see the link is live in the BDP-93 Support page at Oppo for the Manual. If you know anyone who was looking to download a Manual, let them know it is now on-line.

Folks who already have their 93 should definitely download and at least skim the new Manual.

If I understand your question correctly....

With the firmware that came out a few hours ago you should be able to connect HDMI1 to the Tv and HDMI2 to the Denon, set as pass-through, and connect the Denon to the TV on another input.

In the video settings of the Oppo, you can now force audio over HDMI1 which will allow both HDMI1 and 2 to play audio at the same time.

Folks if you have any strangenesses after the update, consider doing an erase Persistent Storage, Reset Factory Defaults (which includes the Easy Setup Wizard), power off, pull the power plug for a few seconds, power up, and then re-enter your personal settings. Note that settings are saved when you power down.

I don't know of any specific bugs that REQUIRE you to do this, but it should be the first thing you try if you find a problem and haven't already done it -- "just in case" the update needs an initialization like this for reasons we haven't found yet.

Note that Reset Factory Defaults will also clear your account associations: I.e., you'll need to re-activate your Netflix account for the player. This is easy and won't screw up your Netflix account.

So this would avoid the need for the optical for 5.1? HDMI will produce that?

Hello,
And the Remote does seem to function better, but my Onkyo Remote Control still works far better in terms of distance. However, before the Update, I could not even make the OPPO RC work unless I was standing up next to the Machine. Now, it does marginally work from the Couch.

Please do not take this as unhappiness as I would never in a Million Years consider Returning it. Rather, I am just surprised the RC is not as effective so far as that of my BDP-83 by a fairly significant margin.
Cheers,

For anyone interested in these features, give them another try with the new firmware:
  • AVCHD on NTFS
  • FLAC over DLNA
  • MKA over DLNA
  • more FLAC files play
  • Monkey Audio APE support

After a bit more time with it, and watching A LOT of different SD content, mostly streamed, also a few sd dvd's, I'm convinced that it wasn't just my eyes playing tricks on me when I made that first post, it really does look A LOT better now. I'm extremely pleased with the quality of it now, this was most certainly the one thing that had me somewhat regretting selling my 83 so quickly. Kudos to oppo!

edit: it's not just in the jaggies/aliasing, it's the entire color reproduction of sd content that looks much more spot on.

After upgrade, did reset, cleared flash, etc.

Reset up like before and I cannot get sound over hdmi 2.

HDMI 1 goes directly to my TV. 2 goes to my Onkyo receiver. It worked before the update. Now I just get the picture but no sound - I get a lock on the receiver with no sound. If I switch the tv to the hdmi that the receiver outputs (hdmi 2 on the 93) sound comes back. If I turn off the tv and just play a cd, no sound. I have to now power the receiver on off a few times to get sound. It was all working before.

Oppo always screws hdmi up. The original 83 use to sync fast at 1080p24 then they updated to accomdate some lame samsung lcd's with flakey hdmi syncing at 1080p24 and my handshakes went to hell. Oppo never fixed.

Read the manual and have a few questions.

1080p/24 should I leave it off on or auto?

Under hdmi 1 should I set the colorspace to 4:2:2 Or 4:4:4?

what are you guys setting the hdmi deep color to? 36 bits?

Nothing is in deep color right now. Funny though, previous fw version 36 bits worked except for dvds and new 36 bit is flakey with jumpy screen even in the menu. 83 had no problem with these settings.

My Apple Airport wifi is set up as a "closed" network with WPA2 (Personal) security.

I use the Manual option to set up the network in the 93. For SSID Name and password, keep in mind that these are upper/lower case sensitive. The Green button on the remote is a shift key shortcut. For Security, WPA2 (AES) is the one that matches.

Alternatively, you can temporarily turn off the "closed" option in the Airport base station's setup (Airport Utilty) and then use the Scan option in the 93 to find the network. After the 93 has connected to the Airport wifi you can change it back to "closed" and the 93 will still find it.

I don't believe the one button setup (3rd option in the 93) will work with Apple Airport wifi.

All of this stuff depends on what works best for the thing at the other end of the cable (AVR or display).

To start, try YCbCr 4:4:4, Deep Color OFF and 1080p/24 OFF. These are the basic, default settings for HDMI to HDMI connections and should produce results that look very good indeed.

Once you are familiar with how that looks, experiment with the other settings to see if you can get things even better. The owner's thread for your AVR or display should offer some advice on source device settings known to work well or settings known to cause problems. There is no pat answer as to which settings will work best across different AVRs or displays.
