Which Toshiba player plays BDs, DVD-Videos, DVD-Audios, CDs and SACDs?

It's just a matter of firmware and licences. That doesn't justify these prices in comparison what you get for it. Sony sells their SACD kompatible players below 100$.

How quiet are the drives when spinning BDs on the BDP53/LX55?

My current Yamaha BD667 is quite noisy and annoys me.

Update on my continued testing. Early on in this thread there was a mention of issues with MoFi SACDs. Today I ran 2 through the BDP-53FD, BS&T - BS&T UDSACD 2009 and The Dobbie Brothers - Captain and Me UDSACD 2042. Both discs loaded quickly, and played fine. PQLS was solid (DSOTM Capitol still the only disc with an issue in this area). Also, I called in to Pioneer and spoke with a tech. It appears someone from Pioneer is monitoring this thread as he was given 2 discs to test that I referenced in an earlier post. He indicated no one had called in the issue with WHS, so now it is known. I did receive my copy of WHS 2011 and will get the up hopefully this weekend and test. Will post an update once completed. Have a great week!

This player has been maligned of late pretty heavily and feel obligated to defend it a bit. I have used the pioneer bdp-52 as the primary spinner in a room that gets heavy use for kids movies with my daughter (still rely on my oppo 93 as my reference player). Without fail, the pioneer has been reliable despite have being fed a number of scratched discs and started and stopped frequently to keep up with toddler's requests.

The image quality is very good - not quite as good as the Oppo, but solid. I have had no bugs reported at all. I will say the open button on the front fascia is not always responsive immediately after powering up. I believe this to be a booting issue that delays its response once the pioneer logo splashes. It is not problematic if you press open immediately.

My only other complaint is the lack of the rear IR input. Any player over $200 in this marketplace should have one full stop. Although i hve had limited luck with ir inputs, most people looking to pay the premium for a non-mass market players from Sony or Panasonic expect the ability to discreetly control the device absent a sticky eye.

Overall, i'd recommend this player for folks looking to match their pioneer gear or a less expensive alternative to the oppo, especially if the prices dip as they usually do with pioneer products.

Apples and oranges.

So you're saying, a DVD-Audio license is several hundred dollars? Are you serious?

Licensing fees for a DVD player are below 15$ in total (including fees for Dolby, DTS, CSS, video decoder etc).

Licensing fee for SACD is:
SACD-player producer: 1 time entrance fee @ US$ 25K (reduced to $5K if the producer has a CD license) + 2% of product cost, min $1.5 & max $40.

You have conveniently chosen to ignore other things like the video chip, audio DAC, PQLS, 50Hz support (even for US models), two year warranty, etc. And importantly the defective HDMI video output on the Sony.

You have also deliberately picked the entry-level Sony to compare price with the top-end Pioneer. If you pick the entry-level Pioneer at USD199 instead, or compare the top-end Sony (S780?) with the Pioneer Elites the price differences become much smaller to almost insignificant. In any case since when in AV is the price strictly proportional to features and quality?

If you don't think the price is worth it, then move on. Buy the Sony or Toshiba then. It's only a piece of electronics, or an electronics company, why so much emotional hatred? Are you going to say the same about Denon, Marantz and other more expensive brands? This is getting really tiresome, pointless and non-constructive. Why don't you two go to pm or get on the phone in Germany?

This thread has been contaminated with such non-technical irrelevancies to the extent that it's hard for bona fida users and potential buyers to share and obtain useful technical information and feedback.

Audiosceptics accept audio trials using 25 people. A recent Oxford study with over 353,000 patient records from 639 separate clinical trials shows for every 1,000 people taking diclofenac or ibuprofen there would be 3 additional heart attacks, 4 more cases of heart failure and 1 death every year.

There is no hatred, just disappointment. I wanted the LX55 so badly so I am quite devastated when I see for what Pioneer wants me to pay 500 Euro. I always want the most performance and quality out of my hard earned money but this player lacks both. Let me stress that I do absolutely not prefer a certain brand, my home cinema is mixed with Toshiba (TV), Oppo (BDP), Panasonic (BDP), Yamaha (AVR). And I am fully aware that posting in threads like this will always cause arguments with the brand's fan base.

I have owned a Pioneer LX52 player for a long time. This player was for years perfect in case of build quality, picture and sound performance in relation to the price I paid. I was expecting the new players to be worthy successors after the big announcments made by Mr. Walker (who is not showing up here anymore since the player has been released) and Pioneer, but the result is just disappointing. I would still buy the player when it breaks the 300 Euro barrier but I really think it's not worth more than that.

I have yet some new findings. BTW I have spoke to Pioneer now 3 times to also provide them info and have opened a case. The new issues to report, over the last 3 days, after being off throught the night, the next day, the unit will not power up until I unplug it and then plug it it back in. Today, after watching a Blu Ray, I followed with an SACD Mult Ch disc. It loaded, and started playing, but no audio. After powering down, then powering back up, audio was restored. The next interesting thing, when listening to Dire Straits BIA 5.1 the lead vocals were coming out my left surround speaker. I thought this was odd, and threw the disc in my other SACD component. Channel distribution was correct on this device, with the lead coming out of the center channel as expected. Also, in my earlier posts I indicates PQLS was not stable with certain discs, I am now somewhat convinced this is not a disc issue, as discs that locked with PQLS the past few days, were now having issues today. So, I continue to test, and will update my case with Pioneer as my research continues. I will be doing the WHS 2011 as mentioned yesterday this weekend and will post my findings when completed. Thank you

FYI, I did swap out HDMI high speed cables and did try diff HDMI ports on the SC37 just eliminate those two sources. Results as defined above were the same. sigh of relief

I just wanted to add my comment. This was exactly the same thing I observed. I had no audio from the SURROUND RIGHT channel, and some of the front soundstage audio was coming from the SURROUND LEFT. I would immediately test the same disc on the Oppo, and the channel distribution was correct.

That was the final straw for me, and I got an RMA and sent the player back.

I now have the Yamaha BD-A1010 and couldn't be happier. It is solidly built, loads and starts very fast, and plays all discs well. Video quality is close to that of my Oppo.

As promised, I am providing an update on the WHS issues I noted in previous posts. I finished setting up a WHS 2011 server and copied over my music library, all 1.5 GB. Turned off my original WHS, and happy to announce that the two played together nicely. No lock ups on the 53FD, and Internet access worked as well as all available online services. So, the decision now is, wait to see if Pioneer addresses this with a Firmware update, or, for those that use MS, updating their Home Servers to WHS 2011. More info to come as testing continues. Have a great day!

If you are referring to "pulling the plug", how long are you waiting between pull and connect? I have been using the 10 second rule and my settings have been maintained. I will do this again and see what my results are just to confirm

I am still yet waiting until the holiday time to upgrade the WHS. I have a music library close to 100GB. All lossless encode.

A new finding today. After powering down the unit, the Pionner logo was still seen on the screen, for over 2 hours. Apparently, it did not shut down 100%. Very interesting.
