Any suggestions on an inexpensive receiver that can handle 5.1 plus?

Pretty much any current receiver can decode all of the newer audio codecs, including DD+.

I got a great deal on a Onkyo TX-NR616. You can throw anything at it including DSD on a USB key and it plays.

I updated my S480 to M07R0579 firmware this morning. It still plays SACD-R.

Sony Blu-Ray BDP-S480 - can't get 1080p output - drops to 480i

Just installed a new Yamaha RX-v475 receiver with my sony blueray and my samsung 1080p tv.
All connected via hdmi.
When I turn the blueray player on (hdmi 2) and play the movie (blueray movie) the TV goes intol 480i mode and the blueray player says the output resolution is restricted. View/listen using hdmi-connected device.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

E.D.

Try to update both TV & Bluray's firmware.

Sony BRAVIA KDL-40EX720, Sony BDP-S480, Pioneer VSX-521-K, LaCie mini HD connect.

The movie studios have excessive paranoia about copying our precious blu-rays to some other HD media via analog (why anyone would want to do that is beyond me) and thus forced manufacturers to limit resolution on analog video connections (component). Dropping to hdmi in these newer players sounds like this might be what is happening to you, if the player thinks you are also sending video over component.
I assume you have no component or composite video cables connected in your system anywhere (ONLY hdmi going between your blu-ray player, receiver and TV)..
You might try going into your blu-ray player setup and make sure HDMI is specified as the primary/only output for video.
Double check settings in your receiver also.

A long-time audio/video addict!

This is most likely infamous HDCP handshake issue that was supposed to be all sorted out years ago. This means that your display thinks your input device doesn't provided required copy protection and drops down resolution to 480P.

How was blu-ray player connected before?

If you connect bluray player directly to TV to the same HDMI port - is there still a problem? If there is no problem then it is incompatibility between BDP and Yamaha. Try different HDMI ports on Yamaha and on TV - sometimes this helps. On my TV Roku doesn't work on one of the HDMI ports (other devices work on this port).

Try updating using this firmware http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?upd_id=7206&os_id=99&mdl=BDPS480

This will not screw up cinavia or screw up the ability to play SACR-R.

It gives a firmware update that allows the above before sony closed the door on these functions. They now sell players that have closed he door.

Mark

I've unhooked the BRP from my receiver and plugged directly into the TV, via HDMI.
When the BLP starts up - it looks fine - plays in HD - 1080i. When I play a BR movie, that's when it drops to 480i.
Weird.

I'm going to look at firmware this evening as well as other BRP settings.

The other thing that I am wondering is - before I play a BR movie, why does the screen display at1080i, rather than 1080p?

What a pain in the neck! ;-)

Thanks,

E.D.

Did it ever play BR at 1080i or 1080P on your TV in any setup?

I just wanted to point out that now it is possible to downgrade :). I have some utilities on my website for anyone who's interested: http://malcolmstagg.com/bdp-s390-downgrade.html . Some people have successfully downgraded the s480, among other players.

Hi all,

So I've been having some problems regarding the aspect ratio of .mkv files that are formatted for 720P/1080P. Those files in particular, regardless of the aspect ratio, the picture is stretched to the full size of the screen. Therefore, 2.35:1 is stretching to 1.85:1 (which from a trained eye is completely unwatchable). This only seems to happen with the HD content, as I have tested it with 576P and lower and the black bars show on top/bottom for those aspect ratio. Store bought BD/DVDs display the correct aspect ratio, as does Netflix/Hulu and all that jazz.

Any help?? This is extremely frustrating as I am having to downgrade my files in order to get a watchable file frown.gif
