I've tried an SACD disc, didn't have the problem. All audio is being sent over HDMI, no analog out. I have also successfully moved from blu-ray to audio cd with no problems once. So a 66% fail rate at this point.

Any ideas what's causing this?
Thanks

I have the same issues, but not at that rate. Sometimes it won't even recognize a Blu-ray until I eject it and put it back in. This player was promising, with plenty of features, but has turned out to be quite a disappointment, I only use the 790 for 3D content at this point. My 4 year old Denon is back in service for everything else and always works flawlessly. No more Sony players for me. This is my third and final one. they are just too glitchy.

Have only had one bad Sony Blu-ray Player in all the years I've been buying them. Given the older models away, and they're still working. (The one bad one, US Purchased 790. Now have a made for Canada one, and it's running fine.)

^^ try turning gracenote disk lookup to manual. Sometimes that service goes down and can cause issues with the player.

Or just turn gracenote off because it is crap. Seriously, in my experience about 25% of the time the cover art is wrong.

It really does need some sort of thumbs up/down system to flag bad cover art.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have Gracenote set to Manual (from memory, the only options were "auto' and 'manual').

I had another play around with this player last night (bought new and boxed), and try as I might, I could not reproduce the issue. This is great, but it irritates me because I know the bug is still there. It's not a big deal, this will not be my primary CD transport but I was doing some side by side testing. Even though both players (CD and BluRay) are outputting digital and being decoded by the receiver, I feel the S790 sounds better, but then new hardware always sounds better. wink.gif

Need some help from experts on Sony BDP-S790. I bought this player yesterday and hooked up to my TV and AVR. Used Hard wire to connect to internet. Blu ray movies play well but having issues with Netflix, Amazon and You tube streaming. When playing Netflix, I am only getting the low resolution video(340 SD or the best is 480 SD) though I have 20MBps internet speed. When I play the same Netflix movie through PS3 it plays in Super HD. Has anyone seen this issue on S790? Appreciate any help.

Thanks.

It depends on the NF traffic. Sometimes (depending on the time of say also) it can take 10 - 15 mins to ramp up to 1080. Other times it's a matter of seconds.

Thanks for quick response. I played the full movie at 7:00 AM in the morning which guess off peak time. The full movie was streaming between 240 SD and 480 SD. So 480 is the maximum resolution I was getting entirely. But as said earlier when I played it on PS3 it was playing in Super HD quality all time. So I guess either I have a defect piece or something wrong with the player.

Do bluray disks play at 1080p? If not I suspect you've not set up the player to accommodate 1080p playback. I'm not sure if this effects NF, but take a look at your manual starting on page 32 for the screen settings.

Also, how are you cabled from the player to the screen? I'm assuming HDMI but wanted to check.

Yes, blu ray discs play perfectly fine. My screen settings for video is set to "Auto". I have also tried changing it to 1080P but no difference.

There is a small difference when you first turn on the player. The initial logo will be in 1080p when you force the output to 1080p. In auto the logo is in SD.

Find a contact and start the petition. I'm on board.
The newer units also support mpeg2 in MKV containers. They need to give us a firmware update for media.

Anybody else having trouble streaming Foobar 2000 through DLNA on the S790?

Windows Media Player will stream without a hitch on the same computer (WAV files)
These WAV files were saved to Foobar as well.

Rather strange but none the less, I would rather use Foobar as my primary.

In the past several days I've had at least 3 DVDs all of a sudden start stuttering like internet traffic making a stream stutter.
At least 2 of the discs were brand new.

Once the stuttering starts, it happens constantly (it isn't just a specific part of the movie).
Stopping the disc, powering down the player and powering it up again fixes the problem.

Has anyone else seen this? Did Sony screw things up with a firmware update?
I mean DVD tech is pretty basic, you wouldn't think it was something they'd get wrong.

Just after a year was up on my 790, it started getting noisy, freezing, etc - Junked it and bought a new one - so far the new one is doing a lot better. First Unit was a US Unit, second Unit was a Canadian Unit.

Fortunately still completely quiet. Definitely not a year old. You guys think I should be looking to do some warranty thing on this?

Was it trying to access gracenote? the last firmware update seems buggier than normal and alot of times playing an older dvd or bluray grace ntoes just pops up in the middle of it for me for no good reason.

I don't think so. I've got it disabled (or manual or whatever the equivalent is).
It might be trying to access the internet anyway, but who knows. I'd think more people would notice this problem though.

I had this happen about a month ago playing a DVD. It happened even after I shut the unit down and turned it back on, but eventially the DVD played. In addition, my unit is a bit noisy and has been this way for awhile now. I don't think the issue is firmware related since I haven't update the firmware in my unit since I purchased it almost 2 years ago.
