Does the same thing wired or wireless, amazon plays fine.

I have the same problem on a totally different player (panasonic). So I blame the Hulu+ servers, in which case there is no solution.

That is correct to the 24p question above.

I have the s780. Seems odd that the Hulu servers would cause me to have to boot my player by disconnecting the power...

Hello: Where did you find info that there is a 24P content streaming limitation for the S780?

I ask because Vudu streams HDX movies in 1080p/24p and to me Vudu HDX PQ streamed through my S780 is indeed far superior (on my 1080p/24p capable TV) to all the other streaming content I have seen so far and would be surprised/disappointed to learn that I was not viewing 24P--albeit I haven't figured out a way to confirm 24P while streaming Vudu like I can with a blu-ray disk.

1) The 24p setting is only for Bluray and DVD. This is specified in the owners guide.

2) My receiver can look at the HDMI output signal to determine what type of signal it is ... 1080p/60 ... 1080i/50 .... 1080p/24 ... etc. Never had it indicated a 1080p/24 signal on any VOD content.

3) Most players that are able to send 1080p/24 for other content besides bluray, such as VOD (like the panasonic 220) have the user manually set this setting each time, as there is no "flag" in the VOD content to tell the player to send 24p out automatically.

Same here. My settings both TV and Receiver only show 1080P when streaming Vudu HDX but the HDX content is streaming at some fps and I am not sure why its not being measured/displayed.....according to Vudu its 24p

Also I am not sure the three references to the 24p setting in the S780 guide specifically excludes streaming content as it details specific 24P settings for BD/DVD viewing only, which is why I asked for your point of reference since I haven't been able to find anything definitive with regards to streaming content and 24p myself.

Not sure about that ... from the S780 Specs.

BD:
HD (24Hz) (24p True Cinema): Yes

DVD:
DVD 24p output: Yes

In the setting's menu it clearly states the 24p setting is for BD and DVD content ONLY.

Agreed--but I don't think BD/DVD 24p viewing settings has anything to do with the ability of the player to stream 1080p/24p content.

I called Vudu and of course they told me that they do stream HDX in 1080p/24p with their proprietary encoding called TruFilm. Which I already knew about as I found this on their website.
http://supports.vudu.com/questions/209/What+is+HDX%3F

So for me the question still remains if S780 can process streaming 24fps or not. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find any info yet that specifically addresses this issue.

I also own a Panasonic BDT210 and its displays 1080p/60 when streaming Vudu HDX 1080p/24 content while my S780 just displays 1080P and no fps indicator.

Vudu for me shows 1080p/60 on my s580.

Now that's interesting! How are you seeing this? On your TV with the TV remote display function? or via the S580 remote?

Off topic question, sorry! Just curious about which player you like better and which one you think has better PQ, AQ and which one is faster? I already own the S780 just cuirous how it compares with Panny. I am thinking about picking one up for the bedroom.

Thanks!

I have the S780 for my main entertainment room pared with a Sony XBR 60" TV and the Panny BDT210 ( I got at Costco during the holidays for $120 with a free Avatar 3D BD) for the bedroom pared with a Samsung 46" LED Smart TV.

I have to say that I enjoy both BD players but for my eyes I really don't see any difference in blu-ray PQ--both are excellent. I do prefer the Panny Viera Cast over the Sony streaming video app capabilities because Panny allows me to chose which streaming video apps I want to download whereas the Sony S780 controls all streaming apps and Sony decides which streaming apps are downloaded or not. Likewise the Panny BDT210 Netflix app allows for 5.1 dolby digital whereas the Sony Netflix app does not. Both are equally fast loading BDs etc.--I don't see where one is faster than the other in this regard.

Now you know you can select which apps you want in the favorites list. Highlight a app, select options and then select make favorite.

You can get to the favorites from either a button on the remote (some have this) ... or select options from either the music or video categorites and say display favorites.

Its not ideal ... but it may help.

That maybe the case with the new 2012 players, but at least with the current 2011 players, and the current firmware, its all still Stereo (with traditional dolby surround in most cases).

I've never really used the Favorites feature on the S780 before so will definitely check that out. Thanks for the tip.

Well..I loaded my Favorites today on the S780 as you suggested--nice feature! This is much more convenient then scrolling through all those apps I don't use.

Yea, some of the earlier remotes had a dedicated favorites button on the remote itself. Later Sony changed this, and removed it, and replaced the red Netflix button.

I think they had it right first time around. After all not everyone uses netflix as their main streamer !

I am glad I did sell my new 780, in anticipation of 790( with 4K upscale)

So, only sony product that does it is Ps3 currently? Am I right? how about sony TVs and streamers?

Thats correct. Currently its only the Ps3, and thats not Dolby Digital + either, just DD. Better than regular Stereo with Dolby Surround though.

Yes, even their streamers SMP-N100 and SMP-N200 are Stereo audio with Netflix.

We're all hoping 2012 is going to change this.

I picked up the S780 yesterday from a BB-MagHT location for $130 and can honestly say the S780 does indeed have superior image quality to my S580.

I also own a Sony 1000ES, Samsung C6900, LG 590, Panasonic BD35, PS3 Phat, PS3 Slim (& Blu Ray - HTPC). The S780 rivals the 1000ES for the best image out of all the players I own.

Thats good to know Jason. I'm going to take a look at the new S590 in the new week or so, and if that doesn't improve anything (streaming mainly for me), I may just pick up a S780 for cheap, until the S790 arrives later this year.

I'm a bit concerned that Sony may have dropped VUDU from their supported streaming services. I've seen no information on VUDU support on any of the new 2012 players.

I think I may have to relocate my Sony BDP blu ray player. Can anyone out there confirm that the form factor for the optical audio output is TOSLINK?

Keen to compare it to my S770.

I have both the S770 and S780. While I think the PQ/AQ is very similar between the two, I actually preffer the S770. I just love the S770. Everything about the S770 is just flawless, IMO one of the best all around BD players ever made.

When the S790 comes out, i will give it a try to see how it measure up against the S770.

The 780 has both toslink and coax digital outputs.
