I saw 2 for £139 in the shop in Scotland! Now both have gone... It was so tempting but I have pio bdp-140, Dune Smart H1, PCH A-400 - so could not justify this purchase....

Can a custom FW be applied to the BDP-LX55 if it is supplied with Pioneer firmware version 3.24?

Cheers

Thanks very much but I took the plunge and purchased one, I am currently in Taiwan and thought "why not?". It was easy to get it shipped from mainland China.
I am glad I did, I didn't have to faff about with firmware modifications as it's all been done for me and the unit does exactly as expected.
Well pleased.

Looks like a Linux kernel and the tools required to build it.

It's GPL/LGPL source codes used in Pioneer firmware. BTW this codes was modified by FW developers. For example squashfs 3.4 from this link not compatible with player. Some codes have wrong version. For example BDP-160 FW used squashfs 4 instead of 3.4 from your link.

Thanks very much for this manual.

A bit late to the party but at least now I have a manual for a competent technician to use to maybe sort some of the glitches with this player should I decide to bother having it fixed.

I have it plugged into a power bar to power it on/off as opposed to using the remote/front button as I never know when they'll freeze. I primarily use it with a 2TB HDD of FLAC music files attached and it works great. I was happy to find a way to add folders to the playlist playback function. It's a bit of a glitchy player but as I paid peanuts for it "used like new" I don't mind.

I think some of the problems with these multifunction Blue Ray players is that they're more like computers than disc spinners. My cable box PVR is auto re-booted every night at 2:AM so why not the Pio just so it doesn't get confused rolleyes.gif

Sad to say that after all these years as a Pioneer "loyalist" I've finally had it with their lousy customer service. My next player will be an Oppo and I'll be searching for a different AVR regardless of their ICE and "PQLouSy" technology tongue.gif

@ Ace of Snakes

Thanks for your work with SACD-r playback firmware on some other machines. Though I used HKAN's FAQ site firmware, I believe he incorporated your SACD-r code in his for some of the DVD players' custom firmware.

I haven't read through this entire thread so don't know if there is a reliable custom firmware for the 53fd that's easily installed via CD or USB flash to make it region free (and maybe a bit more glitch free). I'm on firmware 3.24. It would sure be worth at least a beer or a coffee (unless there is a specific cost for it).

Hoping you can let me know smile.gif

You can use LX-55 firmware for 53FD
this is North America analog for BDP LX55
SM for both models http://yadi.sk/d/yb4fx3794UXtq

Thanks again in advance for any replies.

Sorry...feel like a dolt redface.gif

I thought you sent the firmware update then realized it was the service manual (SM) which I already have. I'd never used the deja-vu reader before so at least now I know what the extension means!

As the update just covers DVDs I might implement but would need to buy a universal remote first and am not sure I run into enough DVDs from other regions to warrant the cost. We'll see....would be nice if the BD region was more easily hackable (ie: software).

I am not sure what CFW you have, mate. can you clearly state it? is it 4.0X family or 5.0X? in any case you can change BD zone by accessing special hidden menu. However for different CFW the combination of the buttons on the RC is a bit different. you may try different combos (menu-settings-3344 or 5566 or 9999 (this code can also change HDMI resolution). good luck. then set for DVD 0, 1-6. 0 - multiregion, for BD 1,2,4. 1=A, 2= B, 4=C . You need B in Germany

But now I doubt that the way Pioneer implement the DAC not use the AK4480's DSD capability. I use two RCA cables to connect my BDP and my AVR (Onkyo NR818) through analog connectors. But when I am playing a stereo SACD, I set the "HDMI Audio Output" to "Bitstream", then there is no sound coming out through analog output. The analog output is active only when I set the "HDMI Audio Output" to "PCM" or "Off". So I suspect that there is no DSD signal directly feeding the DAC. Although AK4480 can take DSD bitstream, Pioneer maybe simply converts all DSD to PCM before it going to DAC.

Any idea? Thank you.

I can't be certain about native DSD (ie not packed in SACD) as I don't have a DSD DAC so I just get a hiss sound, indicating the signal is there but not decoded.

With SACD-r discs, which this player handles very well, my Elite receiver displays the DSD->PCM conversion indicator which would suggest the 53fd passes DSD just fine. Not sure if you mean DSD over optical or direct to analog outs but even then the player passes 88.2 (I assume PCM) no problem and the AKM DAC sounds great to me. I think this player gets too bad a rap due to it's kind of staggering out of the gate. With the firmware updates and at the price it can usually be had for, there isn't much competition. I'm certainly happy with my player.

You had some misconceptions here. When you transport digital signal from your Blu-ray player to your receiver, no matter it is DSD or PCM, the AKM DAC in the Blu-ray player is not engaged, instead, what you were listening to is the DAC in your receiver. You need to keep in mind that DSD->PCM is a decoding process which is entirely in digital domain.

As for the question of native DSD support, my own finding is positive. LX55/53FD does support direct DSD->Analog conversion without any PCM stage. I found the LX55 service manual. As shown below, LX55 does feed the AK4480 with DSD signal. To listen to the native DSD, you can connect your 53FD to your receiver/amplifier with a pair of analog RCA cable.

Hope this will help.

Can anybody tell me how to downgrade BDP-LX55 from official firmware version 3.00 so that I can install CFW?

I'm was/am aware of the fact that when the DSD->PCM light is on the receiver is decoding the DSD signal (over HDMI). I wasn't sure if the player passed the DSD signal untouched -> analog or converted it to PCM first. That part of your info is good to know so thanks, but as I can't read a circuit diagram I'll have to take your word for it.

Don't forget to set HDMI audio and Digital Out to Off to insure no DSD-to-PCM takes place before it reaches the analog out.

@ Big C

Thanks for the tip. Can you tell me if the 58AV also does DSD direct to analog outs (stereo & surround) or if it first converts to PCM? I've always wondered about this and if it is the default setting or adjustments need to be made for it (and if so what are they). I thought I read somewhere that it converted to PCM first but could easily be mistaken.

Regardless of how things are implemented it is still a great (my favorite?) sounding player.

I need to compare the 53fd with the DSD -> analog set properly to compare DAC chips/implementation (in stereo only of course ;(
