@beyzade - Hmm. It does for me. Are you using Serviio with the subtitles enabled and the profile set to "Sony BDP-Sx90 (2012)"?

Also, interesting discovery. Playing around with converting BD-SUP to IDX/SUB in a remux the last couple days.
Apparently any resolution works up to 1440x1080, but 1920x1080 will NOT work. What a crappy limitation.
If you use a smaller resolution they'll appear higher on the screen and to the left (of course). The sub resolution must match the video resolution.

Ugh.

Ah, you aren't using DLNA... not that that is the problem.
I was thinking after responding that something DID sound wrong, and checked my settings.

While I was playing around with testing the last few days I accidentally enabled burning in of subtitles.
You are correct, the S790 does NOT support external subtitles.
MKV is the best format. If your video is mpeg2, then you are indeed out of luck with subtitles (unless you author it to DVD).

hi, i have never done this before ,but ,just cannot get an answer from "the pros"!!! maybe ,someone in cyberworld will read this an d have a solution .I have a sony bdp-s790 blue ray 3-d player connected to a pioneer elite vsx74txvi receiver and a sony bravia xbr65hx950 tv .from the back of the blu -ray i have a hdmi connected to hdmi in the tv and one hdmi to the hdmi receiver .when i place in a blu ray or regular dvd ,the sound comes through the receiver and the picture is outstanding through the tv ....but ,i finally played my first 3-d bluray ..here is the fun part .there was no audio through the receiver ,the 3-d started then the tv went into standby with no picture and the red light blinking ..unplugged and turned back on tv ,put in another non 3-d bluray and it worked, went back to 3-d and same thing happened .checked my hdmi cables and they are "3-d"ready ,checked software update on tv and bdp ,all up to date ..did not try an optical cable to receiver yet ...more concerned with no video and tv powering down .....it was "the life of pi "dvd and the "ice age "3-d ....any solutions will be appreciated ...thank you

Hi, just picked up an S790 and tested it out last night. I updated the firmware and played a few disks, but twice when I played blu-ray then changed to a CD the player hung. All lights on the player flashed and the only way to recover was to unplug the player.

I've tried an SACD disc, didn't have the problem. All audio is being sent over HDMI, no analog out. I have also successfully moved from blu-ray to audio cd with no problems once. So a 66% fail rate at this point.

Any ideas what's causing this?
Thanks

You both should inspect the problematic discs for physical damage.

For best playback of 3D, though, make sure you're using certified High Speed HDMI cables. Standard Speed cables that are relatively short (6' or less) sometimes will work for 1080p, but 3D requires a significantly higher bitrate.

I have the same issues, but not at that rate. Sometimes it won't even recognize a Blu-ray until I eject it and put it back in. This player was promising, with plenty of features, but has turned out to be quite a disappointment, I only use the 790 for 3D content at this point. My 4 year old Denon is back in service for everything else and always works flawlessly. No more Sony players for me. This is my third and final one. they are just too glitchy.

Have only had one bad Sony Blu-ray Player in all the years I've been buying them. Given the older models away, and they're still working. (The one bad one, US Purchased 790. Now have a made for Canada one, and it's running fine.)

^^ try turning gracenote disk lookup to manual. Sometimes that service goes down and can cause issues with the player.

Or just turn gracenote off because it is crap. Seriously, in my experience about 25% of the time the cover art is wrong.

It really does need some sort of thumbs up/down system to flag bad cover art.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have Gracenote set to Manual (from memory, the only options were "auto' and 'manual').

I had another play around with this player last night (bought new and boxed), and try as I might, I could not reproduce the issue. This is great, but it irritates me because I know the bug is still there. It's not a big deal, this will not be my primary CD transport but I was doing some side by side testing. Even though both players (CD and BluRay) are outputting digital and being decoded by the receiver, I feel the S790 sounds better, but then new hardware always sounds better. wink.gif

Need some help from experts on Sony BDP-S790. I bought this player yesterday and hooked up to my TV and AVR. Used Hard wire to connect to internet. Blu ray movies play well but having issues with Netflix, Amazon and You tube streaming. When playing Netflix, I am only getting the low resolution video(340 SD or the best is 480 SD) though I have 20MBps internet speed. When I play the same Netflix movie through PS3 it plays in Super HD. Has anyone seen this issue on S790? Appreciate any help.

Thanks.

It depends on the NF traffic. Sometimes (depending on the time of say also) it can take 10 - 15 mins to ramp up to 1080. Other times it's a matter of seconds.

Thanks for quick response. I played the full movie at 7:00 AM in the morning which guess off peak time. The full movie was streaming between 240 SD and 480 SD. So 480 is the maximum resolution I was getting entirely. But as said earlier when I played it on PS3 it was playing in Super HD quality all time. So I guess either I have a defect piece or something wrong with the player.

Do bluray disks play at 1080p? If not I suspect you've not set up the player to accommodate 1080p playback. I'm not sure if this effects NF, but take a look at your manual starting on page 32 for the screen settings.

Also, how are you cabled from the player to the screen? I'm assuming HDMI but wanted to check.

Yes, blu ray discs play perfectly fine. My screen settings for video is set to "Auto". I have also tried changing it to 1080P but no difference.

There is a small difference when you first turn on the player. The initial logo will be in 1080p when you force the output to 1080p. In auto the logo is in SD.

Find a contact and start the petition. I'm on board.
The newer units also support mpeg2 in MKV containers. They need to give us a firmware update for media.

Anybody else having trouble streaming Foobar 2000 through DLNA on the S790?

Windows Media Player will stream without a hitch on the same computer (WAV files)
These WAV files were saved to Foobar as well.

Rather strange but none the less, I would rather use Foobar as my primary.
