Ok, so last year was a bit of a dud with the Sharp merger and then the rushed-to-market 3D players. So let's see what this year brings.
Bad product shots are all I've seen so far, but the new look is very nice, and consistent across the range. They also match the new VSX and SC receivers.
BDP-140
BDP-440
BDP-LX55
BDP-140:
3D Playback SACD Support
Network Functions (DLNA, YouTube etc...)
PC File Playback (DivX plus HD etc)
iControl AV2 Control App
Quick Response
Wi-Fi Connection (Via Optional Adaptor)
Sound Retriever Link
Stream Smoother Link
BDP-440 adds
PQLS Bitstream Multi-Channel
Aluminium Front Panel
IP Control
BDP-LX55 adds QDEO Video Processor Twin HDMI Outputs
RS232 Connection
High Grade Audio Parts
Armoured Chassis
This is all preliminary information only.
Judging by the specs, I think this year seems a lot more interesting. They tick all the requirement boxes for 3D, DLNA, networking.
SACD support not only in the high-end, but all the way down to the entry level player is a nice touch. That alone goes a fair way in separating the brand from the Panasonic/Samsung/LG brands towards an enthusiast market without alienating the mass market.
The LX / Elite model actually stands out this year. Twin HDMI is a proper high-end feature. Upgraded video processing is a proper high-end feature.
The weak model appears to be the mid-range BDP-440. Not much that distinguishes it from the entry-level BDP-140. If I'd been in charge I would probably have canned the wifi for the 140 just to set it apart. Or included the wifi dongle with the 440.
Estimated recommended retail prices
BDP-140 - $199
BDP-440 - $299
BDP-LX55 - $399-$499 (There's probably two Elite versions but only one LX)

As far as I know that deal never happened. There was supposed to be a joint venture with Sharp to continue to build their Kuro TV's but it was nixed before it even started. They then started a joint venture with Sharp for their DVD players and Blu-ray players.
Since 2010 starting with the BDP-330, Sharp would first come out with a player and then Pioneer would add their signature features such as PQLS to it. Find out what Blu-ray players Sharp is currently making, as well as coming out with and see if they resemble the ones in this thread. If so, check out the manuals. If they are more Pioneer-based, then there is hope. If they are still Sharp style, then you know that they won't be true Pioneers. If the current or upcoming Sharp players do not resemble the ones in this thread, then there is still hope for these new players.
FYI, According to an employee PIONEER Europe : the 2011 blu ray player would be the TRUE PIONEER , he insist that everything was new into the BDP 140 /440 and LX55 blu-ray
It's better wait and see if this news is confirmed

I don't know about you, but I have a good feeling about these new players! Once I read the manual, my faith and doubts will be as confirmed as possible.
It may be a while before we hear about these. Oct. is the relase date. I am very curious about dimensions ans weight. I would also love a dvd audio FW upgrade.

The joint venture that never happened was the Pioneer + Panasonic dealie. Elite-branded Sharp-made TVs are soon to be released this year.
I want the Elite BD players to be a true Pioneer but I honestly doubt it. They already closed their BD player manufacturing plant, fired all the workers. It's very unlikely for them to re-open the manufacturing plant and re-hire workers.
Again... however, I still wish the upcoming Elite BD players to be a true Pioneer player.
The Pioneer/Panasonic deal that never happened was for plasma TVs. Around the same time there was a Pioneer/Sharp deal for LCD TVs that practically never happened. For a short period in limited markets there were Pioneer LCDs available before their TV unit shut down.
Not that it's relevant to Blu-ray players, of course.
Perspective of the 05/51 hinged greatly on the temporal nature of ownership - to many (myself included) it was an incredible bargain. The 320/23 was in a lot of ways the finished version of the 51/05.
In my humble opinion, these stand as some of the best true blu ray players ever made. Full stop.
What Pioneer has quietly slid on to dusty shelves of Best Buy over the past two years is crap not worthy of the two AA batteries in the remote.
Fingers crossed they can breath some life into what used to be sitting at an incredible axis point of performance and value, allbeit slow to load a disc!
I can't imagine you could name a better player in the same pricerange when the 05/51 came out. The Oppo wasn't out, all there was was the panasonics with lfe bug and cruddy upscaling and overpriced denons with same LFE bug and other problems on top of it that required sending the player back to denon for repair.
But, yeah, I could see how the 05/51 could scare a tech newbie...
Does anyone know if these players will have source direct? That's probably the best indication if we're dealing with a Pioneer or Sharp.
