I think you'll find the sunset goes like this:

2010 and earlier: Component 1080i for BD, 480i for DVD
2011: Component 480i for BD and DVD
2012: No component at all

2011 and earlier still output non-protected content (home movies, etc.) at 1080i over component.

No blu-ray player has ever upscaled DVD to 1080i over component.

What is your setup exactly? Can you not simply run HDMI directly to your display and bypass your legacy video switching device?

Thanks dave...from long long ago.
I guess that answers my questions why my componenent output from a Blu Ray disk is 480i.
(anyone want to buy a black paperweight?)

Or a TV with only one HDMI port?

Now at least I know that for Blu-Ray watching it's THE LIVING ROOM.

Its actually in the fine print in the owners manual that it only outputs 480i over component for blu-ray..I found that out after I traded a brand new sony blu-ray player for this one, in my setup I need 1080i over component. I saw the component outputs thought awesome done deal. so after 2-3 hours of troubleshooting my equipment, finally googled a pdf of the owners manual and realized I'm just SOL.

powered HDMI switch should fix your lack of HDMI ports in the bedroom though.

I can't fast forward my mkv videos. Doing that will bring it back the the file browser menu page. Anyone experienced this?

Got a firmware update today on the 380. The online download notes say it's to update SSL Security.

Thank you, I'll look for it. (Almost never use the bedroom Blu Ray...no closed captions for streaming, no HD through component.)

Better late than never: Thank you very much...I'll look into buying one.

I just picked up a BDP-S380 at a local thrift type store for dirt cheap. It seems to work fine. It is on firmware 0259. It appears that firmware 0579 is the last firmware without cinavia corruption for the S380. Does anyone know where I can get M06.R.0579 for the BDP-S380? Does the S380 use the same firmware as the S580 by any chance? Many thanks!

A long-time audio/video addict!
