  • Additional Disc & Media Formats - Additional disc and file formats, such as DVD, audio CD, HDCD, Kodak Picture CD, AVCHD, MP4, DivX, MKV, FLAC, WAV and other audio/video/picture files on recorded discs, USB or eSATA drives can be played back on the BDP-93.

Unparalleled Video Quality:

  • Qdeo by Marvell - The BDP-93 incorporates Marvell's Kyoto-G2 video processor with the second generation Qdeo™ technology. Qdeo video processing delivers a truly immersive viewing experience by rendering quiet natural video free of noise and artifacts for all types of content. For high-quality Blu-ray content, the BDP-93 faithfully reproduces the program just as the director intended; for DVD, the up-converted picture quality bridges the visual gap from your current DVD library to Blu-ray discs; for network streaming and user-encoded content at a variety of formats and quality, the BDP-93 offers enhancement options including video noise reduction, compression artifact reduction, intelligent color, contrast, detail and edge enhancements.
  • DVD Up-Conversion - Per-pixel motion-adaptive de-interlacing and advanced scaling transform the standard definition image on DVDs to high definition output to your TV. Additional Qdeo video processing options help to deliver a clearer, smoother, and true-to-life picture free of noise and artifacts.
  • Full HD 1080p Output - The BDP-93 features user selectable video output resolutions, including 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, and up to 1080p 50 or 60Hz.
  • True 24p™ Video - Many Blu-ray Discs are recorded at 24 frames per second, the same frame rate as the original movie's theatrical release. The BDP-93 can faithfully redeliver the original frames using 1080p 24Hz output (compatible display required) for smoother motion and a flicker-free, film-like home theater experience.
  • Source Direct Mode - For users who wish to use an external video processor, high-end audio/video receiver or display, the BDP-93 offers a "Source Direct" mode. The original audio/video content on the discs is sent out with no additional processing or alteration.
  • Multiple Zoom Modes - The BDP-93 supports multiple levels of aspect ratio control and image zooming, including a vertical stretch mode for customers with a 2.35:1 CIH (Constant Image Height) display system. A unique subtitle shift feature allows the user to move the subtitle up and down, making it possible to see all subtitle text when using a 2.35:1 CIH display. (Blu-ray discs with BD-Java may prohibit zoom operation.)
  • Dual HDMI v1.4a Outputs - Two assignable HDMI v1.4a outputs are provided to capitalize on the optimum audio and video settings to all old, new, and future HDMI televisions and receivers. With the option of full audio and video output to 2 displays; or dedicate one HDMI for audio, the other for video, it promotes a high quality video and audio for both signal paths. The BDP-93 supports 3D and Deep Color modes on both HDMI output ports.

High Fidelity Audio:

  • Dolby® TrueHD - Dolby TrueHD delivers lossless studio master quality audio designed specifically for high definition entertainment. The BDP-93 supports bit-stream output of Dolby TrueHD via its HDMI 1.4a output. It can also internally decode Dolby TrueHD into LPCM and output via HDMI or the 7.1ch analog audio output terminals. (Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus audio formats are also supported.).
  • DTS-HD Master Audio™ - DTS-HD Master Audio delivers an auditory experience that matches the lifelike images of high-definition video with up to 7.1 channels that are bit-for-bit identical to the studio master. The BDP-93 supports bit-stream output of DTS-HD Master Audio. It can also internally decode DTS-HD Master Audio and output via HDMI or the 7.1ch analog audio output terminals. (DTS-HD High Resolution Audio and DTS Digital Surround are also supported.)
  • 7.1-Channel Analog Output - Individual analog 7.1-channel surround outputs are ideal to connect to a 7.1-channel or 5.1-channel surround sound system. The BDP-93 delivers an incredible sound stage and an immersive surround experience. For users with stereo speakers, the BDP-93 offers a down-mix mode.
  • Digital Optical and Coaxial Outputs - For simple and easy connection to more traditional A/V receivers, the BDP-93 features both optical and coaxial outputs for digital audio.

Ultimate Convenience:

  • Dual HDMI Outputs – The BDP-93 is equipped with two HDMI output ports and offers the most versatile installation options. You do not have to upgrade your A/V receiver to a 3D model in order to enjoy 3D. One HDMI output of the BDP-93 can be connected to a 3D TV and the other can be connected to a pre-3D HDMI v1.1-v1.3 A/V receiver. For projector users, you can connect one output to a projector for home theater use and the other to a TV for casual viewing. Consumers can take advantage of this fast eSATA connection to play contents from their hard disks full of audio, video and photo files. Most commercially available hard disks pre-formatted with NTFS, FAT32 and FAT file systems are supported, and file sizes larger than 4GB can be played back.

FIRMWARE RELEASES
Release date: December 17, 2010
Category: Latest Official Release
Main Version: BDP9x-33-1216
Loader Version: CN0500
Sub Version: MCU93-06-1008

1. HDMI compatibility improvements.
2. Compatibility fix for multi-channel SACD playback over HDMI in DSD mode.
3. General disc compatibility improvement based on recent and upcoming Blu-ray releases as well as user-submitted disc samples.

Note: The player does not support the "Via Network" upgrade method if it uses a wireless Internet connection. Please choose the "Via USB" or "Via Disc" method instead. Once this new firmware version is installed, the player will be able to upgrade via the wireless Internet in the future.

Release date: January 31, 2011
Category: Latest Official Release
Main Version: BDP9x-38-0126
Loader Version: CN0500
Sub Version: MCU93-06-1008

1. HDMI compatibility improvements. This version resolves compatibility issues reported by customers for passing 3D through certain A/V receiver models, and for getting HD audio bitstream on some A/V receiver models.
2. Improvement to audio and video synchronization (lip sync).
3. Picasa Web Album added to the "Internet" section of the Home Menu.
4. General disc compatibility improvement based on recent and upcoming Blu-ray releases as well as user-submitted disc samples.

Release date: March 18, 2011
Category: Public Beta Test Version
Main Version: BDP9x-41-0303B
Loader Version: CN0500
Sub Version: MCU93-09-0218 (BDP-93), MCU95-08-0218 (BDP-95)

1. Improvement to media file compatibility, such as MKV and FLAC.
2. The addition of "Film Fresh" video streaming service. To learn more about this service or sign up, please visit www.filmfresh.com.
3. The addition of a forced 3D output mode. This is useful for certain 3D projectors that do not indicate 3D support via the HDMI handshake procedure. If the "3D Mode" in the "Video Setup" section of the setup menu is set to "Forced", the player will output 3D frame-packed format to a 2D TV or projector when playing 3D Blu-ray. This option is not for 2D to 3D conversion. For most users, please leave the "3D Mode" setting at "Auto".
4. For users who only use the analog audio output, setting "HDMI Audio" to "Off" and "SACD Output" to "DSD" in the "Audio Format Setup" section of the setup menu will now maintain DSD output to the analog audio D/A converters. The previous firmware will force a conversion to PCM if the connected HDMI TV or A/V receiver cannot support DSD.
5. For the BDP-95 model only, the dedicated stereo output ports (XLR and RCA) can now be assigned to use as the Front Left and Front Right output channels.
6. General disc compatibility improvement based on recent and upcoming Blu-ray releases as well as user-submitted disc samples.

Release date: March 29, 2011
Category: Latest Official Release
Main Version: BDP9x-42-0323
Loader Version: CN0500

2. The addition of "Film Fresh" video streaming service. To learn more about this service or sign up, please visit www.filmfresh.com.
3. The addition of a forced 3D output mode. This is useful for certain 3D projectors that do not indicate 3D support via the HDMI handshake procedure.
Fixed an audio channel mapping bug for SACD playback in DSD mode in the public beta test version BDP9x-41-0303B (not affecting the previous official release version).
6. General disc compatibility improvement based on recent and upcoming Blu-ray releases as well as user-submitted disc samples.

NOTE: This is basically the Beta Firmware but now made Official. Only upgrade if you are affected by "5."

Release date: May 2, 2011
Category: Public Beta Release
Main Version: BDP9x-46-0428B
Loader Version: CN0500
Sub Version: MCU93-09-0218 (BDP-93), MCU95-08-0218 (BDP-95)

1. Improved the Speaker Configuration options under Audio Processing. It is now possible to independently set distances for each speaker (previously speaker groups were treated as linked pairs), speaker distances can now be set to the actual spatial distance of the speakers (previously no speaker could be set further from listening position and the Front Left/Right speakers), “Test Tones” can now be used in conjunction with the player’s internal trim controls, speaker distances can now be set in quarter foot increments and speakers no longer require a minimum distance.
2. Added the Zoom and Aspect Ratio (AR) adjustment for BD-Java enabled discs (available on HDMI 1 only). To take advantage of this functionality, set the Primary Output to HDMI 1 (Video Setup), use a resolution other than “Source Direct”, and use the HDMI 1 output on the BDP-93. During the disc playback, press the ZOOM button to change the zoom level and AR on the fly. A momentarily black screen may be observed but this is normal. Please note that 3D BD-Java Blu-rays do not allow for Zoom adjustments.
3. Improved HDMI compatibility with some Audio/Video (AV) receivers. Some customers reported that after updating to the current Official 42-0323 firmware, HDMI handshake problems (such as momentary black screen, audio and/or video dropout, flashing screen, etc.) were observed, and in most cases, it only happened on HDMI 1 not on HDMI 2.
4. Improved access and read speed to external hard drive (HDD) connected with USB or eSATA, especially when two external HDDs are connected in parallel.

Release date: June 10, 2011
Category: Public Beta Release
Main Version: BDP9x-50-0608
Loader Version: CN0900
Sub Version: MCU93-09-0218 (BDP-93), MCU95-08-0218 (BDP-95)

2. The Netflix interface is upgraded to version 2.1. This upgrade allows for Canadian customers to stream Netflix and adds the "Search" function.
3. Upgraded the Blu-ray loader driver (CN0900). This upgrade should result in smoother and quitter disc operation.
4. Added a new option for "Volume Control" under Setup -> Audio Processing. This function allows for enabling or disabling the analog volume controls (also known as Variable Audio). If set to "OFF" then the VOL-/+ keys on the remote will no longer affect the analog audio output.
5. Added "Direct Play" support for DVD-Audio titles. After loading the DVD-Audio title, pressing STOP followed by PLAY on the remote control will directly access the first Group/Title, bypassing any menu.
6. Added ID-Tag support for APE and FLAC files. Now these formats will show Title, Artist, Album and Genre on screen when played back at the Home Menu. Embedded Album Art is also supported for FLAC files.
7. Added OGG and OGM Vorbis media support.
8. Improved BD-Live connectivity. For example, "MovieIQ" will now properly connect and download additional media on select Sony Pictures Blu-rays.
9. Improved DLNA performance, which includes faster indexing and more reliable media playback, and added additional DLNA server support.
10. Improved HDMI compatibility with some Audio/Video (AV) receivers and televisions.
11. Improved general disc compatibility based on recent and upcoming Blu-ray releases as well as user-submitted disc samples.

Release date: July 08, 2011
Category: Public Beta Release
Main Version: BDP9x-52-0707B
Loader Version: CN0900
Sub Version: MCU93-09-0218 (BDP-93), MCU95-08-0218 (BDP-95)

1. Improved FLAC and APE file support. The previous 50-0608B firmware added ID-Tag support and Embedded Album Art display (FLAC only), however, this feature caused some FLAC and APE files to stop working. This issue has been solved.
2. Improved the audio/video synchronization of the analog outputs. The previous 50-0608B firmware added analog audio delays not present in the current Official firmware. The analog audio and the digital video are now properly in sync with each other.
3. Restored "Season Play" function found on several ABC Studio's Blu-ray releases, such as "LOST".
4. Fixed the incorrect vertical stretch on some 4:3 DVD films, such as "TWELVE O'CLOCK HIGH" (FOX 2002). This issue could be observed when TV Aspect Ratio is set to "16:9 Wide/Auto" and no zooming operation is performed.
5. Improved general disc compatibility based on recent and upcoming Blu-ray releases as well as user-submitted disc samples.

Category: Public Beta Release
Main Version: BDP9x-53-0805B
Loader Version: CN0900
Sub Version: MCU93-09-0218 (BDP-93), MCU95-08-0218 (BDP-95)

1. Added YouTube Leanback streaming. YouTube LeanBack is designed to provide an uninterrupted stream of HD videos from YouTube like you were watching a normal television channel. Access YouTube Leanback at the Home Menu -> Internet, or by pressing SOURCE and selecting YouTube.
2. Resolved errors related to the player freezing when loading specific Netflix streams. In the previous firmware, when playing movies with optional language and subtitle selection, the player may freeze at the initial buffering screen. Examples of titles affected include "Shutter Island", "LOST. Season 1. Pilot" and "The One".
3. Improved support for user-created DVD-Audio discs. In the previous firmware, the on-screen display and the front panel timing counters may stop at 00:00:00 when playing continuously from Track 1 to Track 2. This was mostly observed on user-created DVD-Audio discs which were “Audio Only” and contained no menus, backgrounds, or additional features.
4. Added brief chapter information (Current Chapter/Total Chapters) on-screen display when pressing PREV or NEXT button to skip chapters. Currently this feature only applies to commercial discs which include Blu-ray, DVD and DVD-Audio.
5. Improved general disc compatibility based on recent and upcoming Blu-ray releases as well as user-submitted disc samples.

2. Improved the PGS subtitle support in M2TS/TS playback, through USB drive, external hard drive or DLNA streaming. Customers have reported that the movie picture could occasionally freeze up during the playback, while the OSD timing counter was still moving forward. The issue has been solved in this release.
3. Resolved the subtitle flickering or image stuttering issue during some 3D movie playback. This issue has been reported to happen randomly on some 3D movies released in Asia or Europe, sample titles include "Step Up", "SAW" and "Resident Evil: Afterlife".

Customers have reported that when playing these DVD's using HDMI 1 and setting Aspect Ratio to "16:9 Wide/Auto", the pictures were vertically stretched. This issue could happen to DVD's issued before or around 2000, and sample titles include "The Abyss", "Titanic", "TWELVE O'CLOCK HIGH (2002)" and "1941 (1979)".
5. Improved general disc compatibility based on recent and upcoming Blu-ray releases as well as user-submitted disc samples. Sample movies include "Avatar (3D)", "Journey to Mecca" and "Alice (2009 Miniseries)".

4. Improved the subtitle support in M2TS/TS playback through USB drive, external hard drive or DLNA streaming. Customers have reported that the movie picture could occasionally freeze up during the playback, while the time counter was still moving forward. This issue was related to subtitles and has been resolved in this release.
5. Resolved the subtitle flickering or image stuttering issue during some 3D movie playback. This issue has been reported to happen randomly on some 3D movies released in Asia or Europe. Sample titles include "Step Up", "SAW" and "Resident Evil: Afterlife".
6. Resolved the image vertical stretch issue observed on some legacy DVD's. Customers have reported that when playing these DVD's using HDMI 1 and setting Aspect Ratio to "16:9 Wide/Auto", the pictures were vertically stretched. This issue could happen to certain 4:3 DVD's issued before or around 2000, and sample titles include "The Abyss", "Titanic", "TWELVE O'CLOCK HIGH (2002)" and "1941 (1979)".
7. Improved support for user-created DVD-Audio discs. In the previous firmware, the on-screen display and the front panel time counters may stop at 00:00:00 when playback advanced from Track 1 to Track 2. This was mostly observed on user-created DVD-Audio discs which were “Audio Only” and contained no menus, backgrounds, or additional features.
8. Resolved the Test Tone missing or harsh noise issues. Some customers have reported these using some special combinations of downmix mode and speaker setting.
9. Improved the audio information display, e.g., previously "MLP 5.1" was shown as "5.1", "1/2 DTS 6.1" was shown as "1/2 DTS 5.1".
10. Added brief chapter information (Current Chapter/Total Chapters) on-screen display when pressing PREV or NEXT button to skip chapters. This feature only applies to commercial discs which include Blu-ray, DVD and DVD-Audio.
11. Improved general disc compatibility based on recent and upcoming Blu-ray releases as well as user-submitted disc samples. Sample movies include "Avatar(3D)", "Journey to Mecca", "Alice (2009 Miniseries)" and "Pirate of Caribbean 4" (3D version released in Asia and Europe).

Category: Public Beta Test Version
Main Version: BDP9x-60-1125B

1. Added the "Title/Chapter Repeat" capability to some Blu-ray movies authorized with BD-Java technology: during the movie playback, press the REPEAT button on your remote to select the required repeating mode. Remember since BD-Java is still an evolving technology, this function may not apply to all BD-Java based movies.
2. Resolved the loading failure issue observed on several recently-released TV series, sample titles include "Fringe (BD)" (Season 3, 2011), "Chuck (BD)" (Season 4, 2011), "Dexter (BD)" (Season 5, 2011). Normally, these movies can be played with no problem at the first trial, then if you stop the playback or eject the tray, and later try to load the same movie again, the player will freeze with a black screen and the VFD stops at 00:00:00. The reason is that these discs contain a new feature to provide a pop-up menu at re-loading, so the customer can decide to resume or not. This issue has been resolved.
3. Resolved the Fast Forward (FWD) failure during some FLAC music playback. Customers have reported that during some FLAC playback, if you press the FWD button to 2x and up, the music playback could automatically skip to the next track. This issue has been resolved.
4. Resolved the extra BD-Live setting required to load some Blu-ray movies, sample titles include "Warlord (BD)" (2010). To load these titles, you have to set the "BD Live" to be "ON", although no actual internet connection is required. This issue has been resolved.
5. Resolved the channel missing issue at the 7.1 WAV playback. Customers have reported that FL and FR channel contents may be lost during the 7.1 WAV playback. This issue has been resolved.
6. Reset the SPDIF audio format during the VUDU movie playback. According to VUDU certification requirement, we have set the VUDU movie's audio to be DTS 5.1 through SPDIF in Bitstream mode.
7. Added the direct play capability to BDAV folder, which is similar to BDMV folder. BDAV is a container for videos recorded using AVCHD camcorders such as Sony's HDR-SR series.
8. Improved general disc compatibility based on recent and upcoming Blu-ray releases as well as user-submitted disc samples.

Note: This version was previously released as a public beta test version on December 5, 2011. It has been qualified and promoted to an official release version. If you have installed the public beta version during the week of December 5, there is no need to reinstall the firmware.

1. Added "Title/Chapter Repeat" capability to some Blu-ray movies authorized with BD-Java technology. During movie playback, press the REPEAT button on your remote to select the desired repeat mode. As BD-Java is an evolving technology, this function may not apply to all present and future BD-Java based movies.
2. Resolved the loading failure issue observed on several recently-released Blu-ray TV series, including "Fringe" (Season 3, 2011), "Chuck" (Season 4, 2011), "Dexter" (Season 5, 2011). Normally, these movies can be played with no problems when initially loaded. However, if disc playback has been stopped or the disc ejected, the disc would fail to load properly and remain on a black screen with the front VFD displaying 00:00:00. The cause of this error was related to the player failing to load pop-up menu to display disc resume functionality. This firmware properly resolves the pop-up menu.
3. Resolved a Fast Forward (FWD) bug during some FLAC music playback. Customers have reported that during some FLAC playback, if you press the FWD button to 2x and up, the music playback could automatically skip to the next track. This issue has been resolved.
4. Resolved the extra BD-Live setting required to load some Blu-ray movies such as "Warlord" (2010). To load such titles it was necessary to set "BD Live" to be "ON" under Network Setup, even if no internet connection was present. This issue has been resolved and for all "BD-Live" states ("ON", "LIMITED", "OFF").
5. Resolved FL and FR channels missing from user generated 7.1 WAV media. Customers have reported that FL and FR channel contents may be lost during the playback of 7.1 WAV files. This issue has been resolved.
6. Reset the SPDIF audio format from VUDU to DTS 5.1 when Bistream is enabled. In compliance with the VUDU certification requirements, we have set the VUDU’s audio stream to be converted to DTS 5.1 through SPDIF in Bitstream mode. Previous firmware resolved only stereo PCM over SPDIF.
7. Added the direct play capability to BDAV folder. BDAV is a container for videos recorded using AVCHD camcorders such as Sony's HDR-SR series.
8. Improved general disc compatibility based on recent and upcoming Blu-ray releases as well as user-submitted disc samples.

1. Resolved the loading failure issue observed on several recently-released Blu-ray movies, mainly Universal Europe (EU) releases. Their US releases have no known issue. Sample titles include "Jurassic Park Trilogy (BD Box Set, 2011)", "Kong Fu Panda 2 (BD, 2011)", "Fast Five (BD, 2011)", and "National Lampoon's Animal House (BD, 1978 version)" etc. With the previous firmware, disc playback will automatically stop once you go to the Main Menu and select to PLAY. This firmware properly loads and plays all the above Blu-ray titles.
2. Improved general disc compatibility based on recent and upcoming Blu-ray releases as well as user-submitted disc samples including "Mr. Poppers Penguins (BD, 2012)", "Dragons Gift of the Night Fury (BD, 2012)", "Human Planet (BD, BBC Documentary)" and "Nine Inch Nails, Live - Beside You In Time (BD)".
3. Per the request from the studios, the ISO file playback function has been removed in this firmware version. The previous firmware had the ability to play ISO files, but it was an undocumented function and was never officially announced or supported. Future firmware version will no longer support ISO playback.

Neuromancer's Note: Multi-directory AVCHD is still working in this firmware, but that too may be removed in the future. The AVCHD specifications only require root directory support, not multi-directory support.

1. Per the request from the studios, the ISO file playback function has been removed in this firmware version. The previous firmware had the ability to play ISO files, but it was an undocumented function and was never officially announced or supported. Future firmware version will no longer support ISO playback.
2. Resolved the loading failure observed on several recently released titles, samples like "Hugo (BD, 2012)" and "Rio (BD, 2011)". The failure only happens with the 2D version blu-ray disc, where the TV would get a black screen and the player's front panel display would remain at 00:00:00. This firmware can properly load and play these titles.
3. Improved the video up-conversion quality over HDMI 1 output for 720p source material. This improvement provides a better picture quality for Netflix streaming as well as 720p-encoded Blu-ray discs.
5. Resolved the audio channel loss issue where DTS-HD MA 6.1 audio is decoded as 5.1 for both the analog audio outputs and the HDMI LPCM output. Sample titles include "Star Wars: The Complete Saga (BD, 2011)" and "The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy (BD, 2011)". The reason is the Center Surround (CS) channel is folded into Surround channels (SR/SL) instead of Surround Back channels (SBR/SBL). This firmware decodes this 6.1 audio as 7.1 by distributing the CS channel to the SBR/SBL channels, and send out through HDMI and analog audio outputs.
6. Resolved the freezing issue observed when accessing some BD-Live features. Samples include the "Extras" in "Puss in Boots (BD, 2011)", the "Disney Virtual Vault" in "The Lion King (BD, 2011)".
7. Provided smaller volume control adjustment step through the Analog audio outputs. Previously the Volume Control adjusts at 5 per step in the index and 2 dB per step in the level. This firmware allows volume control at 1 per step in the index (100, 99, 98, 97, ...), 0.5 dB per step in the level for BDP-95, 1 dB per two consecutive steps in the level for BDP-93 (e.g.,indexes 100 and 99 share the same volume level).

1. Updated the Youtube Leanback application to the latest revision which allows for users to log into their YouTube account(s) and upgrades the general user interface (UI).
2. Improved the support for "Disc Unbound" feature and other similar features observed on some newly released Blu-ray television and movie series, mainly FOX releases. This feature allows the audience to select the episode located on another disc, and once the correct disc is loaded, the player will directly jump to the pre-selected episode and start to play. Sample titles include "Sons of Anarchy, Season 3 and 4 (BD, 2011)", "The Killing, Season 1 (BD, 2011)", "Chuck, Season 4 (BD, 2011)", "Archer, Season 2 (BD, 2011)" and "Game of Thrones, Season 1 (BD, 2012)".
3. The "Blockbuster on Demand" icon has been removed from the home menu. Blockbuster stopped this service to most consumer electronic devices after March 31, 2012.
4. Improved general disc compatibility based on recent and upcoming Blu-ray releases as well as user-submitted disc samples.

1. Added "DVD 24p Conversion". This feature restores the original 24 film frames from DVD-Video and outputs it as 1080p/24Hz. To enable this feature, enter the Video Setup in the Setup Menu, set the "1080p24 Output" to be "Auto" or "On", and set the "DVD 24p Conversion" to be "On". Note: the actual DVD 24Hz conversion quality can be affected by the display’s processing and video source, especially for a non-3:2 pulldown cadence source.
2. Resolved random freezing issue while streaming from Netflix. Previously, customers reported that after installing the last Official firmware (BDP9x-66-0413), Netflix streaming could be unreliable, and in some cases, even result in the player completely freezing until a power cycle was performed. This firmware has resolved these issues.
3. Resolved the audio decoding failure on the "Volume Sixteen" DTS Blu-ray Demo Disc (released CES 2012). Customers reported clips for "Tron" and "Lion King" were improperly decoded when HDMI was set to LPCM. This firmware upgrades the DTS SDK to correct changes in the encoding standards for these kind of soundtracks.
4. Improved general disc compatibility based on recent and upcoming Blu-ray releases as well as user-submitted disc samples, such as "Dexter (BD, Season 4)".

1. Resolved an issue where subtitles on some Blu-ray discs would fail to display. Customers reported that after loading the disc and selecting a subtitle language in the Top Menu, the subtitle would not show automatically when movie playback started. It was required that the customer toggled the subtitle on/off or switched subtitle languages to enable subtitle output. Sample titles include "Kong Fu Panda 1/2 (BD, 2008/2011)", "A Seperation (BD, 2012)", "Being Flynn (BD, 2012)" and "The World God Only Knows (BD, 2012)". This issue has been resolved.
2. Resolved the occasional analog audio dropout when playing some DTS-HD Master soundtracks which were observed after upgrading the BDP-95 with BDP9x-71-0723 firmware. This issue has been resolved.
3. VEVO content playback is now supported in the Youtube Leanback application.
4. Resolved a loading issue with "American Gangster (BD, 2009)". Customers have reported that the initial menu, which allows you to select Theatrical Version or Extended Version, was no longer displaying after installing the BDP9x-71-0723 firmware. This issue has been resolved.
5. A potential bug: play a Blu-ray movie with Secondary Audio "ON", then select the Youtube Leanback application, the player might freeze itself. We are still working on this issue.

1. Resolved a playback issue with several Blu-ray movies recently released by HBO Studios, known titles include "Parade's End" and "Behind the Candelabra". Customers have reported that once the disc is loaded and the Main Menu shows, either choosing the PLAY or selecting a scene will cause the player to lock up with nothing on the TV screen and all zeroes on the front panel of the player. This issue has been resolved.
2. Resolved a loading issue with several TV episodes in the Film Fresh application. Customers have reported that those episode would fail to load and cause the player to lock-up. Samples included "Super Natural". This issue has been resolved.
3. Improved the support for "Episode Resume" feature observed on "Game of Thrones: Season 1 (BD, 2012)". It is similar to the "Disc Unbound" feature observed on new FOX releases, which allows the audience to select the episode located on another disc, and once the correct disc is loaded, the player will directly jump to the pre-selected episode and start to play.
4. Resolved a playback issue with some MKV files. Customers have reported that if they keep pressing the FWD button to increase the fast forward speed to 3x and beyond, the current playback would automatically stop. This issue has been resolved.
5. Added an "OFF" choice to the OSD Mode, which hides all the on-screen information unless the DISPLAY button is pressed. This can be set in "Setup Menu"->"Video Setup" -> "Display Options" -> "OSD Mode".
6. Expanded the Subtitle Shift option from "-5 ~ +5" to "-10 ~ +10", which allows finer control of the subtitle position on the display screen.
7. General disc compatibility improvement based on recent and upcoming Blu-ray releases as well as user-submitted disc samples.

1. Fixed a bug in calculating acoustic propagation delay from the "Speaker Distance" parameters of the "Speaker Configuration" setting.
2. Resolved an incorrect 4:3 aspect ratio (AR) display with some user-generated MKV and MPEG files. When the customer set the "Primary Output" to HDMI 1 and played video with AR 4:3, double pillar box could be observed on the pictures from HDMI 1 Output. This AR issue has been resolved.
3. Resolved a HDMI handshaking issue introduced by a Sony firmware update to their 4K Ultra HDTV, such as the XBR-55X900A model. The player could be immediately locked up once its HDMI 1 output was connected to the television. This was caused by the new data field related to HDMI 2.0 support in the television's Extended Display Identification Data (EDID) block. We added special handling for these fields and resolved this issue.
4. Resolved a compatibility issue with the SiliconDust HDHomeRun Prime CableCard TV tuner. If both the TV tuner and the BDP-93/95 player were connected to the same home network, the player could slow down and produce interrupted images for disc playback after a few minutes. The problem was related to the redundant query/response between these two devices, and was resolved in this firmware.

1. Resolved a disc loading issue with several Blu-ray movies released by Touchstone Home Entertainment. Customers reported that after loading the disc, the player would stopped even froze at the time point "2:00:00". Sample titles include "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" and "The Tempest".
2. Resolved a subtitle display issue with several Blu-ray movies released by Shout! Factory studio. Customers reported that the subtitle would quickly dissappear, even completely undisplay at multiple time points. Sample titles include "The Extraordinary Adventures of Adele Blanc-Sec Director's Cut" and "Prince of Darkness". Neuromancer's Note: This will not fix all subtitle issues where there are multiple subtitles which will appear in staggered intervals simultaneously. In particular, if you watch anime Blu-rays, you will likely still see errors with the subtitles not being rendered properly. This firmware should fix the majority of these issues appearing, but is not a complete fix yet.
3. Resolved an audio dropout issue with the SACD playback. Customers reported that if an SACD was loaded after the player was turned on, a brief audio dropout could be heard after ~2 seconds into the first track. This only happened on the first track on the first SACD disc.

I found this to be inconsistent in my own testing. Sometimes it would load with BD-LIVE Access set to ON and a physical connection to the Internet (WiFi or Ethernet) while other times it would still hang after the previews when I have pressed TOP-MENU. This is the same with Lady and the Tramp.

Doing the suggested clearing persistent storage and powering off the payer I was able to get it to the main menu screen twice with BD-live turned off, albeit with some timely pushing of the yellow button. I thought I was OK until I tried it a 3rd time and from that point on I got the blank screen of death with each attempt.
I then tried BD live turned on and was able to see the previews but it would again freeze after the last one without ever getting to the main menu screen. Interesting thing is that during the playing of said previews, the display showed ___ ___ ___ ___ (blanks) where the time counter normally displays elapsed time.

I need to get this movie to play as I have about 10 people coming over Saturday night for the specific purpose of watching Hugo. It only figures that the first movie I've had a real problem loading with the 95 happens when we've scheduled a party around that particular movie. Has anyone seen that old Murphy guy lately? UGH!!!

What is even more frustrating is the fact that this movie loads repeatedly without a hitch on my $150.00 panny.

Yes, of course the main movie file will play if it's extracted as a standalone m2ts file, but if you want menus and extras (including picture in picture, etc) you need to rip the whole disc and the problem will remain. That was my point. It was just poorly expressed:)

Can 3D main movie be extracted as standalone m2ts file as well (i.e. no menu, no extra)?

I just finished the movie and it played with out a hitch on my 95 with the last official update, I'm not sure what you guys consider previews here but I only saw the Paramount display a short wait and then straight to the main menu, my copy of Hugo is a Netflix bd rental and not 3d if that may have something to do with it or not I cant say. but here are the steps I did.

1. Before placing the disc in the tray delete the persistent storage and enable bd-live.

2. power down the unit and wait 30 seconds.

3. power the unit back up and hopefully you can now enjoy the movie.

Are you suggesting that the latest Beta FW will fix my Hugo problem?

Someone has already stated that they were able to resolve their errors by enabling BD-LIVE and connecting the player with Ethernet/WiFi to the network. I have confirmed this with the Official Firmware, but I also experienced lockups following this method.

The only guaranteed method seems to be upgrading the firmware.

Hi:

I have a Marantz Video Projector the VP-11S2 and a OPPO BDP-83.

I have the OPPO in video bypass for the Marantz Processor.

I checked it out initially and could not see a difference and Bypassed the OPPO for no other reason then I figured it was one less processing step.

I am now looking at buying the OPPO 93 for the streaming capabilities. (Netflix)

Questions :

Is there anyone that knows if the newer Video chip in the 93 is better then the Marantz ?

(2)

If Not, am I wasting my time in buying the new 93 Blu-Ray player if I am bypassing the Video signal ?

(3)

Am I simply better off finding another way to stream the Netflix ?

(4)

Any suggestions on an alternative way to stream the video ?

I have Directv and I have it hooked up to my computer via Ethernet.

It has a second Ethernet Port.

My HT Processor has an Ethernet Connection.

Thanks,

Yeah, I tried everything last night and could not again replicate whatever I did that got the movie to load twice.

I assume you are referring to the latest Beta FW from January? I have never utilized a Beta launch and am curious to know two things........ does this latest Beta FW truly correct the problem associated with Hugo and when they do finally release the "official" version, is there any problem going from a Beta version to the Official version? Also, have there been any bugs found with this latest Beta launch?

I realize that going with the latest FW will negate any ISO opportunities that I haven't yet persued but since I don't see myself going down that road, it's a non-issue......... I think.

I bought this blu ray because of the amazing 6.1 DTS MASTER track, but I was surprised to see that the Oppo displays it as just 5.1.My UMC 1 failed to report it as 6.1 as well, either as bitstream or LPCM from the Oppo.

Lord of the rings extended edition trilogy has the same 6.1 audio and the Oppo plays them and displays them just fine.

Quick question to anyone who may know. I haven't call Oppo yet. Does the 93/95 play the DualDisc format, the one with a CD layer on one side and DVD layer on the other? Anyone still have one of those discs and have tested it? Thanks.

*Addendum* I do see now in the manual it's sounds like it's hit and miss with DualDiscs regarding the CD side of the disc.

Several years ago I got a DualDisc of Carly Simon for Christmas, but it would not play on any of several CD and DVD players I owned at the time, including my computer drives. After I got my 93 I remembered that I had never been able to play that DualDisc so I thought I would give it a try and it worked great. Kudos to Oppo for truly being a "universal player". I hope it works on your DualDisc as well as it did mine.

Hi guys...while I was reorganizing the folder structure on my USB-attached HDD, I had one crazy idea - to use NTFS hard links - so I can cross-reference the same physical file in multiple folders (for example if I want to have movie files organized in folders per genres or per movie stars). And surprisingly it worked pretty well! Oppo recognized the linked files as regular files and played them with no issues. Just thought that other people may find this interesting too...

Yes, I am talking about the Beta 64-1119 Firmware.

According to my own testing, the most reliable means to playing back Hugo is to upgrade to the Beta firmware. However, if you will just be playing the film once, then enabling BD-LIVE and connecting the player to your active network will likely enable at least one viewing of the film.

There are no problems going from Beta to Official Firmware.

^ Just be aware that if you load Beta firmware (downloading it from Oppo and using the USB or burned-disc method), then when the next Official firmware comes out you will need to use the USB or burned-disc method to install that as well.

Network install will not be available to change between Beta and Official firmware (in either direction). This is to keep people from accidentally moving from one to the other.

This is also a nice way to build persistent Play Lists.

What's shown on the Oppo's on-screen display is the stats of the content being read off the disc -- not what's being sent out on the HDMI cable.

The correct Oppo output settings for you to use are:

Resolution = 1080p (not Auto or Source Direct)

1080p/24 = Auto (not ON)

3D Mode = Auto (not ON)

HDMI Color Space = best to use an explicit choice rather than Auto, you'll need to experiment. Start with YCbCr 4:4:4

HDMI Deep Color = you'll need to experiment. Start with 36 bit

The "ON" settings force /24 or 3D output (when that's what's actually in the content) even if the display says it can't accept that during the HDMI handshake. It's for oddball displays that don't do the handshake correctly. AUTO for those two polls the display and will only send /24 or 3D if that is in the content *AND* the display says it can accept that.

It's also best to make an explicit choice for HDMI Audio (LPCM or Bitstream) rather than using Auto. Start with LPCM. If you use LPCM, then you can also leave Secondary Audio ON. If you use Bitstream, turn Secondary Audio OFF except when you decide you want to play a Blu-ray disc feature (usually a Picture-in-Picture Commentary track) that requires it.

To see what's actually getting to your display you need to look for some sort of Info display on the TV itself.

Note that if your video is going through an AVR on the way to the display, the capabilities and settings of the AVR also play a role in what gets to the TV.

Bob,

If I have display(jvc rs40 projector) that supports 3d and 24 frames, do you still recommend 1080p/24 and 3d to set to auto?

I am thinking by knowing display supports 3d &24 frames, by setting both of them to ON will reduce hand shake or should not behave different from AUTO vs ON if display supports.

I set my Anthem mrx 700 to through all the time.

Thanks for great posts.

Actually, it can, but this requires OPPO upload several revisions of the firmware to their servers which allows the Beta Firmware to migrate to the Official Firmware. OPPO has not been doing this as so far most Official Firmwares have been based on a previous Beta Firmware without any major changes.

Thanks for great posts.

I don't believe use of ON simplifies the handshake for those two. Use Auto for both.
