You need to go in to the settings and change the output from PCM to Bitstream. Since I do not know how you are connected for audio it will either be digital out or HDMI

Ok I did what you said but now, the movie is playing in a small square in the center of the screen and, I can see the loading logo sticking out from behind the square thats playing the movie. Isn't that weird ? Now how would I get that to go back to normal picture?

OK. Why do you think DTS is supposed to show up on your receiver?

If you get PCM on your receiver, DTS decoding has already worked in the player.

That does seem very odd. Did you try and power cycle the unit by unplugging it? Changing audio to bitstream should have no bearing on the video

According to people on Amazon, this is a problem with Crank 2, some had the same square you got.

Blu-ray play back has been very good on my 53fd until tonight. O Brother Where Art Thou exhibited a weird issue with bringing up the chapter scene selection while the movie was playing with no buttons on the remote being pushed. I then could not get it to go away. Seems to be triggered by a chapter change..so basically I had a static square in the bottom left corner of the screen that I couldn't get to go away. Also once the square appeared, could not eject the disc with out unplugging the unit and rebooting. This is the only blu ray movie I have had issues with so far and I don't know if it is the disc or the player.

Damn, I just won one a 53FD on ebay for $360 and starting to regret my purchase after reading this thread. I currently have a PS3, but I don't want to kill the laser watching so many movies.

Does it stream Netflix files in 1080p, with 5.1?

I bought it mainly for PQLS for my SACD/DVD-A collection...and because I'm hoping it has better video quality (and no fan noise) than my PS3. Hope you guys are just exaggerating these problems.

All the issues I have noted are fact. Not all SACDs I have played have had issues, however; some have. Regarding Netflix, I do not have a Netflix account and therefore cannot respond to that question. I am sure Pioneer will be coming out with a firmware update to address some of these issues. So far no issues with DVDA. Happy holidays

Okay, not a show stopper, but, the icontrol app for iPhone that controls the sc37 is not compatible with the 53fd. You need to download icontrol ver 2 for the 53fd which is not compatible with the sc37 I am sensing some developer challenges here

I've been reading this thread and I would just like some input before I buy this unit.

I currently have the 23fd, and I'm sick of the load times and the constant read problems with Netflix discs. A minor scratch causes it to be unreadable and I must finish the movie on my panny bdp.

It will be hooked to an sc-27 with pqls activated. I just want to know, for watching blurays only, how is the 53fd?

All I use my bdp's for is watching blurays, and I just need to know how the 53fd does in this respect?

Thanks.

From a BD point of view I have not seen or experienced any issues. 3D is also very good. Load times have been decent as well. The one time I disabled auto disc start I had to scratch my head because it did not tell me the disc was loaded. I did this initially when testing multi layer SACDs.

Is that something that must be enabled out of the box or is it enabled from the factory?

Put in at least an 1 GB SD card. Very common to see this with Lionsgate titles.

I believe 0-255 is RGB and is typical to computer monitors where as 16-235 is tied to the YCbCr

No!
RGB is 16 - 235.
0 - 255 is Full RGB.

Can you bypass all video and audio processing on the 53?

This is an important feature to "future proof" the player.

Thanks

I received the 53fd and hooked it up today. It is replacing my 23fd and I can tell you that this unit is WAY FASTER than the 23fd is at loading blu rays!! That's a huge plus and one of the reasons I bought this unit.

I've had zero issues with the disc tray or with the unit freezing. With that said, i did a lot of swapping out of movies and a lot of stopping and playing and adjusting settings in the movie (about 2 hours worth of fiddling around). So as far as reliability and speed I'm very pleased.

The only issue I've had so far, and it may not end up being an issue, is that it doesn't seem that the Full RGB setting is the same as the 0-255 RGB setting of the 23fd unit. I found this by using the spears and munsil calibration disc. On my 23fd, in order to see the contrast correctly and not have clipping, I had to use 0-255 RGB setting. However, with Full RGB selected on this unit, it clips the contrast almost entirely. It's very frustrating. It may be a simple setting that I'm missing. I've managed to get it to where I'm ok with it, and the picture quality is great. (please note that this issue may be a compatibility issue with my projector, so others may not have this issue)

I'm very happy with the unit so far and I hope to find the correct setting to get the contrast in check with the calibration disc.

Which color space is set in your projector?
May I ask you, why do you use "RGB" at all and not the default "YCbCr 422"?

The color space on the projector is set to auto and the blu ray player is also set to the default YCbCr422.

With the old 23fd, color space on the projector was set to RGB video and on the 23fd it was set to RGB 0-255. The reason for this was based on my findings while using the spears and munsil calibration disc. I'm not sure if anyone is familiar with this or not but while using it and having the projector and player set to auto (color space) the contrast and red, blue and greens were all clipping. On the contrast test image there are bars ranging from 234-255 and they are on a 254 background. The goal is to see all bars except 254. Well, without mine set to RGB settings, I could only see bars 234,235,236 and it would clip after that.

http://www.spearsandmunsil.com/artic...stcontrol.html

Take a look at that and you may understand it better. Also at the bottom of that page, look at the color clipping patterns and notice the correct way, and incorrect way for the player to show colors. Before using RGB mine would all clip. With the RGB settings used everything would be correct.

With the new 53fd, I cannot find any settings to use that allow it to be calibrated properly and view the contrast and clipping properly. I've found a 'good enough' setting for contrast and as far as color clipping, well, turning chroma down on the player helped to view them properly on the cal disc.

I also found this issue, and traced it to the HDMI Control setting. If you do not want to see it after the unit is powered down, you need to turn HDMI Control to off. It is set to ON by default.

I also realised that the unit would be warm even on standby, should you enable "quick start" for the player.

Hope the above information would be useful to those who have the LX55/53FD player.

Cheers.

In no way am I intending to thread jack or be negative but after reading most of what is posted in this thread, I'm wondering why anyone would buy this player over the Oppo BDP-93

I have an Elite receiver and an Elite 58AV so would really rather have an Elite BluRay player. The thing is from what I can garner from reviews, the Oppo just seems to be a better, more reliable glitch free player. Can anyone here please talk me out of jumping ship?

I haven't owned a player, including an Oppo, without bugs since my first DVD player. Even a couple of my laserdisc players had glitches. As these machines become more pc than player...more bugs. I'm not happy but which brand is less glitch free seems to be futile at this point to me. Go with your gut and the features you want. I think all the bugs I have encountered so far can be fixed via firmware. How long that will take? No idea. But I have had flawless blu-ray playback except one disc. Cds are divine in my opinion. While I can't get pqls on dvd audio and sacd (which seems to be my SC-07s fault) they still sound very good. Issues I have are generally minor. One blu-ray glitch, and several unknown discs in my sacd collection....fast loading time and almost instant response for disc tray opening make up for that. Oppo is a great company too, no doubt, but I don't think any company out there is making a frustration free blu-ray product yet, the technology is still evolving. My two cents.
