If any improvement, I would expect to see it on a 60" screen. I will be hooking it up on Sunday and will be watching LOTR trilogy and HP. I will post thoughts on PQ & AQ then.

Hi folks,

Thinking of picking up this player tomorrow, but have a silly question...

It will bepaired with an Onkyo SR-608, which of course has neither a usb port or internet compatibility. With the new blue ray player will I be able to hook up her Ipad2 through the USB port and stream an exercise program she has to the tv through the reciever?

thanks!

Unfortunately iPhone/iPad is not yet compatible via USB connection with the S780.

Hello. Yes thats right you can play video from the USB or you can DNLA stream from a PC over your home network to the S780 too.

Sony style has a bundle with 2 potters for $249' amazon has it for $215 does not mention discs. Are discs included in the box? Sony style store wanted to sell me box with boxed marina for same price that I refused to get. Pls advise if u have picked up recently.

Would you guys think if I dont game, shall it be good replacement for ps3? in my main pioneer elite denon 3808 receiver?

Hi all. Picked this model up yesterday and have a quick question please...when playing normal DVDs it's really quiet but when playing blurays there is a noticeable increase in the 'whine' noise which increases or decreases depending on what the drive is doing etc.

The noise obviously cannot be heard above normal movie sound but is noticeable during very quiet parts from 8 feet away. Is this normal?

Thanks!

that whine will be the fan working because the player is processing the blue ray disc.

Thanks. The noise starts absolutely immediately the disc starts spinning...I would have thought the fan wouldn't start that quickly...am I wrong? Is yours the same?

Edit: are you really sure? I only question it because the noise varies depending on how fast the disc is spinning.

Edit again: definitely not the fan, just got right up to it. And the further into the disc the quiter the whine.

Thx again!

Absolutely, it's a great value buy. It's one of the fastest loading out there, and it uses super bit-mapping to enhance the picture quality.

I think you're the first to post on this forum that you will be using the S780 with a projector. I am curious if you will be able to discern enhanced PQ on the projector screen via the S780's 16bit video processor ...or does the Runco VX-11D process the video signal?

Hello all and I hope you guys are having a Happy New Year! I'm new to this thread but a long time owner of this BD player. I'm wondering if you guys are willing to share or recommend best settings of your following screen settings, mine is this:

Screen Format: Original
DVD Aspect Ratio: Letterbox
Cinema Conversion Mode: Auto
Output Video Format: HDMI - Auto resolution
YCbCr/RGB (HDMI): Auto
HDMI Deep Color Output: Auto

My BD player is connected via HDMI to my STR-DN1020 AVR and again from AVR to my newly bought TV Sony 55 HX 929 via HDMI. I like to watch mainly BR movies and 3D BR movies. I rarely watch streaming or SD videos. I have most of my settings on auto because to tell you the truth I have no idea what the other settings
mean and so any help or suggestions on the settings to get the best video out of this BR player would be really appreciated. Thank you.

For you VUDU users:

Does VUDU on the S780 offer a Download for Later option like on the PS3? (I suppose a USB storage sticks would have to be plugged in for this to even have a chance.)

One time when I rented a VUDU movie on my PS3, I had the option to stream it immediately or download it for later playback. That seems like a great option when you want to watch a modern blockbuster in its best quality, but have insufficient bandwidth to stream it in HDX.

Hey guys I'm looking for a BD player that has a source direct option. I was looking at the manuals of Sony BD players and on the resolution selection they have original resolution as an option, is this Sony's source direct option?

Hello. I never heard of this option until now--but seems like a great alternative for those that need it. I checked the Vudu app on the S780 and I don't see an option to download instead of stream. I've looked around the menu and don't see it. Please tell me which menu this is listed under and I'll check again.

I've never heard of "source direct option"--have you tried contacting Sony directly? I am sure they would be able to tell you.

No. Current sony's don't have source direct. The option you found was just the aspect ratio. The closest you can get is change the resolution to 480i when you play a DVD. I think Oppo may have source direct, but the only reason to spend big bucks on an Oppo is for their upconversion, hence you'd never use source direct. Really old sony's have source direct if that's really important to you. Why do you want source direct?

I have an Onkyo 3009 AVR, which has both an HQV vida and Qdeo chips. It's ironic that the players that feature source direct are the pricier models which happen feature a top flight VP.

I recently moved up to an S780. It has a ton of video options available while a disc is in and playing but Sony really doesn't provide much, or any guidelines for their settings. I'd be interested to know more about:
Cinema 1 and 2
Super Resolution
Texture Remaster
Clear Black
Clear White
Contrast Remaster
and the indivdual video settings for color, contrast, etc.

Can anyone shed some light on these?
